  1. Just as an opinion, I think the format is great the way it is. But, if you think it'll drive more traffic, or something else positive, I'd say just do what you think is best.

  2. I love the "push record and talk" method you guys have. Like the comment above me, I trust whatever direction you decide to go into.

As a side comment, my girlfriend just told me she doesn't like Back to the Future. Any advice?

    2. Is it sad my heart jumped a beat when somebody who I've never met replied to me? I mean our only connection is we're two of the seventeen people who have seen Deli Man.

    3. Deli Man! That movie should have made my top ten last year. Adios Mad Max Fury Road!

  3. I cheered out loud when I heard that Cait listens to MBMBAM. So funny. I would also recommend "The Adventure Zone."

  4. A movie about fanatics threatening a female video game developer? As if THAT would ever happen in real life.

  5. agreed 100 times about Gone Girl. Except I dont blame Fincher as much as the screenplay by Flynn which is to say I think its...confused.

  6. The added production you're asking about works well for certain kinds of podcasts, particularly ones that tell a story or include interviews, like Planet Money or Serial. And works well for podcasts that are put together like newscasts or documentaries.

For podcasts that are more like a get-together over coffee, I find extra production can feel forced and disrupt the conversational flow. Post-production add-ins don't work well in that context.

Also, when movie-focused podcasts drop in movie clips, it's weird because film is kind of a visual medium. If I'm already familiar with the clip, then it's okay. But if I'm not, the clip adds little and is often filled with pauses or sound effects that just leave me wondering what exactly I'm supposed to be getting out of it.

In short, I wouldn't recommend that kind of post-production for F This Movie!

On a related note, I know you've considered rebranding before, changing "F This Movie!" to something else. That's a move I would probably support. When I first discovered the podcast my book-cover judgement was "oh boy, these guys just rip apart movies." It's a small hurdle to entry; the title doesn't reflect what you're about.

    1. I'm pretty much on the same page. F This Movie has always felt like a casual conversation with friends, and I feel introducing movie clips and whatnot would just disrupt that feeling.

What I'm saying is, Mr. Smarty Man lives up to his name.

    2. Yeah, most of my favorite podcasts tend to lack any real production aside from maybe an ad break or two. I think any podcast that people listen to for the personalities involved benefits from less production by allowing the audience to almost feel like they're in the room during the conversation. I also believe that this sense of closeness is a big factor in what has brought such a good community of people together here also, whereas my feeling is that production creates a sense of artifice that distances the audience from the hosts.

However if there are certain topics that would benefit from a highly produced structure (for instance if Patrick interviewed multiple people about a certain subject) I'm sure most people wouldn't object to it as an occasional thing.

  9. F This Movie is my favorite movie discussion podcast. The reason: tight, funny discussions and recommendations. Patrick Bromley is lightning fast with jokes and insightful analysis in equal measure. Some podcasts go deeper and have more production but get a bit long winded and boring at times (like The Projection Booth). Others are more comical but less educational (How Did This Get Made?). FTM is the perfect blend. I wouldn't change a thing.

    1. We Hate Movies is even funnier than HDTGM. I came to F This Movie thinking it would be a site that rips apart movies as well, but have grown to appreciate their more measured and contemplative approach to film critique. There are plenty of other podcasts that keep the one-liners coming. F this Movie is not that, it's its own beast.

Sorry! I actually love The Projection Booth for the most part but I don't have the concentration span for some of the longer, multiple interviews.

  10. I say bring on the soundbites. I love the conversation here, but sometimes you guys have voices that become monotonous (no fault of your own) and I think it would help to intersperse some clips and samples throughout the hour or two I order to spice things up a bit.

