Announcing Junesploitation 2021!

 by Patrick Bromley

It's here at last!

In just a few days, we'll kick off our 9th annual Junesploitation, our month-long celebration of exploitation and genre films! If social media is any indication, there are a lot of you who are excited about it this year. That's great! It's why we put these events on.

You know the drill: For those of you new to Junesploitation, here's how it works: each day of the month has its own theme, and you're supposed to watch a movie that ties into that theme. How you interpret the connection is entirely up to you, which means if you have no interest in exploitation or genre movies that's ok and you can still join in! Just watch whatever you like that you feel fits with the day's theme. This month is supposed to be fun -- an excuse to watch movies every day and talk about them with one another. There are no "right" movies to watch. It's participating that gets you in the spirit, not watching a bunch of cheap, violent sleaze. That stuff is just a bonus.
If you do like those kinds of movies, though, or if you're willing to give them a shot, it's super easy to participate in Junesploitation thanks to streaming services. Netflix isn't a ton of help, but Amazon Prime Video has a deep library of titles and there are a number of streaming platforms devoted to just these kinds of movies: Shudder, Full Moon Streaming, Night Flight, and Brown Sugar are some of the big ones. Free services like Vudu, Tubi.TV, and Vidmark (on Roku) also have a number of titles you might want to check out this month. And while I rarely advocate watching movies on YouTube, there's a lot of cool and obscure stuff to be found there if you're willing to look. Stay tuned for our annual Junesploitation Primer for help on where to find some good titles, though by now most of you know where to look.

Here is this year's schedule, featuring a few new categories and a bunch of returning favorites:

Thanks to @ACasualListener and Michael Scott for suggesting some of this year's new categories, and as always thanks to Doug Schultz for his talent in designing the calendar every year.

Bring on Junesploitation!

    2. DC of "Commando" adds a few extra frames of gore to Arnie's bloody crusade. Not worth paying too much $$$ over the theatrical version, but if you can get it cheap... 😃👍

  2. I love Junesploitation so much! By my count, you could watch Cannonball Run II (1984) on TWELVE different days this year!

  7. So. Giddy.

question: Do y'all post a daily category for it where people can share in the comments which movies they did (or will do) for that days theme? I have a feeling im gonna come away from this month with a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge list of movie suggestions. Wooo hooo!!!!

PS: Suggestion....if you are doing daily comments, it would be great if people share the method of viewing as commenter Ross did above.

PSS: Team F This Movie and its fans ROCK. As i skim the list of genres/themes for Junesploitation all i can think is "you guys get me! this site is my wheelhouse!"

    1. This is a great list. I think you're in for a particular treat with Escape from NY, Carrie, Suspiria, History of Violence, Lifeforce, Earth Girls are Easy, From Dusk to Dawn, and Re-Animator. I'm jealous that you get to watch these FOR THE FIRST TIME.

    2. AMAZING list. well played.

First time for all entries!? whoo boy you're in for a good month. I could go on and on about most but ill focus on two:

Escape From NY was, is, and forever shall be an amazing perfect movie. Its epic. Also a top 10 final scene movie.

Black Dynamite: a movie ive suggested to friends above all other films ive seen in the past 15 years. One of the highest rankings i can give a film comes down to "rewatchability". this movie is endlessly rewatchable and hilarious. its brilliant

    3. In the words of Bruce Willis, "Welcome to the party, pal."

  9. Super excited for this as always! Also, advice wanted from my fellow F-heads: I’m not a big sword & sorcery guy, any suggestions for fun ones in that category would be extremely welcome. Thanks!

    2. Ha! That it is, I do like that one. Thanks!

    3. It's also fun to go back to previous Junesploitations for inspiration. For example, here's what people watched on Sword & Sorcery day last year.

  10. Another great Junesploitation list, Patrick. I am glad you found my suggestions helpful.

The picks for certain days are already firmly set, but there are still many decisions to be made. The free days are turning out to be the hardest to decide on. Almost all of the films will be first-time watches from my collection.

    '80s Action! - The Killer (1989)
Sword and Sorcery! - Ninja Wars (1982)
Scott Adkins! - Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
    Vigilantes! - The Punisher (1989)
Sci-Fi! - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

    1. I’m such a fan of the ‘78 Body Snatchers. So good!

      Delete
    2. 78 Body Snatchers scared the living cr@p out of me when i snuck watched it at 10 years old. The final scene is still one of the freakiest scenes ive EVER seen.

      Delete
    3. Body Snatchers '78 has been a Junesploitation candidate the past two years. This is the year to get around it to a watch. I am a fan of the original film, and the 1992 remake from Abel Ferrara was a pleasant surprise for Junesploitation 2019.

There a few of other days I have planned now.

'80s Comedy! - Private Resort (Another disc that has been sitting in my collection for a long time.)

      Jackie Chan! - First Strike

      Gangsters! - Triad Election (2007)
