Weekend Open Thread

He who breaks the law goes back to the House of Pain.

We're just a few days away from the Dawn of Justice. So...you know...put the bread in the oven and let's have dinner.

In other news: anyone watching S2 of Daredevil? Anyone excited for a fifth Indiana Jones movie? See anything good lately? Are you going to eat that?

  1. Wasn't interested in any of the new releases this week. We did get the re-release of Anomalisa so I watched that, but it didn't really do much for me. It's wasn't bad, but maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it.

Also watched The End of The Tour since that was added to Prime this month. Never got around to seeing it when it was out last year for various reasons but if I had it probably would have been in my top 3 for last year.

I'm going to watch the new Pee Wee movie in a bit, and I'll watch some Daredevil at some point as well.

  2. I've seen the first two episodes of Daredevil so far, they are moving insanely fast (which surely can't last for two much longer). Be interested to hear what you all think. I want more ninjas. Not enough ninjas so far. Anyway, I am liking it and Punisher is going to be so interesting.

Also, I watched "The Warriors" on Friday night! I loveddddd it. Crazy, and just visually exciting all the way through and honestly a pretty good movie about masculinity, filtered through this crazy Walter Hill world. Made me super excited to check out Streets of Fire. And then I remembered the podcast had come out a couple of weeks back on here so that was nice :) just watched Commando too. Brilliant Schwarzenegger, fun, lean, tough and ridiculous. The two movies are kind of similar just in plot and a little bit aesthetic, both being these long extended point a to point b movies. Anyway, I really liked it. Hoping to get to a lot of Schwarzeneggers less obvious stuff now!

  3. Nope, DD S2 has to wait until I´m finished with the remaining six seasons of Mad Men...that will take a while. ;-)

Just finished HBO´s Show me a hero, which was good but not as good as I thought it would be. But Oscar Isaac was great and it was nice to see Winona Ryder in some good stuff.
Also Alfred Molina was just hilarous.

Am I excited about Indiana Jones 5? I don´t know yet. How do they want to do that with a then 76 years old Harrison Ford without the movie becoming ridiculous? But at least George Lucas will have nothing to do with that, so that`s encouriging, although I would prefer Spielberg going back to do the aborted Robopocalypse, which was a very entertaining book.

    1. Mad Men took the better part of last year to finish but I think the show as a whole is really satisfying.

I was glad that Lucas will be leaving Indy 5 alone, but I hope Harrison Ford doesn't use this as a vehicle to write himself out of every franchise.

    2. I'm a massive Indiana Jones fan (I need to lose weight), but I'm a little dubious about a fifth Indy flick. I like Crystal Skull way more than most people, but even I have to admit that the franchise perhaps belongs in the 1980s when we were all a little more willing to suspend disbelief. What I'd rather Disney do is create a new adventure series in the spirit of Indiana Jones. Do something new and original and give us a NEW pulp hero to root for.

Having said that, I'll be there day one, wearing a fedora and my adventuring khakis. Indiana Jones helped raise me, so the least I can do is be there to support him in his elder years.

      So National Treasure 3 then?

There's actually a National Treasure 3 currently in development.

    6. Kinda like what Heath said, but I'd really love to see something Indy-esque with a totally new star, new characters, etc. that just has that old school feel of big adventure. Sometimes you can still get this in a kids' animated movie, but there's just not much live action fun out there anymore. Give them a big budget, use as many practical effects as possible so the suspense and action are palpable (like a less gritty PG-13 kinda Fury Road vibe maybe?) and put a big bombastic Williams style score on it. I can't speak for all audiences, but that's what I'm aching for right now.

  4. I just watched the Elektra episode of Daredevil season 2 and it was pretty good. Loving the Punisher, Jon Bernthal is amazing and the fights with him and Daredevil are awesome. He gives a monologue about his daughter that is so sad and well acted that i even got a little emotional. There's a pretty epic fight at the end of episode 3 that will blow your mind. I was kinda worried because I had heard some mixed reviews on it but I'm quite enjoying it so far. Hopefully I'll be done by the end of the weekend.

  5. Watched 1974s Black Christmas for the first time and holy fucking shit! It makes me angry that I hadn't seen it before. Just awesome.

    1. Damn its so great, I watched it a couple of years back because AJ Bowen was talking about this being his favourite Christmas horror film! He was right

      Delete
    2. I think he said it was favorite MOVIE ever. I can see it becoming one of my favorites. IT'S THAT GOOD.

      Delete
    3. I can only think of two or three others that I think is debatable as the best Christmas horror film but this is the one you'd have to debate me against.

    4. Dennis, Chaybee. Watching movies from 1974. Any suggestions?

    5. Shit yes - Beyond the Door!

    6. Just went on Amazon and bought the DVD. It looks bonkers...I'm excited.

    7. That's awesome you bought it blind! I love doing that. Hope you like it. You'll also have to check the sequels which are only sequels by title - Bava's Schock 1977 and Amok Train 1989 which is BAT SHIT crazy. Possessed train movie!

    8. What can I say...the trailer is magnificent. I will definitely check them out. Did you see Devil Times Five?

      Delete
    9. I haven't. Been on my list but low priority cause I've heard it's overrated compared to the new found hype.

      Delete
    10. Oh, and it's one of the best trailers ever so keep that in mind and keep 90 minutes tempered when you watch the film.

      Delete
    11. Devil Times Five is super low budget but I found it very entertaining. It's weird and doesn't make a whole lotta sense. I think you'll like it.

