What Do You Have Planned for #ScaryMovieMonth?

It's just four days away.

We're coming up on our FIFTH #ScaryMovieMonth at F This Movie!, and I know I'm not alone in expecting it to be our best yet. Just about anyone who spends any time on this site looks forward to this month all year long, and we do our best to make sure it's special and fun. Hopefully you all dig what we do, because we love talking about horror movies with everyone.

So besides beating your own personal record for the Scary Movie Challenge, what do you have planned for October? Do you have a stack of movies you've been saving up? What are they? Are you just going to wing it and watch whatever you feel like in the moment? Planning any marathons for yourself? Going anywhere special during the month? Do you have a prediction for how many entries we'll have in this year's SMC? Be sure to spread the word about it everywhere you can!

THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER. Let's get ourselves all excited by talking about the fun we're going to have.

  1. Love the Nightbreed Avatar. Mine has not turned up yet and the worst thing is if it does turn up in oct I cant watch it till November

    Heres why?

Im going for a 80s VHS Movie Massacre. I used to go to film fairs for years and collect all the Pre Cert Uncut 80s Horror movies that got caught up in the whole Video Nasties debacle. I still have them all today. I like the Artwork of Old VHS tapes. Some artworks are still quite shocking now. I still have a couple of Video players in good working order.

So im Watching all VHS 80s horrors movies on the original video tapes as I would of watched them in the 80s. Its gonna be tough going but it's gonna be fun.

  2. I have a simple plan, like a lot of people here I own way too many DVDs and Blu Ray discs. And because there are a lot of them that were box sets of 150 movies for $20 I have a lot I haven't watched. So that's what I'm going to try and do, watch them, watch them all. I have allowed myself some wiggle room though. I've seen Evil Dead 2 more times that Citizen Kane, but I haven't watched the Blu Ray since I bought it for $5 a few months ago, so that's fair game. This will result in some horrible movies, some good movies, and some old favorites that should look like new again.

There is also the Hellraiser marathon we were talking about before, and I'm going to buy those discs on payday. And I also have to buy The Thing, because while I've seen the last half hour like 5 times, I've never seen the whole movie. I mean, while I'm at Amazon, right?

I'm also toying with the idea of a Massacre Home Game, but haven't found anyone else willing to sit through 24 hours of horror movies yet.

  3. Oohh Hellraiser marathon. Thats gonna be tough. Good luck

  4. I'm still frantically making plans at zero hour, unfortunately, but that's usually how I roll with these kinds of things. I know I'm either going to start or end (maybe both) with Trck 'r Treat. I think I'm going to make that a tradition. I saw Re-Animator for the first time ever earlier this year, and it was great, so I may rewatch that. Finally, I know I am going to seek out Dead and Buried and see what that's all about, since it was championed as fun and underrated on a previous Massacre podcast. Speaking of Massacre, I may marathon all the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies to prepare for what I assume is coming later in the month. Hooray, SMM!

    1. I saw Dead & Buried for the first time last Scary Movie Month and it was easily my favorite of the month. Such a fun movie! http://mushniksflorist.blogspot.com/2013/10/scary-movie-month-day-19.html?m=1

    2. Nice! Looking forward to it!

On another note, I just remembered I want to watch Dead Alive for the first time, too, so that's on my list as well.

      Delete
    3. Holy crap John. Your in for a treat. The best scene ever with a lawn mower. That movie has the best sense of humour

      Delete
    4. Dead alive is insane fun. I just watched it for the first time myself.

      Delete
    5. Great! Haha, lawn mower, I'll remember to look out for that then I watch it. I think my theme for this year is going to be "fun horror movies."

      Delete
    6. You can think of a great 7 word lawnmower review

  5. I went on a bit of a blind-buying binge last week and bought a stack of blu-rays of horror movies I've never seen (The Beast Within, TerrorVision, The Video Dead, Final Exam, the director's cut of Nightbreed) and a few that I've seen but it's been so long that I literally remember nothing (the Maniac Cop trilogy, Deadly Blessing) so my goal is to use those along with others in my collection to stick only to movies I've never seen or have very little recollection of.

