This is the Weekend Open Thread.

  1. I'm about to hop onto a bus to Helsinki for my fifth year at Helsinki International Film Festival. Planning to see a total of 18 movies in five days. Most looking forward to Mandy and Searching, both of which I'm seeing on my last day. Others include a Brazilian werewolf movie called Good Manners, horror comedy Anna and the Apocalypse and Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, an Estonian scifi movie from the 70's. I'll report back next weekend.

    1. Is it a really busy festival? Like, is it sold out at every screening?

    2. I've seen 50+ festival screenings at HIFF over the years and maybe 10-15 of them have been totally sold out. The combination of a hyped movie and a Friday or Saturday night usually does it.

That being said, all screenings of Mandy have already been sold out, including weekdays. Mandy isn't getting a wide release here.

    3. One sold out screening was tonight's Good Manners, a strange and wonderful werewolf movie from Brazil. I loved how it takes its time, then pulls the rug from under you. Highly recommend.

  2. Oh, and a couple of days ago I watched a "back to 1995" double feature with Congo and The Net. Both movies are... very 90's I guess.

  3. Getting very excited for SMM. Just listened to Patrick talking about Halloween playlists on Corpse Club. This burner by Johnny Otis is my favorite way to ease into the season.

  4. Take this for what it's worth because I am in no way passionate about the Star Wars franchise like some of my dear friends. The last one I had fun watching was EPISODE 3.

I watched Solo last night and I liked it a lot. Had a lot of fun with it and thought homeboy captured the mannerisms and inflection of Ford's Han pretty damn perfectly. He reminded me of a young Dennis Quaid actually. It's also a perfect film for Ron Howard to have directed cause it's just as generic but technically sound as the rest of the modern ones, which is Howard's M.O. I did like the aesthetic of this one quite a bit though, for a CGI film.

Almost nonstop action set pieces with none of this nonsense dialog with imperial lords of planets and shit I can't keep up with. Straight forward, to the point, and knows what it is. After all, Star Crash is still my favorite Star Wars movie cause... Caroline Monroe 👍

Also watched "Fearmaker"; 70's obscure Horror/Thriller from Mexico - more Hitchcock than Horror but good enough. "Campfire Tales" obscure Horror anthology from the mid 80's, "American Ninja" which I hadn't seen as a kid and it's just as good as I remembered. And lastly, "Clownhouse" which I hadn't seen since it's release. Yes, it's a controversial watch because Salva is an awful person but if you can't separate the art from the artists behind them then you need to stop watching films because 99% of people in Hollywoodland are fucked up, out of touch with reality and delusional people. It was a fun watch though I am not a fan of the clown sub-genre so it really did nothing for me. I like the way it was shot though. Sorry for the Vargas length post. :) Love ya, bud!

  5. I was going to watch Predators after the podcast inspired it, but I don't think I'm drunk enough. There's simply not enough listerine in the house.

  6. “We know that the military needs to reduce casualties.” -Actual line from Jurassic World. Just finished a series rewatch and they’re all varying degrees of bad after the original, but good lord the Jurassic World movies are incompetently made garbage. Such a shame.

  7. Breaking news: Tommy Wiseau uploaded The Room to YouTube. If you haven't seen this classic before, now's your chance.
