Netflix This Movie! Vol. 163

We're short on picks this week, but high on quality B-movies.

Adam Thas: Aeon Flux (2005, dir. Karyn Kusama) I once hated this movie. That was before I decided to revisit it this week for “Staying Positive.” I go into why I changed my mind more in the column, so if you would like to read more, check it out. I have to admit I’ve turned a corner with Aeon Flux upon a second viewing and 10 years since I last saw it. There are some things to like in this one, with some good action scenes and absolutely killer visuals, making Aeon Flux a movie that I watched this second time and can say I actually enjoyed more than I hated. There are still some problems with the movie but if you can separate yourself from the cartoon, Aeon Flux is a lot more enjoyable. It’s very short, coming in at just a tad over 90 minutes, and paces out the action sequences so it never gets dull. The plot moves quickly and asks a lot of Karyn Kusama in terms of how we understand the plot points, and for the most part she gets it right. Even though the movie is now 10 years old, there are definitely some shots and moments in the movie that I’ve never seen before or since. Check this one out, or give it a second look. I know I’m glad I did.
Heath Holland: Over the Top (1987, dir. Menahem Golan) I originally wanted to recommend a James Cagney movie this week, but Netflix had other plans. Out of the 69 movies Cagney appeared in, guess how many are on Netflix? If you guessed zero, then you're a winner! Then again, with zero Cagney movies on Netflix, we all lose. So in light of this disappointment, I'm switching gears and suggesting you make some time for Cannon's Over the Top, starring Sylvester Stallone. Cannon! Sly! Armwrestling! Big trucks! '80s rock! The sweet song stylings of Frank Stallone! Backwards trucker caps! Suspenders! Questionable parenting decisions! Wow, this movie is completely OVER THE TOP!
Patrick: Turbo Kid (2015, dir. François Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell) I mean, c'mon.

    1. That happenes to me all the time with VOD. I just rented Mojaove with Oscar Isaac of Amazon so expect it to be on Netflix in a week or so.

    2. The other one that always get's me is the 1 month early release on digital platforms. Know I should wait and just buy the Blu in a month but I've cracked so many times and end up buying the thing twice (digital and Blu). The Martian was the last culprit! Further, to rub my nose in it I usually end up getting ANOTHER digital copy with the Blu. I know I should be ok with just a digital copy but I have a physical media addiction. First world problems.

  4. Been waiting for this Turbo Kid opportunity. Hopefully my heightened expectations don't skew the 1st viewing. FThisMovie steered me right with Bone (see above) so I'm pretty excited :). Bring it TURBO!

  5. Finally saw Turbo Kid I must say it was pretty good. I definitely didn't like it as much as Patrick but with that said kinda knowing Patricks taste from listing to the show I must say Turbo Kid is a Patrick movie all day. Retro Vibe somewhat old school cheesy effects, squirting blood, simple story that knows what it is, and Michael Ironside
