  1. Another great episode! I’ve been thinking a lot about 1999 movies since it’s been 20 years (which is crazy) and it is definitely one of, if not, the best years for movies. You guys made me want to watch (and rewatch) all of yours picks.

Also, Adam, I’m a huge wrestling fan and I got way too excited when you said you were going to your first WWE show. It’s definitely an experience. It sounds like you will be going to see Raw, and it since that’s on live tv, I just wanted to warn you, there will be a lot of dead time for commercial breaks and possibly a lot of video packages. I’ve gone with friends before and it can be a bit of slog, but hopefully you get to see a really good show. When the show is good, wrestling shows are a super fun experience. Also, Batista just came back to start a feud with HHH, so hopefully he will be at your show. I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts on the show and what wrestlers you end up liking.

Oh and to the point about horror/wrestling fan crossover, being one of those people, I can’t quite put my finger on it. Might have to do with those are both things that people can get ridiculed for liking and told “grow up and move on from” it really tends to deepen the fandom and band those fans together. Also, those are forms of entertainment that are about making you believe things that are over the top and fantastical, and I think we appareciate the effort. For example, like making practical effects look great or in making a fake fight look as real as possible. But yeah, just my two cents.

Oh and I can’t wait for 1986 week next week!

  2. Oh man this episode was everything I love about FTM. Listening to you both talk about Blast from the Past and October Sky with the warmth and affection you did is exactly why I look forward to Wednesdays. I loved loved loved everything about this episode.

  4. Enjoying this one!

Re: Drop Dead Gorgeous - I'm curious if either of you have seen SMILE (1975)... it's got some big glaring problems but it definitely has sympathy for/identification with at least *some* of the pageant contestants. Or at least they seem a little more like people. But it's also arguably more of a movie about Bruce Dern as the RV salesman asked to judge the show.

  5. The ending of The Wood gets to me too especially now after just attending and being in the wedding of one of my closest friends. Also am I the only person who still likes Fight Club?

  7. Loved your BLOCKBUSTER story, Adam! And you both made so many great points about EYES WIDE SHUT - I liked it even more after this viewing (and I already loved it) too. EWS full podcast in the future? I'll make themed cookies?

  8. Lawrence Kasdan didn't mean anything to you? But he wrote Indiana Jones. The man meant wrote everything to you 😜

  9. Great podcast, cool dudes! Lots of thoughts.

Is Eyes Wide Shut really "scary sex"? It's been a while since I've seen it, but isn't the deal with the mask stuff being that the sex is cold and dispassionate, which is not really what Cruise's character is after, but he can't see that, because he too is "masked"?

As for Fight Club, I agree that parts of it certainly haven't aged well, but the message has been a mixed one since the start. If you can push the bigger-picture stuff aside and just watch it on a surface level, it entertains in a big over-the-top way.

And coming this fall to CBS: Everybody Loves Widows, starring Adam as Ray Romano, Patrick as Brad Garrett, and JB as Peter Boyle from Young Frankenstein.

  10. Oh good lord this episode was great. I sincerely hope you revisit this concept throughout the year. 99 had so many great movies and I started at Blockbuster in April 1999, so every single movie you named took me back. Your take on Blast From the Past delights me because I don't know anyone else who has the level of affection for that movie that I do. I have often wondered if it's some weird halo effect from the fallen stars of Fraser and Silverstone? Or that's it's a high concept romantic comedy?

And the fact that another former BBV has a Green Mile story (oh man, what a great BBV story that was, Adam) delights me. I know I wrote this in a comment ages ago, in one of Adam's BBV memory column, but I'm going to repeat it here because the Green Mile is in my favorite Blockbuster story, bar none. I was running tapes in the horror section, which was right next to Green Mile's spot on our New Release wall, and a mother and 10-12 year old son were browsing.

Mom stops at Green Mile, picks up the box and says, "What's this about?"

The kid says, "Oh, I know this one. It's about this guy, who didn't do it, and this other guy, who believes him."

And in a very sincere voice, mom replies, "I don't want to see that."

  11. I'm a middle/high school math teacher and October Sky is one of my go to end-of-the-year movies. My students have always never heard of it and they always respond to it. They hear me say the name, then brush it off all teenager-like, then 20 minutes later they're in rapt attention. Ive seen it at least 50 times and I still find the story fun and charming. Yet I never hear anyone talk about it. Thanks for making me feel justified in my movie choice!

  12. Sorry about the dumb grammar comment...I nearly immediately thought "take that back", but didn't delete the commment, as JB had already graciously responded to me.
I'll save it for my kids from here on out. Lord knows I have my hands full with that already!
