I really liked Expendables 2 when Van Damme was around and the movie was fun but it doesn't work as a movie at all. Schwarzenneger is just embarassing himself at this point - I'm rarely this uncomfortable watching an actor in a movie. Also, why are so many of the big action stars "heroes"? It would be much more fun if more were villians and we could have more one-on-one showdowns.
ReplyDeleteAs for The Master, I agree the photography (70MM Laura Dern - that's your marketing hook...I have a Laurening Dernsibility) and performances were superlative but it's like everyone is going out of there way to avoid saying the movie doesn't work. On a gut level, I know the movie feels empty and impenetrable. The characters are weird avatars that are near impossible to empathize with. I miss the Paul Thomas Anderson that cared about his characters (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love).
Laurening Dernsibility is probably the funniest thing I'll read all week.
DeleteI started rewatching the first Expendables again yesterday and determined that I think I like it better. This will not make me popular. But it felt sincere, and everyone acted in it like they had something to prove. The sequel is just a bunch of guys coasting and patting themselves on the back.
DeleteI'm not ready to say The Master doesn't work. I don't know that I'm ready to say much about it still. It's beautiful and it's VERY well acted and well made. But I'll agree with you that it doesn't immediately leap out at me as being a GREAT movie the way his others have. I know there are a lot of people who are going to call it one (and, again, maybe it is?) just because they so badly want it to be. I'm not looking forward to the conversation when it gets released. Or maybe I am?
But anyone can be Batman!
ReplyDeleteExtra credit for mentioning Scott Adkins. I hoped for a lot more, but it was still great to see him on the big screen.
ReplyDeleteIf only it was the '90s, Scott Adkins would be as big as Seagal and Van Damme were back in the day. He's the shit.
DeleteBecause of all the terrible pronunciation, you guys missed one of the best things about the movie: Jean Claude's character's name is Jean Vilain.
ReplyDeleteHa! I just found out he may return in the sequel - as his brother "Claude Vilain". God I hope this happens.
ReplyDeleteI found his name after we had recorded and couldn't believe that I had forgotten it. I hope he is in the sequel -- not because the movie NEEDS a sequel, but because a) he was the best thing in 2 and b) that's a pretty good joke. Thanks, Rik.