Also, I'm kicking off the month by watching the producer's cut of Halloween 6 on 10/1 which has me crazy-excited (an odd feeling, as I loathe the theatrical cut and I can't imagine any alternate cut that could fix it much). Last year I did about half new-to-me movies and half familiar standbys. This year, I'm challenging myself to go with only new-to-me (or might as well be new-to-me) stuff, and hoping to stick to last year's rhythm of a movie a day. Work & family may make that a wee bit more difficult this year, but I'm super-pumped for it.

    1. I don't want to over-hype it, but I think The Video Dead is glorious. It knows exactly what it is, and what it is is unlike anything else...if you follow me.

      Delete
    2. Me too. Video dead is a crazy unique film. Love it

      Delete
    3. Wait, I might be getting TerrorVision and Video Dead mixed up. Either way, if you bought the Scream Factory double feature, you're in for a treat. They're both pretty unconventional.

      Delete
    4. I did get the double feature and I've never seen either one so I'm excited! It's so great that for every movie that I love that gets the Scream Factory treatment they also put out a handful of movies I missed. I find they earn the blind-buy even if the movies aren't great. They just put so much love into what they do I can't help but get excited.

      Delete
    5. Easy mix up to make. I still like the video dead. But Terror vision is another kettle of fish totally. Terrorvision is a much better film I would say out the two. Its really is good fun

      Delete
    6. I find TerrorVision to be a lot of silly fun. I'm less enamored with The Video Dead.

  6. skewing heavily italian/hammer/universal this time. filling in gaps of stuff i for whatever reason havent seen yet. first bava (maybe more if i like him)/revisiting argento and fulci, curse of frankenstein/scream of fear/crescendo, and finally seeing both 1931 versions of dracula and the frank/bride combo.

classes will be pretty nuts this fall so am guessing i wont be able to fit as much in as i would prefer, but since this is my first scary movie month will probably end up sacrificing homework for the sake of participating.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm going to spend a week watching classic horror movies, then I'm going to spend a week trying to watch stuff I haven't seen and the other weeks I might just program theme days. So one day ill just do zombie movies and one day ill do universal movies or scary alien movies. I also want to have franchise days where ill watch all the Friday the 13ths or nightmare on elm streets or saws. The local art house is showing a few horror movies on the big screen so ill get to see Texas chainsaw massacre and fright night in a theater which I've never done so that will be fun. Couple movies that I'm hoping to catch up with that I haven't seen, tales from the crypt presents demon knight, the purge anarchy, exorcist 3, spiderbaby, the invisible man, lifeforce and there's a few Friday the 13ths I've never seen as well. I'm incredibly excited to participate this year, it's my first scary movie month and I'm ready to kick some major ass!

    1. Your in for a real treat with Demon Knight Travis. Billy Zane on top form. Its a load of fun

      Delete
    2. Oh yeah, Demon Knight is fantastic all the way through. Definitely in for a treat.

I won't spoil anything, but keep in mind that Exorcist III was taken away from William Peter Blatty and the end is now a mess because of it. It's still a wonderful, meditative, and character-driven film. It caught me at just the right age as a kid. Even thinking about some of the scenes in that movie can creep me out.

      Delete
    3. Oh that's right i totally forgot the author directed exorcist 3. Yea i heard it's kind of an underrated one so I'm curious to watch it and apparently there's a pretty good jump scare somewhere in the movie. I also got the original exorcist on bluray so ill be spinning that as well. I may have gotten a tad impatient and popped in a little bit of demon knight on Saturday night... And it's bad ass! Loving the hell out of it so far, it has some interesting twists with some deaths I didn't see coming and I never thought I'd say this but Billy Zane is the shit! I will start it over in a few days and watch the whole thing lol

  8. Doing Chaybee--fest as I mentioned, gonna be a sort of spotlight on both recent and old indie or smaller films that get overlooked.

I'm also going to my first ever horror film festival called spooky movie festival. It's at the AFI in MD. I have tickets to three films back to back to back. "A girl walks home alone at night", "Suburban Gothic" with a directors q&a (he's from my neck of the woods) and "The Babadook". Should be a blast.

