  1. Congrats on the book, Heather! Good lists, both of you and really enjoyed hearing you discuss Horror in general and the specific films in detail. I still haven't seen "The Wailing" and need to remedy that.

If I had to do a top Horror only it would be:

    1. The Witch
    2. February a.k.a Blackcoat’s Daughter
    3. Darling
    4. The Man in the Orange Jacket
    5. Lake Nowhere
    6. Southbound
    7. Intruders
    8. The Mind’s Eye
    9. Crush the Skull
    10. Emelie

Just shows exactly what you guys discussed - that it's really just a matter of how you are affected by a film; "subjective taste". Each one of these made me respond in different ways and all lingered longer than the others including films that I would say are "better" films.

    1. Thanks so much - and I love that you put Crush the Skull on your list too (I saw it in 2015 and had completely forgotten it got a proper release last year). Cheers!

    2. Crush The Skull was so much fun and I generally do not respond to Horror Comedies. For such a small film, I thought the lead Writer, Director and Actor really showed skill in all three areas. Plus, they all seemed to be having a great time as well and that left me happy.

    3. thanks for your list! will be checking them out soon!

    4. Ooo! Haven't heard of most of those! I used to subscribe to Rue Morgue, which kept me up to date. I really loved The VVitch and Southbound. Thank you so much for posting; looking forward to checking them out!

    5. Thank you both! Welcome aboard!

  2. Really happy you had I Am Not A Serial Killer so high. I even recommended it to my Mom, who is definitely not a horror fan, but I found storytelling and characters were so beautifuly done it's really one of my favorite movies of the year.

    1. Hearing all the buzz the last few days has made this something I'm definitely going to be (finally) giving a watch over the weekend. Glad to hear you loved it too (very excited to finally see it).

  3. Regarding 10 Cloverfield Lane, I love it in spite of an ending that may be controversial. Like Patrick, I've come to terms with it, and I'm not going to let 10 minutes spoil an otherwise fantastic previous 90 minutes and two killer performances throughout. Just my two cents.

    1. There's an interesting video on YouTube that connects 10 Cloverfield Lane to the original Cloverfield that offers some interesting insight on the last ten minutes. If you're into those kinds of things, it's worth a listen.

    2. I just watched a video the other day that was a theory on the connective tissue between 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield. It was probably the same one you're referencing, and yes, it was interesting. I kind of like the idea of just thinking about Cloverfield as an anthology series now, though. I think that mode of thinking makes 10CL a more enjoyable viewing experience, by thinking of it as it's own thing and not trying to compare or connect it to something else.

    3. On subsequent viewings, I've been able to see the ending sequence of 10 Cloverfield Lane a little differently, beyond the Spielbergian influence. I think it may even ground Goodman's character even more. Earlier in the film, Goodman speculates that one of many possible outcomes on the outside is an alien invasion. His two "guests" think he's crazy, and so do we. But then Mary Elizabeth Winstead makes it outside and realizes it IS an alien invasion after all and Goodman's assertion was correct. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and a crazy person can often be right about some things, proving there's no such thing as absolute good or absolute evil. But that's what makes trusting a stranger even more scary. It reminds me of Ms. Carmody in The Mist. She was crazy as a loon, but her warnings were pretty much on the money.

  4. Heather Wixson episodes are worth skipping. She offers very little to the conversation beyond rhetoric and self promotion.

    1. Anonymous comments are worth skipping. They offer very little beyond cowardly, asshole trolling.

    2. If you don't like Heather Wixson podcasts, how do you like any podcasts?

    3. I think Adam is right. Adrian Grenier is the architect of all Heather's pain.

    4. god help her if she talk about her in relation to the subject discussed.

everybody would talk about their own book in this situation

heather, keep it up. i'm not a fan of horror, but hearing you and patrick talking about it for almost 3 hours make it sound interesting

    5. I love hearing Heather talk about movies - She is so incredibly well-spoken, smart, and passionate (the latter being my favorite because I can just hear the love of cinema in her voice; something I share). I adore the horror genre and love it when intelligent people have meaningful discussions about it. Would love to hear more from Heather! Good luck with the book; I'm looking forward to reading your pieces on Daily Dead!

  5. Cool, appreciate the listen Anonymous. I'll just leave the podcasting to the pros then!

    1. I have to disagree with that anonymous fellow. Especially your words about Anton Yelchin were touching and speak to how one can feel a loss without being a close friend of an individual.

