Weekend Open Thread

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate this thing called life.

It's been another rough week. Let's talk about movies and try to feel better.

  1. Since this week was for some really tough to handle, I'm glad I saw something interesting, fresh and old at the same time - the Teaser for Ickerman. I've never heard of it before and it's creating a small buzz right now. At least I've to say I'm interested.

  2. Has anybody seen Barbershop: The Next Cur yet? I'm trying to decide if it's worth going out to see. It seems to be good based on reviews, and I generally like Ice Cube, but I also didn't see the original Barbershop, so I don't really know what to expect.

    1. I was wondering about this one, I liked the Fridays and I loved Higher Learning, but never really watched Ice Cube for long while now

    2. I'd watch the original Barbershop. I saw a bit of part 3 before another movie and it was good. Will probably go back and see it soon.

    3. Don't do it, Riske. Think of the children...

    4. Awesome! I'll at least seek out the original movie sometime soon and see if it's up my alley.

  3. Great news and BIG thanks too Chaybee, you Rock sir, your suggestion of Iremberthismovie worked, this was the answer I got that cracked the code

My best guess…. “Chico the Rainmaker”(1974) aka “The Boy With Two Heads”

    From Wikipedia:
‘Chico the Rainmaker was a British film serial made by Eyeline Films and the Children’s Film Foundation. It was shown in 1974 on PBS in the USA, and shown in British cinemas in the 1970s and 1980s as part of their “Saturday Matinees”. The series featured a talking shrunken head.’
Someone on IMDB also said this about it: ‘In the show, a couple of kids had befriended a talking head that they kept in a shoebox. The head looked like the decapitation of “El Jefe” from The Three Amigos.’
You can watch a bit here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og2ovKBAX_8
This was it, super stoaked to finally get to the bottom of this, it freaked me out years ago and I can see why, its still freaky now,

  4. I was just listening to the old Tommy Boy podcast and I heard something disturbing. "PCU is a garbage movie." You take that back, sir. You can blow me where the pampers is. Full disclosure...I wear Huggies.

  5. Woeful double feature last night. "Classroom 6" - my lord. Do not ever watch this movie. It's the longest Hour fifteen minutes I've ever seen. "The Sound and the Shadow" - this director obviously has a type of girl he wants and has the poor actress play her to the fullest in utterly annoying fashion. She's even more annoying than Apple from Turbo Kid. I'll see myself out cause everyone here is throwing up middle fingers at me right now :)

    1. Haha, I know, I'm certainly in the minority. I really liked the film I just did not find Apple appealing as others have. Too quirky, cutesy for my taste.

  6. "Midnight Special" is pretty great.

  7. I watched Tomorrowland and Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise today. One was an uninteresting, humorless, never-ending slog with unlikeable and annoying characters. The other was Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise.

  8. I did the obvious thing and re-watched Purple Rain. As expected, the concert sequences are fantastic, nearly everything in between less so. I still love the byplay between Morris Day and Jerome Benton, and Wendy Melvoin is terrific as the one band member who won't put up with any of Prince's crap. Prince never set the screen on fire as an actor, but there's one moment in the film - where he comes onstage just before singing the title song. It's dead quiet as The Kid slowly looks around the room, and what's clear is that he is terrified. I'm not sure Prince himself ever really felt this way (he always seemed so assured on the stage right from the beginning), but anyone facing a public reckoning can identify with that horrendous moment just before you have to open your mouth and lay it all on the line. Prince may have been a control freak, but I have to respect anyone so willing to show themselves in such a vulnerable state. I'm going to miss that crazy purple genius. RIP, Your Royal Badness.

    1. I had just watched Purple Rain a week ago on my birthday (second time I'd seen it this year with the first being during the 1984 week leading up to fthismoviefest here). So it was that I found myself watching Graffiti Bridge yesterday instead. Even though I know it's a bad movie, under the circumstances I couldn't hate it and just kind of smiled through most of it.

  9. Good night sweet Prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

  10. Just watched video of Bruce Springsteen covering "Purple Rain" in Brooklyn. My heart is exploding.

  11. Watched Everybody Wants Some a few days ago and found it to be good fun with more depth than one might initially think while watching it.