As always, I'm going to try and watch films I've never seen. There's a ton of new independent films being released during Oct. So much of my watching will involve that. And of course, the shining and our new tradition of watching Trick r treat.

  9. As in Junesploitation I'm trying to go with a movie a day and all "new to me". Can't wait to read everyone's posts! #FHeadsAssemble

  12. It's going to be Scary Movie Month of the Franchise for me - some of them new to me - some of them just new on blu-ray for me - looking to tackle Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Psycho, Amityville Horror, Evil Dead and The Final Destination. Will mix in a few new singles and Netflix recommendations as well - can't believe it's almost here already!!!

    1. Shit yeah. That's awesome. Some great choices. I have a funny feeling the Amityville movies might be great fun. In my mind it sounds great. But in reality I have no idea. I just did all the elm streets. It starts good and ends good is all im gonna say. Look out for gay subtext in 2. Its hillareous. Although whipping a naked mans bare arse is not really subtext is it? ;)

      Delete
    2. Heheh - I've actually watched all of the Elm Streets before but this is my first time on blu-ray. My 7-word review for 2 last time was "Not that there's anything wrong with that..." Those and a few Ft13's will be repeat SMM picks - hope it's not too hard coming up with new reviews!

The Amityville's will be new to me - I haven't heard many good things but I picked up the Scream Factory trilogy on blu-ray for $3 awhile back so worth a shot!

      Delete
    3. One of my DVD box sets I have set aside is the Nightmare on Elm Street one so I'm planning to watch them all! I've seen the first one so many times but I've never seen the others, bring it on!

      Delete
    4. There's really only a couple of the sequels I'd reasonably call "good" but I have fun with all of them - hope you do too!

      Delete
  13. Excellent. I like your review for Nightmare 2. You've gotta know the film to get the joke. im gonna go for

"Everyones welcome. It's Freddys cumming out party"

Im getting excited already. Its my first scary movie month.
You cant turn down Amityville for $3 if im right I think there are 11 altogether in the series. That would be a good marathon

    3. I might have to invoke/invent the Scream Factory Rule and say the only ones that really count are the ones they released. Like Patrick I'm already starting to worry that SMM will be over soon, so I don't want to waste it on a bunch of crap - happy for anyone to chime in and tell me if any of those beyond 3 are worth watching!

    4. Fair point Sol. But my OCD and also PBS wont let me do that. If I start them I gotta watch um all. I possibly need to see someone about this

  14. Looking forward to my first Scary Movie Challenge. Thought of setting a personal goal, but then it becomes too much like work. I'll just do what comes naturally.

I still have two movies left to watch on the Universal Monsters Blu-ray Collection, The Wolf Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon, so those are a given. I also have unwatched Blu-rays of Don't Look Now, Triangle, Berberian Sound Studio and Grabbers on my shelf.

A friend recommended The Conjuring and Melissa sold me on Pontypool on her column, so those are possibilities. I'll also watch a Finnish horror movie called Sauna and another one called Kuutamosonaatti (The Moonlight Sonata) if I can get my hands on it somehow. Bet you haven't had any Finnish movies on SMC before!

And I have never seen any of the movies I mentioned before. Gonna be a fun month.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kuutamosonaatti - 1937 or 1988 version? I've seen a few - Dark Floors, Rare Exports (overrated but I still liked it) and Sauna is decent (borderline Horror film). I don't know if there are that many that are accessible.

I love that cats are going DEEP for SMM!!!

      Delete
    2. It's from 1988. The 1937 movie with that name is neither Finnish nor horror.

And if you're referring to me, watching Finnish movies is not going deep for me, since I live in Finland.

      Delete
    3. Awesome, thanks Miiko. I never of heard of that movie so wanted to make sure I try and track down the right one.

I just meant in general about people getting into SMM this year. This is my 3rd year doing it and I echo Patrick's earlier comment and think it's great to see so many new names!

      Delete
    4. After a little digging I found that Kuutamosonaatti has never been released on DVD or Blu-ray. It can be found in full on YouTube though, but predictably in pretty bad quality.