    2. Heather is the best - listening to Heather's episodes is one of the reasons why I started watching horror again!

    3. Nooo! Don't leave us, Heather! Anonymous was a shitty movie anyway. Heathers > Anonymous, any day of the week.

    4. Don't feed the trolls! Heather you're almost my favorite person on the internet. Come on the show more please. ;)

  6. Heather you are great! Beyond this epic podcast, and many other things, I love your passion for 90's horror. Plus I feel less guilty about loving Resident Evil and Underworld. I know silly but I have fun. Keep being awesome and good luck with your books, I'll be grabbing them.

  7. i freakin looooved Shin Godzilla. they showed it 3 times over a week when it came out. i was able to attend only 1 showing, but it was wonderful.

about the blu-ray. it's coming out in march, in japan. our blu-ray players usually can play the japanese releases, but i don't see any mention for english subtitles on the japanese release, so we'll have to wait.

i don't see any official release date for north america

  8. Firstly, I appreciate the comparison of choosing your favourite movies to a woman choosing which one of her children dies at the hands of Nazis. I like to refer to all of my relatively mundane decisions (e.g. what I'm having for lunch) as Sophie's Choices. Not in a Mel Gibson kind of way, more of Mel Brooks kind of way?

Also, my review for Autopsy of Jane Doe is "Wildly Unforseeable" - back off Top Critic, some of us are trying to work our way up from below the bottom! But yeah that grabbed me in exactly the same way - i.e. oh shit, that's going to be me on that table someday - I think the movie deserves huge props for touching on that universality perhaps like never before.

I love when Heather Doug'ed you with her No. 1 pick being 31 - nice one, Heather.

Thanks for this great show and a great list of movies to check out. I was surprised by how many I did manage to see this year (and there's nothing on either of your lists I'd disagree with) but always grateful for a few more must-sees. Cheers to 2016 being an awesome year for horror!

P.S. Looking forward to your books Heather!

    1. It's a bit unpolished, but it's so damn sweet and endearing. Considering Fright Night is my favorite horror film, that's the kind of movie that really speaks to me. Beyond the Gates isn't the best horror movie of the year, but I have little doubt it's the one I'll revisit the most. Damn, I love it.

    2. My original comment "Beyond the Gates was terrible", was a bit dumb and I apologize. I watched it after a bad day, and I was a little liquored up. I have since watched it sober, and in a better mood. I still don't think it was very good, but it was far from terrible and there are redeeming qualities. Also, don't drink and post.

  11. For the second time in recent months listening to this Podcast, I had to drop everything and go watch something that was recommended! The first time was Cloud Atlas (I had only been putting it off until I read the book, but I gave that up so I could listen to the Podcast immediately - And I'm so glad I did! I bawled my eyes out and loved it so so much)... The second one was I am Not a Serial Killer, after it was Patrick's #2, and it was EXCELLENT and very unexpected.

Anyway, I enjoyed this Podcast as I am a huge horror fan - Made a few mental notes of what I needed to see - but I was curious- Do you list your Top 10's and Honorable Mentions somewhere on the site where I can reference? Apologies if I missed it.

Can't wait to check out The Wailing and Autopsy of Jane Doe, among others.

  12. Couldn't love Heather more after hearing her top pick as well as her heartfelt sentiment for Anton Yelchin.

  13. Just got around to listening. I laughed out loud at Patrick's barely audible "era" after Heather had said the word.

It's the little things that brighten our days.

  14. Anybody remember the list and can post it in the comments? After listening i wanted to check out a lot of them but can't for the life of me remember most of them.

    4. The Wailing
    5. 10 Cloverfield Lane

  16. a few days with the wife and baby away at the in-laws, so catching up on some movies. Just watched The Invitation. really good. I knew nothing about it going in, and besides that the recommendation came from a top 10 Horror movie list I couldnt really tell which way the movie was going to go. Ultimately it was to the movie's credit that the main characters internal arc was really compelling so i was invested regardless of the direction the plot went. It created some very well earned moments that resonated quite powerfully with me.
    Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Oh, and Heather is awesome. #MonsterSquadBook

    1. Hey man, I know this is an oldie, but have you ever seen Rosemary's Baby? It's one I watched for the first time relatively soon after my wife's pregnancy and I think that helped make it connect so much harder. Became an instant favourite for me!

    2. Rosemary's Baby is amongst a million classics that I havent seen. I should put it on my watch list. thanks for the tip.

  18. Just watch Don't Breathe. I thought it was great.
A wonderful example of great moments well earned, i.e. Alex on the glass, Rocky in the in the vent, "lights out".

All of these movies i wouldnt have seen if it wasnt for the show. Thanks

  19. Enjoyed 'I Am Not A Serial Killer' - would not have heard of this flick if not for you show. Thanks and looking forward to the next visit from The Horror Chick - those shows are always fun - and your varying perspectives and tastes are insightful.
