  1. Agreed completely on Adam's feelings on Kevin Smith. He may be flawed as a director (something I think he recognizes. He often says he would totally ruin directing a Marvel movie and would leave that up to people with more talent) but he seems like such a fun and likable guy, not to mention I enjoy his podcast stuff and the passion he so clearly has in nerding out on certain things. All this makes me want to support him in his own projects, in spite of them not always being the best.

  2. 8mm, The Wood, Virus, Brokedown Palace, The Thirteenth Floor, Pushing Tin, Idle Hands, Office Space & She's All That (cause it's awesome and can't be talked about enough). That's my nine suggestions. I think it's a good mix and I don't think any of the films were on either 9 from 99 podcasts. Love these podcasts, great work guys.

    1. Thank you for the suggestions! The Wood was on the first 9 for 99 (you don't have to wait :-) I love that movie. I wrote about 8MM and She's All That in my 20 Years Later column series you can find on the site if you'd like to check those out. I agree with you on She's All That. It was a real pleasure to revisit.

    2. I went back and read your 8MM and She's All That 20 years later takes and they are spot on. Good reads! I agree 8MM is an easy watch after re-watching it last Halloween. I wonder if stuff like the Saw series made it less messed up? And She's All That I feel like is my generation's Sixteen Candles. It's a great romantic comedy.

  4. Another great conversation!

Between your ‘99 coverage and the Best movie year ever book, i’ve been in such a mood to just devour ALL the 1999 movies haha.

Oh and your Fight Club discussion was especially great. I loved it as a teenager, but I feel like I have complicated feelings about it now. I liked Adam’s point about how it’s satire, but I’m still not quite there on seeing it that way myself (I feel like I’m more where Patrick seems to be on it) but I think it’s about time for a rewatch.

Oh and finally, Adam mentioning the minus man made me want to share this wild trailer for it that I just discovered the other day (thanks to the AV club). Adam, I feel like you could write a whole article breaking this down haha:

    1. Although currently often maligned as a naive young man's college bro movie, Fight club remains my favorite movie of all time. It's existentialism still resonates and I gain something new with every viewing.

It also puts all other twist movies to shame with the most well crafted twist ever put on film. Simultaneously keeps the viewer in the dark while every scene blatantly informs us of the truth.
In that way Fight club out plays shutter island, sixth sense, usual suspects, the prestige or anything else you could think of that has a twist.

  5. Just about to listen to it. Just wanted to say, I'm always especially pleased when Adam in on. No knock against the others, which are great, but Adam always has a certain enthusiasm about the movies he loved.

    1. Crocodile or alligator? The question everybody is wondering.

I love these episodes. However, while most episodes leave you with a "I want to see this movie", these episodes just leave you with dozens! Thank's for cluttering up my already impossibly cluttered watchlist.

  6. That's me who thinks Dan Hedeya is the best cinematic Nixon! It's such a great, sad, goofy performance.

  7. Adam Riske's Jean Claude Van Damme impersonation was spot on and it makes me envious.

  8. ah 1999
I was 17 and those were the movies that transformed me from a casual film fan to a serious one.
20 years and thousands of movies later, 2 films from 1999 still remain in my top 5 of all time.