Also watched Elvis & Nixon, and Miles Ahead. Both are almost entirely fictionalized and get by largely on the performances of the leads. I do feel like there's something to Miles Ahead though that maybe some critics didn't get (I do feel like a douche saying that though). It's not a biopic, and there are segments at the beginning and the end that seem to acknowledge that most of what you see in the rest of the movie is fiction. While I'm still not entirely sure to what end a lot of it is ultimately for I do think if you want to make a movie about Miles Davis, it's a good idea to eschew a more typical biopic format and do something a little more risky. It doesn't quite nail it, but I appreciate what I think it's going for.

  12. Watched inherent vice. Like the master it was a lot to think over and not as instantly gratifying as his other stuff but, having let it set for a bit, I really liked it. I think with Joaquin Phoenix we are in a time where someone is just on another plain of acting. Another performance that puts all memories of gladiator and ladder (can't recall the number) to bed. I can't think of a bad performance from him since before walk the line and two lovers just came to mind as another great one (his last pre shite documentary - maybe that was a bad performance).
Josh Brolin as well. Hollow man was his turning point. Nowadays Elizabeth Shue would be shunning Bacon for this side of beef. Pissed myself laughing at scenes I had previously viewed on trailer where he demands more pancakes. Also enjoyed where he ate the plate of weed. Praise be that he didn't go into day trading full time and stuck with the acting. Money never sleeps, but it would consider a bit of forty winks it if josh was lying in bed beside it.

  13. So I saw Blood and Black Lace on 35mm at a festival yesterday. Except I didn't really.

Everyone was sitting comfortably and waiting for the movie to start, when there was an announcement: "Unfortunately the copy we have is missing the first 16 minutes of the movie". So most of the running time we did get to see was spent trying to figure out what was going on. Not a good way to see a movie.

It looked incredibly pretty though (not the print, that was awful, but the direction, lighting and photography).

  14. Viceland currently has my number with their constant Gleaming The Cube/The Warriors double feature. The Warriors edited for television is the definitive version. ;-)

  15. Well, I caught up on some indie horror this week.
SOME KIND OF HATE - The slasher killer doesn't really work and fails to be scary. That being said, I really enjoyed the movie. I liked the characters, and the movie is very well made. Impressive work from the director. Honestly, the movie is at its best before the killer shows up. Also, Grace Phipps is unbelievably attractive.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY - I'm with Patrick. I failed to connect with this in anyway. It's just so... meh. The trailer was better.

LAST SHIFT - A movie that exists purely to show scary images. Some of them work. The movie is never that scary or interesting. Oh well.

GET SHORTY - Not indie. Not horror. But a family member recommended it to me and I decided to check it out. I can't believe how much fun this movie is. How has no one on the podcast ever talked about this movie? Awesome film! John Travolta is so good in it it's crazy.

    1. Some kind of hate is not good. Goodnight Mommy is minus the dream sequence. Last Shift is much smarter and better than just existing for scary images, it's a well done indie with great atmosphere. Not without flaws, but well done within the genre. Get Shorty is one of my top ten favorite comedies of all time.

    2. Didn't I just bring up Get Shorty on the podcast literally last week? Maybe I dreamt it.

    6. I'm pretty sure Get Shorty is mentioned on the podcast just about any time Travolta's career is discussed.

  16. Did anyone check out "God's Pocket?" I checked it out on Netflix a couple weeks ago. I thought it was really good and rather interesting as Hoffman's last film.

  17. This weekend I finished season 4 of "Homeland". Still interesting despite Claire Danes often annoying character.
Then I started watching movies with "Coldwater" from 2013, a thriller about bad things going on in a juvenile reform camp. Good intentions but nothing special here.
Next was "Deadfall" with Eric Bana, Charlie Hunnam and other interesting actors. A bloody thriller with some underlying black humor. It was fine.
Then I watched Joe Lynch´s Salma Hayek shootout "Everly", which had a great first half and a not so great second half. All in all it was pretty entertaining.
I concluded my sunday movies with Don Coscarelli´s "John dies at the end", which was crazy as hell, very entertaining and darkly funny.
That was a perfect bridge to finally start season 6 of "The Walking Dead". I made it to episode 7 and was pleasantly surprised about the lack of idiotic situations and decisions, that normally make me think about giving up on the series. If it holds on this might become one of the best seasons.
