  1. You can rest easy regarding 10 Cloverfield Lane. It is greatly appreciated, at least by me. Spoilers for my list, but it is my second favorite movie of the year. Maybe I'll find somewhere down the line that I'm actually overrating it to that end, but for now I love it a lot.

    1. I saw Cloverfield Lane a few days ago, and also really loved it. Those performances were incredible, especially Goodman and Winstead. Watching it I wondered why it took me so long to watch.

Oh and great podcast as usual guys! I look forward to this one, to fill gaps for the year.

  2. Great episode! To add in some underrated gems, I'd throw in Hush, neon demon, the nice guys, and the hunt for the Wilderpeople. Maybe not among movie lovers, but underrated by the general public.

    1. I also feel that The Nice Guys was criminally underrated. It didn't make nearly as much money as it should have, and when I posted my top 10 of the year on social media, one of the first comments I got was "But The Nice Guys was awful!" I thoroughly disagree with that sentiment. Ryan Gosling is hysterical in that movie, and his chemistry with Russel Crowe is excellent! I loved it!

    2. That is, I agree with your assessment that it was underrated by the general public.

    3. i liked The Nice Guys a lot, but to me it was just another version of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and that killed it to me.

but it's still a very well made movei that deserve every praise it gets

    4. Nice Guys should have made all the money. It's in my Top Ten of 2016 and I just rewatched it a couple days ago - even better the second time

    5. I understand they have similarities, but I personally liked The Nice Guys much more than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

    6. I think this one achieves what Kiss Kiss Bang Bang almost did – it has fun winking at the audience, while still making us love the characters, and be genuinely invested in their stories

  3. I definitely need to see 10 Cloverfield Lane and Popstar again. I haven't sent Edge of Seventeen yet but it's on my "Need to Watch" list. I really liked Don't Think Twice, but I think it was pretty perfectly rated. The same goes for Magnificent Seven - after it was over I said to my partner, "Well that wasn't half bad," and she replied "I think that was exactly half bad." I really want to see In the Valley of Violence - I finally caught up with The House of the Devil this year and really dug it. You've piqued my interest in a Bigger Splash. Finally, here's my overrated, underrated, and ugly for 2016:

    Overrated
Jackie - saw it yesterday and reeeeally didn't like it
The Jungle Book - great animation but a really muddled story and an insufferable (in my opinion) main character
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - saw it again and liked it even less the second time

    Ugly
    Independance Day: Resurgence
    Suicide Squad
X-Men: Apocalypse - the less said about these three movies the better

    Underrated
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - I really enjoyed the Batman stuff and would be interested in seeing a Batman-only fan cut
The Boy - I thought this was a really fun horror movie that didn't deserve the critical lashing it got
Hardcore Henry - I'm not proud of it, but I had a good time

    1. why not proud of hardcore henry?

    2. The characters were pretty forgettable, and I thought it had Michael Bay levels of misogyny and homophobia. But the action was really well done, and I liked Sharlto Copley. I also saw it in D-Box which was the perfect way to see this movie

  4. I want a buddy cop comedy called Cutesiness & Quirk. Maybe Paul Dano as one of the leads?

    1. With a Steve Carrel in a beard playing the villain!

  5. I just watched Swiss Army Man a second time and my love for it was confirmed, with the absolute understanding that it is in no way meant for everyone.

  6. The "Guns of Navarone" commend was interesting, because one of the first things I said when I left Rogue One was that it should have been more like it.

  7. I'm guessing Magnificent 7 and others like it earn the pg13 rating by not having any blood.

A Bigger Splash is SO good. It's perfectly European but not pretentious with 4 great performances and a nice little thriller with some good eroticism in there.

  8. Overrated

The Jungle Book - The special effects are nice, but I've seen this story told better a half dozen times.

Deadpool - If the humor doesn't work, like it didn't for me, there really isn't anything here.

Dr. Strange - I think I've seen this movie before.

    Ugly

London Has Fallen - Miserable in every way.

Zoolander 2 - Sometimes your high school friends should remain confined to your high school memories.

    Underrated

Mascots - a lesser Guest mockumentary, but still very entertaining.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - I think I just like Tina Fey more than most people.

Batman v Superman - Specifically the extended edition. Telling someone who hated a move to watch the version that is 30 minutes longer is not a good recipe to change their mind, but after watching "The Ultimate Cut" I a very confused at how they ended up with the theatrical cut. The fight scenes are untouched, but every character moment for Superman and about half of the plot was cut out. Clearly stuff less important than Batman watching trailers for future DC movies. The long version doesn't solve all the movies problems, and in fact exacerbates the problem that the movie is too damn long, but I found it considerably more enjoyable.

This is the first time I've commented here, but I started reading this site and listening to you guys early this year. I want to thank you guys for everything you do. I love this site and the podcast.

  9. You talked me into seeing collateral beauty. I just gotta see it now

  10. Secret Life of Pets (which my kids have not seen) sounds like it should have been a short instead of a feature. I tried to also save my kids from Angry Birds, but my son was invited to a birthday party that included viewing it at a theater. Hard to party-block on the grounds of not liking the movie choice.
