  2. Oh the happy feelings I had hearing JB drop a Too Much Joy reference! They are one of my very favorite bands and it always makes me happy to find others who like them. It made my morning

  3. JB - if you meet Ivan Reitman can you tell him I think Draft Day is one of the 4 best movies of the past 4 years?

  4. i second The A-Team. i don't always love Sharlto Copley (not his fault most of the time) but in this he was great. the tank scene is one of the greatest, funniest scene in recent years. when it came out i couldn't understand why people didn't like it. it's so darn fun.

  5. Great episode. Way to make me add like 10 more things on my list of thousands of things to watch and rewatch. My #1 overlooked 2000s movie is 2005’s Brick from a little lesser known director named Rian Johnson. But seriously, If you haven’t seen it and love the Noir genre(or even if you don’t and can just acknowledge it exists), I can whole heartedly recommend it. It’s an incredibly written and funny movie that simultaneously pays homage to and plays with the genre in clever new ways. One of my all time favorites. It’s a small independent movie that definitely seems like it’ll get buried beneath the sands of time.

    1. Man, brick is great. Thank you for reminding me about that one. I hadn't thought about it in awhile.

  6. My Blueberry Night is great. I really wish for a proper north american blu-ray

  7. I just got really excited that Day Of The Locust is going to be discussed. What a fascinating mess of a movie.

  8. Glad this podcast was made since this is probably my favorite subject to talk about. So happy The Weatherman, The Pledge and Synecdoche, New York were mentioned.

    1. Little Children (2006)

    3. Mysterious Skin (2004)
    4. Failan (Korea; 2001)

    1. Indeed. Bug, Moon, Assassination, and Adventureland were all on earlier drafts of my list!

    2. I just rewatched Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada last week! It's a great movie, and didn't get enough love. Although not surprising, as it's a western being released in 2005..

The Korean movies you mentioned are all amazingly good. The Machinist I watched very very late one night, and I really liked it, but it's mostly dulled by alcohol unfortunately. The scene early on the bridge was heartbreaking and left me in tears. I'll revisit it. Thanks for the recommendations!

    3. Moon has been recommended to me so many times, that I'm saving it for a "special occasion"....which means I'll watch it 4 years from now....I should just watch it, haha.

  9. Loved the episode, and agree that Femme Fatale and Hail Caesar are masterpieces.

  10. Great podcast, fellas. Underappreciated films is hard to do in the internet age, since just about every film has some kind of following. I wanted to chime in on Hail Ceasar tho. I saw that opening weekend and was pretty let down. And I think it had to do with my expectations and the marketing. It was marketed as a noir-comedy-mystery, in the vain of Big Lebowski. Then you get there, and it's about Josh Brolin's internal conflicts and George Clooney reading Marx in a beach house, complete with a dance number. I definately need to rewatch it soon.

However, I dont even think it's the Coen's most underrated. I am, evidently, the only fan of Burn After Reading on the planet. I think it's really brilliant and one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

    1. I’m with ya Burn After Reading is awesome and very rewatchable, love that runtime!

    2. Thirded on Burn After Reading. It is gut-bustingly hilarious. ! Although I will add: Hail Caesar > Burn After Reading > Big Lebowski. Come at me bros!

    3. Haha my order is probably the exact opposite. But it's all good, it's hard to find fault with the Coens. I'll go as far to say that I think they produced the best movie of the whole decade in No Country for Old Men.

I'd also like to throw out a vote for Panic Room. It may not be Fincher's best, but I think it holds up remarkably.

    4. I think I’m with Matt here. I love all their comedies, I love the nature of their humor (a lot), except BL. And I don’t know why.

  11. Great episode! I'm always happy to see a 2 hour plus episode when I download the show on Wednesday mornings. I was surprised no one mentioned Running Scared with Paul Walker. I'm constantly beating the drum for that one. Q

  12. I would pay good money to see Mr. T star in Robert Altman's MR. T AND THE WOMEN.

  13. The twist ending at the end of this podcast is an instant classic F This Movie moment. Loved this podcast! I will throw my hat in the ring with Michael Mann’s Blackhat being criminally underrated. It’s great!!

    1. I loved Blackhat. No one I know has seen it. It's strange that the internet's biggest criticism seemed to be "That's Thor. He couldn't possibly be a hacker".

  14. The only person I've seen/heard champion Miami Vice besides Patrick is Bill Simmons. He created the 30 for 30 docs & Andre The Giant doc on HBO. Also, has a popular podcast. He is all in on Miami Vice. He even did an hour podcast all about the overlooked and largely misunderstood cult classic Miami Vice. Patrick, You aren't the only one on that Miami Vice island.

  16. This is such a great episode so far and im only at the Wonderland discussion part. I rented that movie at "Flick" video in my hometown based only on the cover. They only had one copy and it was always gone. I rented it and liked it enough, but thought it was "weird" at 16 years old. Watched it last year and loved it.

  17. I haven't listened yet, but looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Alien vs Predator: Requiem (whether liked or disliked). I personally think it's a lot of fun, and is unfairly disparaged. I've listened to 2 Podcasts that did a Aliens franchise series, and they both just dismissively skipped it! Which is unfortunate, because there are some weird post production problems with it that I think would make for an interesting topic of discussion (compared to a discussion of a movie that is merely boring, for example).

    1. "It's considerably worse"...haha! I've seen it a few times, so I know I like it, and am not horribly mistaken...oh well.

Regarding the lighting, as you mentioned the DOC was Daniel Pearl, so it wasn't badly lighted. You can even see scenes in the trailer that are very "visible", but are dark as night in the actual movie. For whatever reason, they darkened the whole thing in post. Why? Who knows. Maybe it didn't look so great. They were going with mostly practical alien-in-a-rubber-costume stuff. But it lies on the the directors shoulders, rather than on the cinematographer. Their next, and final movie, was trash, so maybe they just suck...

But I still like this one..

  18. Great picks. I would’ve included a lot of them. Femme Fatale, Hail Caesar, Patrick you don’t have to convince me are great movies. The way the Coens treat those western scenes, I’m thinking mostly of the singing cowboy scene, is with so much love and admiration for them. I’d love to hear a podcast on De Palma himself, or maybe one of his thrillers, and I say that bc I know you did Scarface already. I just know you’d have great things to say about his technique and motives.

Can’t wait to hear JB back for the Summer wrap up show!

  19. JB--Thank you for giving some love for Wonderland! Dark, yet touching movie. I agree 100% with you that Boogie Nights played that scene for laughs. I also can't believe I'm the only one who thinks this film owns the Gordon Lightfoot song. Thanks for the verification Patrick!

  20. The cassette I reference in the podcast is "Get the Ghost" by Brahm, and the song I love is entitled "Cast a Shadow." Your lives will be improved the very moment you buy this music... and because Chaybee did not respond within an hour, I have the right to use the song on my annual Halloween CD. #legallybindingbullshit
