Weekend Open Thread

I'm coming to get you, Barbara.

What a week! Killer POV wrapped up. Ted Cruz picked a running mate. We're just a week away from the kickoff of the summer movie season. How did we get here?

Sound off below about all the stuff you want to talk about. Probably movies.

  1. Watched Sing Street again. Came to my theater for a full release as opposed to the screening I saw so I took my mom to see it since I really wanted to see it again and I knew it was something she'd like (she's a fan of Once also and just about anything involving Ireland).

Also watched Green Room which I talked about briefly in the comments for Adam Riske's review.

Aside from that I haven't had much time for anything since I've been getting ready for a rare business trip to Orlando which I'm excited about. I live in the SF Bay Area though so I've been enjoying the anti-Trump protests nearby.

And finally we're one month out from Junesploitation which I'm super excited about. I really appreciate the work of Patrick and everyone that contributes to this site as well as everyone in the community. I'm looking forward to experiencing my first Junesploitation with you guys.

  2. Just a bit of fun if anyone wants to join in, I need cheering up, describing a crappy day in 2016, there have been lots of them, using only movie names...

It felt like a "Black Sunrise", A "Night of the Demons", I went totally "Psycho" at the "Edge of Sanity" in "February" and got "Frozen" because since "Burying the Ex" at "Ten to Midnight" while "The Evil Dead" was "Sinister" and "Insidious" I have become "Scared to Death" of "The Return of the Living dead" coming and then "Knock Knock" "The Thing" was at my door, the "Last house on the Left", I was having an "Identity" crisis, it was such a "Shocker"! It was in "Bad Taste", And "Now the Screaming Starts" there saying "You're Next" who were these "Killers", there giving me the "Shivers", they were all "Rabid", I wanted to put all "Three on a Meathook". I could not see" Behind the Mask", they were playing "Funny Games" and definitely "Taking lives" they wanted "Cheap Thrills" and "Very bad things" were coming, I was becoming "Un-Hinged", and then came the "Dead Silence", I was "Trapped" in a "Scary Movie", I started to grind my "Teeth" this sensation weirdly gave me the "Munchies", but they wanted to chop me into "Pieces", this "Nightmare on Elm Street" had to stop, I ran through the "House" and through "The Gate" into "The Fog", and then out of "The Mist" into "The Dead Zone" came "Cujo!" "It" thought I was an "Intruder" and it wanted its "Naked Lunch". it bit me in the "Ghoulies" and I started to "Scream", I was going to be "Eaten Alive", but the "Demon" was distracted by a "Cat's eye" in "The Dark" I ran from this "Final Terror" thinking why on "Friday the 13th" my "Bloody Birthday" did all this stuff start "Happening" I ran away from "The Curse" and into "The Mouth of Madness

    1. Well played good Sir (enjoyed the intelligence and ingenuity). Keep your head up and may your "Force Awaken" (cheated but my heart waist the right place). :)

  3. Saw Captain America: Civil War last night. No big deal. I won't go into it here, I'll just say that it's excellent. Not the best Marvel movie like some have said, but everything in it just works. There are a lot of characters and a lot of plot, but it doesn't feel over-stuffed like Ultron did. I have confidence in the same guys writing and directing the mammoth Infinity War.

  4. For all you aspiring Italian movie directors, who are stuck creating a title for your film (or rather, the requisite Italian title and 2 alternate English ones), you might want to waste a couple minutes with the Giallo Generator!

    2. I love how the movie titles have absolutely no connection to the plot summery!

  5. Hockey playoff have taken a bite from movie watching, but one notable movie I saw was The Proposition (2005), a western shot in Australia. It's quite a visceral movie, with many characters struggling between what they know they should do, and what they want to do. Quite a contrast between the natural beauty of the Australian outback, and the gritty violence of the folks inhabiting that time and place. And the constant flies! The shoot must have been hellish.

    1. Ditto on the hockey playoffs, except the Finnish National League finals finished this week (my team won the Championship!!), and I've watched maybe a dozen movies in the last month, which is pathetic. Hopefully I'll be getting back on the horse now that it's finished (and we won!!).