  11. I like the podcast the way it is. The only thing I would change would be to add more JB. He's my favorite.

  12. If you change the name of the site, the only other name that would work would be Hug This Movie Too Hard.

    3. The only problem with Bromley Forever is Tommy Lee Jones' performance. Too much like the Joker.

  13. Was that a very short podcast? I feel like it went by very fast. It's a pleasure hearing Cait, who I guess I missed on the F Breast Cancer podcast. I want to hear/read a review on In The Cut pleaes btw :) Stylized performances always throw me off but at the same time I realize I don't confuse them with bad acting or anything "bad". Like Kristen Stewart does bad acting (yes, still!!), but Holly Hunter in A Life Less Ordinary was just....so stylized and strange, and eventually compelling. It's...a good thing I guess, particularly for making repeat viewings interesting. (Btw when did everyone get off the Nicolas Cage wagon?). I want to see Existenz, although reading the full plot just made me kind of queazy. This week I've been reliving the kind of crush I would have as a 15 year old on pretty, angel-child face Cillian Murphy. I'm not crazy about most of his movies (though I think he's a good actor) but anyway...his prettiness is unreal. He must have huge complexes.

    2. Haha! THANKS! Yea I watch that show on mute sometimes. Because Cillian Murphy looks best in period drag and that hair is perfect for his face. It's obvious they wanted this guy, who looks like an angel, to be a gangster. I tried to watch the first season for real but his character pimps out and humiliates his own gf, uses another girl, and uses ANOTHER girl as bait and she's raped and strangled close to death consequentially. So as a woman, like I'm not sure what I was supposed to find appealing about his character romantically (and non-romantically he's just another gangster). Except for his hair? It's worth it on mute once in a while, though, it is. Also Youtube compilations of the show - I do enjoy those :)

  14. "We're all meat sacks." This podcast just gets me.

As for potential chances, I don't think anything drastic needs to happen. The format isn't stale for me and I love the diversity of the crew and the range of movies you chose to discuss is top notch. Every week is a treat. There's a reason this place is my go-to podcast and I've listened to many episodes multiple times.

A few episodes have more than one guest, maybe those types of discussions bring a different dynamic all on their own. Maybe that's a logistic nightmare though.

  15. Who wants you to change the format? I feel like the use of sound effects and music is fine if you feel they are necessary, but if you're doing it for the wrong reasons or forcing it then it comes off as inauthentic. We come for your words, not for the 'cheap pops' and morning zoo sound effects anyways, idk. If it's for comedy, then you don't need it, you're funny enough on your own.

Is this eXistenz movie streaming anywhere? I listened to the show and I am intrigued. Never seen it.

  16. I rented this a while back and wanted a copy for my library. If you like plot twists and heavy sci-fi you will like this movie. It is kind of gruesome in several scenes and probably not for little kids.

  17. Sound effects? Bring back the Quibbler! (Please don't bring back the Quibbler....)

In terms of changing things up, I'd love a once a month F Everything - not just with Doug, but with other guests like you did with Riske that time. I'd LOVE a freeform F Everything with JB, or with Adam Beta, with Erica, etc... Just you guys shooting the breeze around a general "theme" rather than a single movie.

Also, perhaps periscoping a podcast? Could that be a thing? Loved the F This Movie Fest periscope this year. I'd love to see the Best of Podcast live.

That being said, I love the movie discussion "format" as it currently stands. It really lets your chemistry with the co-hosts come through. It feels less like a "show" and more like catching up with this great little community. You rock. Keep rocking.

THAT BEING SAID, If you really wanted to try the overproduced show thing, I wouldn't mind more of those F This Movie video things like you did with Doug (or whoever else is on standby). They could even be released in audio form as well. They were brilliant, stupid, zany chunks of FTM goodness.

  18. RE: the format and podcast production, imagine a new listener happens upon your podcast for the first time. It's like turning on a new movie and looking for character development. The tone and clips and choice in theme songs all provide context on who you and your guests are. I've listened to about 25 or so of your eps, and so far, it's been dry and straight-forward movie nerd banter. Other movie podcasts I listen to break the review into segments with audio intros, dissecting the film they review in distinct parts, turning the podcast into an entertaining product all its own. But more important than anything is original content and talk about things others don't, which F This Movie definitely does. I haven't heard of half the films you bring up as casual movies you might watch, so that's definitely the refreshing part among other podcasts.

  19. It could be for homework, for your thesis, what food to order, places to go to, or even movie reviews to find out about films that you intend to watch.
