  1. I'm surprised you guys didn't get anything out of Romulus and keep insisting it's superficial IP. The film does rehash its legacy, but it doesn't pass it off as original.

The teen pregnancy is her coming to grips with her creation- and it killing her. The Alien is a creation that kills its creator. The droids are creations that find agency and defy their creators. The "bitch" line is purposefully stepped on with a stutter- by the droid who tells dad jokes to remind the protagonist of her late father and their connection.

The whole film is grappling with being IP, and the AI deepfake being horrifying is incredibly prescient.

    1. Thank you for commenting, FTLT! Sorry I wasn't more into Romulus, and if I came off as dismissive on the show it's probably just because we only had a few minutes to talk about it. We go into greater depth on our podcast about the movie. I'm glad you liked it and thought it had something to say about being IP! I don't think I'm there yet, but that's ok!

    2. The podcast on Romulus is Patreon exclusive. Highly recommended.

    3. I don't listen expecting to agree with everything. I enjoy a variety of perspectives. This is the rare space where genre and especially horror are celebrated so I guess I just wanted to make the case here.

Fede pushes those buttons with intention. He's the guy who wrote Don't Breathe II and the Texas Chain Saw remake. The strong reactions keep overshadowing the substance of his provocations. They even overshadow his craft which is significant.

  2. Totally random observation, hope it's not obnoxious to put here, but Patrick and/or JB may dig it: I recently realized that the wonderfully hammy actor who plays Dr. Frankenstein on the standout Weird Science (the TV series) episode "Searching for Boris Karloff" (4x1), which isn't officially available for purchase/streaming but is nevertheless a quick search away on archive.org (in not-so-glorious 480x360p), is none other than Gerritt Graham, the star of the classic click The Phantom of the Paradise, and whom Star Trek fans will recognize as Quinn (the suicidal Q) from Voyager's: "Death Wish." I highly recommend the episode to fans of Universal Monster flicks, Graham, Weird Science the movie, and that particular Delta Quadrant yarn. Fun for everybody! :P

    1. Oh yeah, it's the same guy. I hadn't recognised him. I love Voyager. Going into it I had heard it was the "bad" one, but they couldn't have been more wrong.

    2. Gerritt Graham's the best. He's in Zemekis's Used Cars too.