    3. Pathetic was a stupid word to use, but you get the idea.

    4. Congrats...winning is fun! It's definitely not pathetic. Although everyone here shares a love for movies, I would hope that movies are only one of several things that each of us love. I would go crazy (and weigh a lot more), if I didn't balance out movie time with loads of playing ball hockey.

    5. Danny Huston is so good in it.

  6. Only a month till Junesploitation! Who's excited already? I know I am.

Already made a few purchases that are just sitting on the shelf and waiting for June. A few obvious choices (like Coffy, Suspiria and Spring) and a few really out there choices. Those are the ones I'm looking forward to the most.

  7. I found something awesome.
EMILIE - This is a new, indie horror movie from a first time director that comes out on DVD next week. I feel so fortunate to have discovered this because it is brilliant. It is unbelievably intense. It's disturbing. It's fasinating. The acting is phenomenonal. Really guys, this evil babysitter flick is a gem. Highly recommended!

I also went to see Green Room and Keanu. One is incredible and one of my favorite movies of the year by far. The other is a fun time mostly because Key is a hilarious comic.

    2. Alright! I was curious if anyone else here had seen it yet. It's easily in my top 10 so far as well.

  8. Watched Freddie got fingered again last night. I had not seen it in a good decade and, distressingly, it is just as funny as I remember. It's one of those ones that is impossible to recommend however as no one else I know likes it and I understand why. I can't think of a single other film I like that falls into this category. I love how completely insane and drunk rip torn is throughout.

    1. You're not the only one Shane. I'm with you. I saw it opening night, there were only a handful of people in the theater (obviously). Everyone walked out by the end except my friend and I. Have you listened to Tom Green's commentary on the DVD? It is truly insane. He stops his commentary halfway through and just makes weird noises for the duration.

    2. I'm with both of you. Of course it's not great, but I think it's exactly what Tom Green really wanted to make. It's way over the top, it's super-childish and immature, and it's really stupid. These are all good things.

    3. Thanks for the heads up on the commentary Matt. I'll definitely have to check that out. I found myself spending yesterday thinking of the scene where he screams Deutschmarks into his family's cordless phone at the fancy restaraunt and laughing my ass off. Very relieved to to hear I am not the only one who likes it.

  9. Finally got a chance to see it last night, and I'm going to make a prediction that's sure to go wrong: I don't think I'll see a moviebetter than Green Room this year.

  10. I thought Green Room was great. There were a couple of things that bothered me but overall I thought it was awesome.

I also watched The Station Agent a few days ago. I absolutely loved it.

  12. I saw Green Room. I liked it, didn't love it. I'm still trying to figure out why that is. It had some really great and intense moments that I loved but then it did some stuff that kinda bothered me. The villains were supposed to be these bad asses but I thought they kept making weird and sloppy decisions that killed the momentum for me. I thought one of the main actresses was miscast. It wasn't quite the movie I thought it was going to be in my head which is why I think I'll like it better when I see it a second time. It was pretty cool though. I just wanted to love it more and I kept running into a few problems with where the story went. Everyone see it.

  13. Just finished season 6 of "The walking dead". Great season, maybe the best.

Finally I saw John Augusts "The Nines", a strange but very interesting movie reminding me how good of a dramatic actor Ryan Reynolds is. But the biggest surprise was Melissa McCarthy in a very good dramatic turn. I think it´s the first film I liked her in, playing not her usual fat obnoxious comedienne.

While ironing some clothes, I watched another fine Reynolds film, Joe Carnahan´s bloody "Smokin aces". Unbelievable starry cast with recognizeable faces in every frame.

And now it´s time to drive to my movie theater and watch "Captain America - Civil war". I´m really excited...

  14. Watched 1995's "Kiss of Death" on Netflix yesterday. Is it me or this the best film David Caruso has ever done in between leaving NYPD Blue and his comeback with CSI: Miami?
