Spring is here (in theory) and the temperature is going up (supposedly). Do your tastes change?
Here in Chicago, it's never going to get warmer. But the calendar claims it should be doing just that, so let's find out if there's a movie on your shelf that you reach for as the seasons (probably won't ever) change?
Well, Heath wrote about Field of Dreams in a recent columm, and I feel like Spring is the perfect time to break those baseball movies out: Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, The Pride of the Yankees, The Natural, Major League, etc.
ReplyDeleteAs we get into summer, some great choices that I will usually put on are Jaws (duh!), Dazed and Confused, National Lampoon's Vacation, American Graffiti, the Woodstock documentary, Stand By Me, Point Break and...uh...Grease? Friday the 13th? Rear Window? Do the Right Thing? I don't know, I'm just looking at "top summertime movies" lists now. I watch other kinds of movies during the warmer months, too, but those seem to be great choices for the season. Or, at least, summer-y choices?

ReplyDeleteThat's just good any time of year. Way to read a book!
DeleteI am just gonna say it the summer time classic Meatballs! I admit the movie is junk food but Bill Murray's scene stealing performance just gets me any time I see this movie.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is going to sound a little odd, BUT... Young Einstein. I know it's not a good movie, no really, I KNOW! I have watched it, nearly every year (there was a period during my 20s when my tape broke and it hadn't come out on dvd yet), at least once a year since it came out. I cannot explain this, but that movie just mean it's spring.
ReplyDeleteI have to smell a certain something in the air, but when I do smell that something, I have an irresistible urge to watch Yahoo Serious's one "good" film. I have Mr. Accident and Reckless Kelly, but beyond John Pinette those movies hold no interest for me. Come to that, I'm not sure they interest anyone else either. They both have some old school charm, but neither of them hit any kind of mark.
While I recognize that Young Einstein is not a good movie, it is something I enjoy. It's like Ma's cooking or that old quilt Grandma made or the Jackalope head you inherited from your Uncle Jake. These are just signs of joy and childhood.
I have also bought the soundtrack three times (on tape, CD and MP3) and can sing every note of every song at the drop of a hat. To be fair though, those are some awesome tunes. Movie bad, songs good.
I will also, sometimes, watch the Tim Burton Batman. That movie usually has to wait until it's actually summer.
These three don't make any sense other than they were all released in Spring but I often go back to Tommy Boy, White Men Can't Jump and Dave Chappelle's Block Party during March.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Warmer weather wasn't an event for us.
ReplyDelete;-)
Right, here in Orlando, FL, warm weather is the norm. It's just warmER.
Delete....with 99% humidity. :-p
DeleteFor some reason I always feel like watching Blast from the Past, which is actually really good and makes me wonder why I don't watch it more often.
ReplyDeleteI also always feel like watching Armageddon, which isn't that good and makes me wonder why I keep wanting to watch it.
I thought Spring Breakers would be good during spring. I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteRon Shelton's "Tin Cup" is my 'weather is warm outside' movie (and just saw it again on TV Guide network). Golf is my favorite sport to watch on TV, and it's this movie that turned me into a golf nut (that briefly tried and gave up on playing the sport when I realized I was no damn good at it) that associates sweaty Cheech Marin, playing golf with gardening tools and Renee Russo looking hot with warm weather. Between this, "Waterworld" and "Field of Dreams" watching Costner movies on TV is like the ratcheting up of the thermostat, at least for the East Coast.