    5. Thank you, sir! If there are other films from Finland that are accessible that you would recommend, please let us know!

  15. I've followed the site and the podcast for about a year and a half, but last October I was in the middle of a move, so this will be the first Scary Movie Month my wife and I participate in. Our plans aren't too original, we're mostly sticking with the major franchises - Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Evil Dead, but we're reserving the right to skip the obvious turds - Nightmare 5 and Jason Takes Manhattan, for example. Just want to keep it fun and try not to make it feel like work.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And I forgot, we're planning on culminating on halloween with Trick r Treat and probably a second viewing of Phantasm and Nightmare on Elm Street, if I can stay awake and not pass out due to a Yummy Mummy induced sugar coma.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm planning on a mix of about 65% new stuff with the rest being tried and true favorites (The Frankenstein movies, Nightmare on Elm Street, Psycho, Alien). I also like to keep things mostly free form in order to capitalize on whichever mood I'm in, but I will be holding Witch Week about halfway through the month. Seven days of as much witchy goodness as I can fit in; I can't wait! I'm so excited to read everybody's reviews and discovering new recommendations.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just want to say how excited I am to see so many new names and voices saying they're joining us for the first time ever this year. You all will not be disappointed. There's a reason we all love this month so much. Thanks for being with us!

  19. Another first timer here, discovered the podcast after moving to Ecuador. I needed some distraction for 6+ hour long drives. Fthismovie serves the purpose perfectly.

I'm going to let my mood pick the movies, will try to track down some south american horror to mix things up. keep up the great work!

  20. My fiance and I do a fun Halloween weekend thing every year now. Though celebrating Halloween in Australia is socially frowned upon here as some sort of American cultural invasion my argument against the local wowsers is Australias national holidays are nothing if not extremely boring. For us Halloween is a bit of fun and nothing more sinister than that. So if you don't like that then it's your loss and leave us alone. In previous years we pick out all our horror movies we have on DVD/Blu Ray and try and get through as many on Halloween weekend as possible. This year, inspired by F This Movie we are going to watch horror movies every weekend of October with our favorite ones reserved for Halloween itself. I'd love to be able to watch a scary movie every night but work commitments will prevent this. Also some of my favorite horrors from the 80's are finally getting a release on Blu-Ray here in October so I will be eagerly tracking them down (Fright Night, Christine etc.). As I get older I have been wanting to revisit older classic movies so the Universal Monsters Blu Ray set is looking very enticing as well. Movies that MUST be watched in our household during October are:
Poltergeist: Horror comfort food for me.
An American Werewolf in London: I can recite this word for word, I don't so as to avoid being elbowed. And I still retain my childhood crush for Jenny Agutter, but I keep that to myself to also avoid being elbowed.
A Nightmare on Elm St: The first, we have the whole set, but we only watch the others if we have run out of options.
The Thing(s): Yes, we even watch the 2011 prequel first, they work surprisingly well together.
Razorback: One of the most batshit insane movies to come out of Australia, two words: Pig Jaws...
Pet Semetary: I've recently bought this on Blu Ray and can't wait to see my fiance's reaction to Zelda. Will probably be worse than Patrick's.
    Evil Dead 1 + 2, a staple.
Paranormal Activity: The "unseen horror" premise terrifies my fiance, and we have a rule that you must watch at least a couple of movies that genuinely scare you.
Fright Night, for many years this movie was sooo hard to find down here and I need to make up for lost time.
Ed Wood: This will be the last one since my fiance doesn't like watching real scary stuff right before going to bed. So it will be used as a "Palette Cleanser" of sorts. Doesn't hurt that it's a damn fine movie... What the hell happened to Tim Burton?
These plus all other horror options we own will make for a pretty full October. I am the cook of the house so we make a semi-traditional American food weekend of it too, Pumpkin Pie is one I always make. I research traditional American recipes and try to make something different every year. The rest is fast food type stuff like Hot Dogs (Chicago style is my favorite), Buffalo Wings,Burgers and of course loads of sugar. I also go all out and put my artistic talents to good use by festooning the house in Halloween themed decorations. I also have a few (harmless) prank scares planned as well but they will depend on how much I want to end up being single by November. I hope they go over in the spirit that is intended.
Sorry for the long winded post but this is my first one so hopefully they be more to the point in the future. I'm just excited for the month coming up and am also looking forward to any Halloween treats F This Movie has in store.
Keep up the excellent work everybody.

