  1. I'm trying not to scream " Bridge On The River Kwai!!" during your favorite war films conversation. It's too early in the morning to yell at my phone.
Very enjoyable podcast but I'm not sure if it's gonna give me the push to finally watch this movie. I've fallen completely in love with '70's cinema in the past, but I seem to be in a different spot these days.

  2. Isn't "You're just too good to be true" the song Heath Ledger sings on the bleachers in 10 Things I Hate About You? Maybe it's Monster's Ball. I think that's what JB is thinking of.

  3. I've never seen this. I had to buy it for $10. Can I email the receipt or do you need a physical copy?

  4. I laughed really hard at work when I heard the picture of DeNiro's beard story. In 2015, I tried to get the DeNiro from Jackie Brown body type and came pretty close.

  5. The movie that came to mind for me when JB asked about the cast singing a song was "Sweet Caroline" in Beautiful Girls, a scene the late director Ted Demme had said was a straight homage to Deer Hunter. I don't hear many people comparing the two these days, though, even if I don't find BG horrible.

  6. Its been a while since I've seen Deer Hunter and I think I fall somewhere in between JB and Patrick's opinions, I think it's really good but that first act I feel is just a tad too long (a problem I have had in some recent movies like the Revenant, still you should totally see The Revenant.) Like many older movies I've watched this one came to me as I was trying to figure out a Simpsons reference where Krusty the Klown and Principal Skinner were playing Russian Roulette in the back of Moe's bar. After seeing the scenes in Deer Hunter the Simpsons parody comes off as a bit too dark even for the cartoon. My wife would say of Deer Hunter "its good but I need a break in the middle, its sooo long" (My wife's favorite movie is The Notebook)
On a side note, are there any other movies that have come even a little close to having a Russian Roulette scene as intense as Deer Hunter. The only one I got that gets even a smidge of that is Samuel L Jackson in 187.

  7. Funnily enough, a director's essential was made for Michael Cimino a couple of years ago and The Deer Hunter was his only film on the list that is worth seeing, but everything else is not.

  8. Great podcast and only a third of the length of Deer Hunter! I felt like JB really managed to swing Patrick's opinion on a few things...particularly his singing at the end. I know I was singing and I'm Australian.

  9. I've seen the movie more than five times. Each time I discovered something new but I'm afraid I have never fully grasped the bigger picture. I guess that certain 'Nam movies are not made for audience living in countries other than America.

  10. I totally agree with JB regarding both, Deer Hunter and the long version of Heaven`s Gate as masterpieces.
I also liked his Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and Year of the dragon very much. Desperate Hours and Sunchaser are ok but stay away from The Sicilian. That one is a total disaster with a severly miscast lead and boring as hell.
One of the movies where you feel every minute of it´s 146 minute running time while your ass cheeks beg for mercy.

  11. I don't know if I have a favorite war movie, but one of the more effective one's along with Deer Hunter is a movie starring Michael J. Fox called " Casualties of War." Sean Penn gives a chilling, even terrifying performance in that one.

  12. The classical guitar solo Cavatina was composed by Stanley Myers and became the musical theme in the 1978 movie The Deer Hunter played by the famous guitarist John Williams. The solo version has became a goal for many guitarists to learn but the composition is quite difficult to play and even more difficult to play well.

  13. About this music "the classic music" i love it so much specially the old one which present in the 80s . but the current music for now are so bad , so i think i love the history .

  14. It's outstandingly eager films of this time. Regardless of the way that the film was greatly faulty one and chance to the get-togethers of individuals for the issues of its odd structure and length, and the chronicled accuracy of its Russian roulette progressions. The structure of the film may be anomalous for an American; however it's normal for a story. A debt of gratitude is in order for giving us the pleasant blessing.

  15. Oh man, the ending of this one killed me. Thanks guys, that was a great hour to listen to!

Btw. your comment about the three guys being sort of like three aspects of one person - Dostoevsky kind of did that in Brothers Karamazov. I never thought of Deer Hunter having that same type of characterization, but I definitely see it now. Really cool observation.