    12. 1974, good choice,

Texas chainsaw and Silent night Deadly night are probably already on your list, so to go more for 3 more obsqure

Frightmare as it is most likely Pete Walkers best film and British too :)
Also Let sleeping Corses lie was Aka The living dead at Manchester Morgue, this was filmed in my City so this makes the list

and finally Abby, Its basically a blacksplotation version of The Exorcist, im not saying its great but it is a must see 74 movie, you could do a thesis on whats going on in this film

      Delete
    13. We are on the same wavelength. I just bought Let Sleeping Corpses Lie and Abby(which is on a double DVD with Magdalena, Possessed by the Devil that is also from '74). Frightmare is on Shudder so I'll check that one out, as well. Also, Young Frankenstein has become my favorite Mel Brooks film. I will report back. Thanks, guys!

    14. Yo Dennis, Silent Night Deadly night is from 1984. Silent Night Bloody Night is from 1972 and mistakenly listed on Google as 1974.

      Delete
    15. I think he meant Bloody Night and yes, it is '72. I'm watching The Towering Inferno(always love seeing Steve McQueen), today. I have Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. I can't tell if it's '74 or '79. Have you guys seen it?

      Delete
    16. I haven't. I'm embarrassingly lacking in my Shaw Brothers watching.

      Delete
    17. Yeah. I got mixed up with the date there. Google tricked me, I have not seen 7 Golden Vampires either, let us know how it goes

      Delete
    18. Alright, The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. The first 20 minutes are fantastic. I was on board right away. It slows down a little but gets better at the end. A very weird mix of vampires and samurai...I guess. But you do have Peter Cushing and he makes everything better. Dracula is one of the worst I've ever seen which makes it even more hilarious. I really enjoyed myself but I could see other people really not liking this movie. I'd definitely give it a watch. I got it in a 3 DVD set with Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966) and Frankenstein Created Woman (1967). I haven't seen them yet but I can't watch them until their year comes because I'm a crazy person. 74 does it, again.

    19. Cheers Brent for update
      Ps why 74?
Any reason for this mission you are on?

    20. I've decided that I am no longer capable of picking one movie out of the infinite possibilities at my disposal. Therefor, I pick a year semi at random and my brother and I watch as many as we can from that year. After that, we have our own "Oscars" because the real ones are a crime against integrity. I'm watching Sweet Movie from 74 at the moment. It's bananas.

  6. Super light on new Horror releases this weekend (watched "The Hours Till Daylight" - it's dull, unfortunately) so watched Pee-Wee's Big Holiday. Ummmm...odd I guess was my reaction? His voice wasn't there anymore but man was he committed. The Balloon gag had me in tears! Overall I thought it was uneven to major degrees. I liked some of it but really didn't like other stuff. Either way, it's great that it exists. I have no clue who the movie is for. How would kids react to this with no knowledge of who Pee Wee is? No idea.

  7. Higher Learning 1995
Damn I just rewatched John Singleton's Joint and I forgot how much I love this movie, I really like Lawrence Fishburns slightly over caricatured but great performane as a Professor and he actually says "Welcome to the real world" in this film, was Matrix doing a Higher learning callback? Good stuff

  9. Can I pull out my soapbox for a second? I can? Thanks.
    Ahem.
On the Cloverfield podcast, Patrick and JB discussed the pronunciation of Tenebrae, which Patrick pronounces correctly. This made me think of another word that is almost universally mispronounced in the horror community: giallo.
Now, I'm not pointing fingers. It's an Italian word, and if you hear someone else say it, it is likely that you take for granted that they are saying it correctly.
    They're not.
How do I know? I took Italian all throughout high school and a little in college. I've been to Italy several times. I have Italian family. Now again, I'm not trying to be inflammatory, I just always hear it said wrong and it's like nails on a chalkboard (I'm looking at you, Killer POV...).
I always hear people say "jee-al-oh". However, "ia" in Italian makes a "yah" sound, like in "ciao". Giallo is only two syllables, and phonetically looks like "jyal-low", which makes sense, since it means "yellow". It's true! Youtube says so! https://youtu.be/8HZbIpj6LPQ
Now I'm gonna get off this thing before I fall and seriously hurt myself.

  10. I watched Figures in a Landscape (1970) and was absolutely blown away. There are some helicopter stunts that were truly unbelievable, and Robert Shaw delivers a monologue that rivals the USS Indianapolis monologue in Jaws.

  11. I'm five episodes into Daredevil season 2 and loving it. I also saw 10 Cloverfield Lane, with zero expectations, and was kind of blown away. One of the most impressive thrillers I've seen in awhile.

  12. Hateful Eight Roadshow Edition finally came to my town via digital projection. (Can't win em all). I'd seen the Theatrical release twice and was blown away by how much the pacing of the longer cut improved it for me. I think the paranoia elements work so much better with a few more lines of dialogue and suspicious glances. Love love this movie.

    Gonna watch Pee Wee tonight.

  13. I finally rewatched Boyhood yesterday. Disclaimer: I loved it the first time I saw it. If you didnt, though, I really recommend a second viewing. Like alot of great movies, it might be more effective when your expectations are gone and you can just take it in. It's amazing how, even though I don't have that much in common with the character, I found so much of this movie relatable. If I haven't been through it, I've known someone who has. It also has some really terrific takes on judging people, seeing things from different points of view, and realizing what truly matters over time.

  14. Point Break remake has Teresa Palmer in a bikini. Other than that, it might be the dumbest movie I've ever seen. I'm talking epic, insane stupidity fueled with testosterone "XTREME-ness".

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yesterday, I watch The Towering Inferno (1974). I already think it has to be one of my favorite disaster movies. Steve McQueen and Paul Newman are almost too manly to be on the screen together. Richard Chamberlain is pretty slimy and terrifically unlikeable. Fred Astaire as some sort of con artist that has nothing to do with the plot is weird. OJ Simpson does not fall down some stairs in a wheelchair but no movie is perfect. Another thumbs up for '74.