  21. It's funny, I seem to only comment in the message boards during October. This is my 3rd scary movie month and I'm incredibly excited. I'm pretty organized this year with about 50 movies I'll be watching. Mostly new stuff but a few favourites or things I haven't watched in a few years. Can wait to start reviewing everything on the site! Let me know if anyone wants to see my list!

  23. This is my first scary movie month and I can't wait! I've been a long horror fan since I can remember, so when I heard about SMM I was excited to join in the fun. As far as my plans I think I'm going to wing it for the most part. I'll mix in some old and new movies, as well as some favorites like Evil Dead and TCM. There are a few movies like The Wicker Man (original), Psycho 2, and now after reading some comments The Video Dead that I've never seen that I plan on watching. Looking forward to reading everyone's posts!

  24. Welcome to the party Mike. If you reread our comments its Terror vision that Heath was thinking of. The Video Dead has some charms but Terror vision is the film to watch. But then again its SMM watch um both :)

  25. I have a list of about 30 mainstream horror movies I havent seen, but I probably will only watch a few from the list. I like the idea of winging it and throwing something on the tele and being surprised. I love Hammer and cheese stuff from the 50s so I will watch as many of those as I can (drugged) as I recover from sinus surgery in the middle of the month.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Can not wait. What number are we trying to get to this year?

    ReplyDelete
  27. My main goal is to watch all of the Halloween boxed set. I'm also using the book Hidden Horror as a helpful tool. I want to see as many new (to me) horror movies as I can. Some of those movies are Phantasm, Politergeist, Possession, The Blob, and Leprechuan. If I have enough time, I want to tackle the Friday 13th series again. I've only seen the original, Freddy vs. Jason, and the remake. I wasn't a big fan of those movies. Maybe Jason isn't for me. I'll find out this month. I have another list for streaming titles. Most of these came out recently such as The Sacrament, Resolution, American Mary, and Stage Fright. And I'm going to make time for The Woman and The Woman in Black. The discussions on previous podcasts have intrigued me. There's so many movies. Maybe I'll just stay inside for all of October. I can't wait.

  28. Mixing it up this year and picking stuff at random from DVR, library, Netflix streaming and personal collection. I'm also programming my own 24 hr marathon instead of going to the Music Box of Horrors, but going to the Massacre.

    1. Ive never tried a 24 movie thing. I literally don't think I could stay awake. After 3 or 4 movies i really start to struggle. I would just have to fill up on stay awake tablets as they do in the Elm st movies. And Redbull.

  30. With an infant in the home this year, I'm not making too many plans past watching my existing library of horror films - Universal Monsters, Carpenter, etc. - since I don't have to worry about pausing or missing anything. But if time allows, there are two things I'd like to tackle this year.

First, The Invisible Man sequels are the only corner of classic Universal Monsters I haven't explored. There are still a few of the stand-alone movies for next year, but these will be the last of the classic Universal Monster films to cross off my list. Sort of bittersweet, actually.

Second, I need to finally get to know the 80s monster movies. As of earlier this week, I'd only seen two Nightmare on Elm Streets, one Halloween, and zero Friday the 13th movies. I started scary movie month early tonight with Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy's Revenge. I'm going to continue through the Nightmares and move on to Friday the 13th.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This will be my first year, too. Really looking forward to it. For the most part, my wife and I are just going to wing it (though I've secretly got some movies in mind: I've yet to see The Descent, so there's that, and I'm itching to introduce my wife to The Howling).

