Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Feb. 14)

#fthismoviefest

Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Release date: Aug. 9, 1985

Man, remember when everyone did that Tequila dance? Or was that just me, alone, in my second grade class, as the "cool kids" surreptitiously put an old bird's nest in my backpack? And I could do the BEST Pee-wee laugh too. Not to mention a pretty great Bart Simpson (specifically, "°Ay caramba!"), but that's off topic. Then the ballz dropped, and my Rich Little days came to an end. This isn't the worst trailer in the world (the '80s were not a good time for movie advertising), but maybe I'm forgiving because they ended it with Large Marge's famous line, which is great and creepy and goofy and WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HER FACE!? I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WITH ALL OF YOU!

Commando
Release date: Oct. 4, 1985

Holy shit, this trailer. It plays like a Cracked parody of an '80s #HeavyAction film. And that's what makes it perfect. I haven't seen this movie (SHAME ON ME), but I do know a few of the iconic lines. I'm disappointed that the most famous quip didn't make the cut. Can I make the argument that nostalgia not only influences modern-day interpretations of "classic" "children's" movies, but also obnoxious, loud and unsophisticated action flicks? Absolutely. Will I do so here? Hells no. Because Allah loves wondrous varieties, and I'd be lying if I said this doesn't look like SO MUCH FUN. I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WITH ALL OF YOU!

Explorers
Release date: July 12, 1985

The other movie I've never seen (WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN), and I'm surprised that I haven't. If any movie from this year's fest lineup screams mid-1980s, it's this one. Granted, this is probably a VHS trailer (or part of some preview pack that used to play in video rental stores), but still -- that sappy Amblin score, the cheesy one-liners, the tween cast ... everything. I guess I haven't seen it because (as Patrick informed me) the movie has problems, and Mr. Joe Dante has publicly admitted that he's not completely happy with it. Huh. Not like that's stopped me from watching tons of other, lesser garbage. Should be really enjoyable to experience this with the #BabadookNation. I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WITH ALL OF YOU!

The Goonies
Release date: June 7, 1985

Really, what more is there to say that we haven't already said on The Goonies podcast, The Lost Boys podcast and the video for tomorrow's fest. TL;DR: Doug still loves it, whereas Patrick thinks it's trash. I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WITH ALL OF YOU!

Back to the Future
Release date: July 3, 1985

Best movie ever? Best movie ever. I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WITH ALL OF YOU!

  1. Oh you haven't seen Commando? Pay attention to the opening credit montage including the music, font, and font color. It may be the most 1985 thing ever. #watchintrailerzwithbabadook
