F This Movie! Turns 4 This Week

We smell like a monkey and we look like one, too.

FTM posted our first show, Avatar, on May 14, 2010. The world was a different time. Obama was still in his first term. Community was still on the air. Game of Thrones was not. "True Detective" was just a nickname my friends called me. Spider-Man hadn't been rebooted. Only two Transformers movie existed.

We're not doing anything huge to celebrate our fourth year as a thing on the internet, so use this space as a FREE FOR ALL to talk about whatever you want. Hannibal renewed? Roberto Orci directing the new Star Trek movie? All the presents you want to buy for FTM's B-day? GO NUTS!

  1. I just want to wish Patrick and crew a very happy birthday. You have helped to make the last four years a happier place to talk about film. I wish you nothing but the best.

Now let's talk about the possible future… F This Movie Live Chats on Youtube… Video Reviews… Round Table Video Discussions… An F This Movie Convention (in Patrick's basement)… :)

  2. 4 years is pretty damn impressive no matter which way you look at it. As a podcast, as a movie fan site, as a passion project on top of the rest of life, Well Done.
Happy Birthday you big four year old you! Keep up the great work.

  3. Happy birthday, F This Movie! 4 years is a great and impressive feat, but hopefully it's only the beginning. You are consistently churning out quality content, growing and evolving in the process. In addition, this is one of the most pleasant and respectful communities of people, both the F This Movie crew and the commenters, that I think exists on the internet, an extreme rarity. In light of that, your future is bright, young podcast!

Random ramblings: Today, I will be watching The Raid: Redemption for the first time. I have a feeling I'm in for a crazy, awesome ride!

  5. I'd like to say Happy Birthday, and also give a warning to Patrick: if you don't want to explode from pure rage, do NOT read Mike DeAngelo's article about The Lost World: Jurassic Park over at the AV Club.

    1. I read that piece. It would have made me a lot angrier had every commenter not called out the ridiculous premise of the piece. I felt less alone when I saw how many people refused to support that argument.

  6. Aw, Happy Birthday guys! The anniversary of the birth of this wonderful site is definitely worth celebrating and a big congratulations to Patrick and everybody involved - keep on growing and evolving!

I'll try not to be maudlin, but I can honestly say that this site has had a significant impact on my life. First and foremost in how I experience, think and talk about movies - I've always enjoyed movies but it's only been in the past nearly 3 years that I've been listening to the podcast and following the blog that I've come to really LOVE movies, and I have all of your infectious passion to thank for that. And secondly, I also really LOVE this site and this community of both direct contributors and my fellow F-Heads - coming here (and increasingly on Twitter) and fucking around with all you guys is one of the joys of my life - this is a special place and I'm happy and proud to be a part of it.

Thanks guys - keep up the great work!

  8. Happy birthday to my favorite podcast, my favorite site, and quite frankly my favorite people on the whole damn internet! No joke, F This Movie! has improved my life in countless ways and I'm proud to consider every F-Head out there a friend. This community is simply the best, and it's a true joy seeing it get bigger and better all the time. Mazel tov on four years, and I'm looking forward to five years and beyond.

    1. JP, I sincerely appreciate your insights and commentary. You also introduced me to the phrase, "and also because fuck you," which has found a special place in my heart.

  10. Congratulations on 4 years (Wow, can't believe it's been 4 years since I almost deleted the podcast feed when Patrick was singing the praises of Avatar [just kidding]). But seriously, I appreciate the site/podcast as you guys can sift through the detritus of the online movie community, and cater to people who love movies and don't care about the BS that goes along with being a movie fan these days.

    Keep up the great work!

  11. Thank you for the dedication and quality contributions everyone. I found the sight about a year ago and subsequently went through a good portion of the archives. Great to hear the evolution of the podcast over the years. My favorite highlights are the expression, "The full Spano," and Doug's anecdote during the Run Lola Run podcast. It's fine. It's fine.

  12. I came late to "F This Movie" (year and a half) when the front page of DVD Verdict announced someone had made a commentary track for "Sleepaway Camp." The rest was history and it's been my gateway to other podcasts (including one's in which Patrick is guest-starring, Jamie Farr-in-a-daytime-gameshow style) and been a favorite site to visit ever since. I'm currently walking three hours per day coming and going from/to work to lose weight (down 20 lbs. since Apr. 1), and nothing makes those boring commutes through deserted NYC sidewalks at 3:00AM pass faster than listening to old/new podcasts.

I guess this is my way of wishing Patrick & Co., from the bottom of my cold black heart: Happy Wednesday! :-)

  13. Happy Birthday, guys, and thanks for all the great listening! I really appreciate the many hours of good times. :)

Oh, and to answer the "best of Jessica Biel" question, she was entirely solid in the very good English manor screwball piece Easy Virtue.

  14. Congratulations! You have produced such brilliant content over these past four years you should all be really proud of it. Since I started listening last year this has been my favourite podcast by far! The website is also a favourite and the community that comes with it is truly the best. I think each person on F This Movie brings something special. You also have a great sense of humour and I have laughed extremely hard on many different occasions. You are an example to other sites and podcasts as you are lacking in pretentious bullshit and are never filled with hatred. You have a genuine passion and love for movies. Something I really enjoy is your championing underrated movies and I have discovered way too many movies to list that I now love thanks to your recommendations. I have been going through a really rough time over the past year and this site and podcast gives me something that makes me feel so much better. Thank you guys at F this movie and the community for all the conversation and also friendship. You are all very smart and some of the coolest people on the internet. Thank you guys at F this movie so much for all the great discussion and fantastic content. I hope for many more years of this fantastic site!

I thought randomly maybe we could try come up with some F This Movie Nicknames or alternative names. I think I started referring to Patrick as Rock-star Patrick on twitter at F This Movie Fest. Josh, Brett and I have also have referred to Erich as Great Leader on Twitter. I think The Godfather might make a cool name for J.B (as he brings with him such knowledge and everyone respects and admires him. Not because I think he is a mobster). Maybe Doug could be The Funniest and Most handsome, even though that's a bit long. So what do you guys think, any ideas?

I sort of thought this up as a little present I am not sure if it will work but here goes.

The F This Movie Rating System:

    ½ - It’s the worst
    * - It’s fine
    * ½ - It’s a mess
    ** ½ - It’s cherry 7up: I think I am going to like it, but I don’t.
    *** - It’s an interesting mess
    (An ambitious failure)
    *** ½ - I liked it, didn't love it
**** - It’s not a perfect movie, but I love it. / I love it. It is exactly what I want out of a (fill in genre) movie.
**** ½ - This movie is fucking awesome
    ***** - It’s a perfect movie

  17. I was a fan of the site and show long before I snuck in the service entrance. Still the best movie podcast around, and fourth or fifth most thoughtful writing about movies. Happy fourth birthday! Here's to four more! (We'll see how it goes from there.)

  18. Thanks to everyone for the very, very kind words. We love this community and we love talking movies with all of you, so thanks for making all of this possible. Let's celebrate our fourth birthday by watching Avatar on May 14.

  19. Happy B-day all! Glad I found this site a couple of years ago. You guys really do such an awesome job as I find that all of the writing is really well thought out and well done. I also love the respect that us who post here show each other. One of the reasons why this is my goto site is because I don't have to read trolling banter. Keep up the great work! Btw - A couple weeks away from Junesploitation!?