The only thing I know we're doing is attending the Rifftrax Live presentation of Anaconda on Oct. 30. I'm counting that as the day's horror movie. Hey, Anaconda's pretty scary, right. Look at Jon Voit. Terrifying.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'll be there too, adamarmour. The "Godzilla" Rifftrax Live in August was brutally bad, but I gotta believe cheesy CGI anaconda plus Jon Voight plus J-Lo ass equals riffing/Halloween gold. And of course it counts for SMM. ;-P

  32. This year I want to tie my Scary Movie Month to the backlog of podcast episodes of the three or four I listen to semi-regularly (Projection Booth, Badasses Boobs and Body Count, F This Movie, Killer POV and How Did This Get Made) about horror movies I haven't seen. If there's a horror movie that's either streaming on Amazon Prime or Netflix Instant or I have access to physical media that has a podcast I haven't heard (like, for example, Patrick's interview with the writer/director of "Contagious," which is currently streaming on Netflix Instant) that's the one I want to prioritize in October. That way I don't only get the seven-word review but also a nice new-to-me podcast to listen to as I spend four hours per day walking to/from work.

The BBandBC podcast, in particular, has a bunch of podcasts about Mario Bava movies that are currently streaming on both Amazon Prime and Netflix. I'm not gonna do only horror movies in October though, that's Patrick's OCD thing. I'm gonna mix it up with other stuff to keep from going insane and hating Scary Movie Month a few days into it, like it happens to many of us. :-)

  33. What Do You Have Planned for #ScaryMovieMonth is a good header.

But What do you have planned for us is what I'm wondering?

    Ps,
I dont want to know the answer. I want the surprises but I am wondering whats in store with eager anticipation

  34. I started a week early and I've already burned through Nightmare 3, 5, Freddys Dead, Sleepaway Camp, Phantasm, The House of the Devil, Jason Goes to Hell, Ginger Snaps, and The Battery. All of those first viewings. This week I'm gonna do The Descent Part 2 and Phantasm 2, but I'm stumped after that. Thankfully I live near a Hastings, so ill probably be digging through their horror rentals everyday for the next month.

  35. Hey Drew. Your off with a good start. Ps if you dont want to spend loads of money renting and dont have netflix. youtube has a massive selection. If you search for "full movie horror" you will be surprised how many there are. You could spend a month watching movies there alone for free.

  36. This is my first Scary Movie Month since beginning to work my way through the F this Movie podcasts (and first time commenting on the site), and I am getting some great ideas from comments above. I had wanted to fly to Chicago (from Washington state) for the Massacre, but will have to wait till I graduate and am gainfully employed as an English teacher next year (knock on wood). Next best is doing as many weekend marathons on my own and with friends as possible.

I'm going to try and work through the areas of horror I am less familiar with, which includes Universal, Hammer, Italian, et al. I also want to see all the stuff I haven't by auteurs I like. Since I'm dual citizen and half Canuck, I will do my part to support the NFB of Canada and start with Cronenberg, whose "Dead Ringers" was maybe the most unsettling film experience I had as a teen (later surpassed by "Hall Pass").

  37. I'm actually trying to track down as many family friendly "horror" movies as possible. My oldest son is seven and I want to have him participate as much as I can. We have some ideas like The Birds, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Forbidden Planet, The Witches.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    1. This is a great question! Because sometimes comments/old posts can get buried, I'm going to make this the Weekend Weigh-in on Saturday. You'll get more suggestions than you know what to do with!

    2. That would be great. Maybe you could have them include appropriate age ranges (everyone, bigger kids, young teens). Thanks for looking out for me PB.

    3. Sometimes with kids mixed themes (like horror/comedy) can work. As Patrick pointed out on the podcast a film The Mummy is a good entry level horror although your son may be a bit too young for it. Some of the Disney Halloween themed animations like Sleepy Hollow (the headless horseman) may go over well. Horror themes mixed with some comedy tend to help smooth over potentially traumatic scenes in a movie but caution is still needed. Truly effective horror/comedies do tend to be the best of both worlds after all. If the age of a film is not a problem for your son then I think you're on the right track with your ideas. The Abbot and Costello classic horror crossovers may work a treat.
Take it from someone who was allowed to watch An American Werewolf in London and John Carpenter's The Thing on the same dark night at the tender age of nine in 84/85. As long as you don't do anything that irresponsible you and your son will be fine ( though I'm sure you won't ). How I managed to become a fully functioning human being after the years of trauma that caused amazes even me.
