It's pretty well known around here that I have little interest in talking about the Oscars, but I also recognize that many people are interested in them and enjoy making their own predictions. If nothing else, this is the one weekend a year when everyone is talking about movies, which is nice.
So who are your picks to win Sunday night? You've read Adam Riske's. Are the people/movies you want to win the same ones you think will win? And if you're not happy with the nominations, who would you like to have seen accepting an award this year? Besides John Wick, of course. The man, not the movie.

Apparently, in 1935, a write-in candidate won for Best Cinematography. I think they made it such that that can't happen anymore, but one can always hold out hope. #JakeGyllenhaal

ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I'm hoping for Desplat for Best Score (either one) and Princess Kaguya for Best Animated.
My predicted winner this year: Neil Patrick Harris. This year, I have a Super Bowl frame of mind to watching the Oscars, ie: watch for the commercials and half-time show. In this case, that means watch for the host. I think NPH should be pretty fun.

DeleteI won't be watching them this year either, primarily since our boy Jake didn't get the nomination he so richly deserved. I'm also tired of watching these shows where nothing interesting happens, and all they do is pat themselves on the back for four hours (I'm thinking of you SNL 40th Anniversary).
ReplyDeleteI used to watch the Oscar's with my family, which made for a nice gathering; but I was really the only one who watched most of the nominations. These days it just doesn't hold enough interest for me to watch. I'd rather watch The Walking Dead, and find a movie worth watching in its stead. Maybe I'll watch Enemy again, another performance probably better than a few of this years nominees.
Since high school, my best friend and I have watched the Oscars together. Even though I moved to FL and she's still in NY, for almost 20 years we'd call each other during every commercial break, though over the past few years that's morphed into just texting each other throughout the show. Also over the past few years, that's become my only reason to watch the show.
ReplyDeleteI have no predictions, because as Patrick has said the awards themselves have become so meaningless that there's no point. The only part of the show I'm truly interested in, sadly, is to see what sort of tribute they'll have to Robin Williams.
I haven't explored it deeply, but a few thoughts off the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteLego Movie should have won best animated feature, but How To Train Your Dragon 2 probably will.
Supporting Actress seems like a wash, so they'll probably throw it to Arquette because she did it for 12 years and had the best monologue in Boyhood.
Supporting Actor should be Norton or J.K. Simmons, but they might throw it to Duvall as one of those career awards.
Best Actress has some good ones. Idk, probably either Moore or Witherspoon. Rosamund Pike was good, but apparently the academy didn't care for her movie that much.
Best Actor is lacking a Gyllenhaal nomination, as we all know. I think it's just going to be either Keaton or Redmayne. Keaton gives a big time actor's performance, and Redmayne gives a big time Academy's performance.
Linklater gets best director for Boyhood, because they'll feel bad for not giving it best picture. It really should go to Inarritu or Wes Anderson. Don't get me wrong, I like Boyhood more than those two movies, but they had stronger direction in my opinion.
Best Picture goes to either Birdman or Selma. It's possible American Sniper could weasel its way in there, but I don't think the Academy is scared of angry conservatives so I doubt it. However, the Academy is scared of looking racist, so they might give it to Selma because they now realize they snubbed out some fantastic actors and other awards that could have gone to this fantastic movie. But I think Birdman is the movie they all really want to pick.
Side note: I'm not watching the show either, because the nominations this year were so ridiculous. I would love to wake up Monday, though, and hear that Citizenfour won best documentary. It was in my top ten of last year.
And the award, for hottest piece of ass that will probably kill you in your sleep but you don't care because at least that means you will have slept with him or her goes to... Dan "the Man" Stevens in The Guest!

And finally, this years "Into the Wild" award is an Oscar first! The winners are a tie between... Into the Woods and Wild! Congratulations!
Make sure to pick up your complementary sniper rifles as you leave the auditorium!
Oh yeah, I forgot one. The best performance in a walrus costume goes to... Steve Carell in Foxcatcher!

After watching last night a yet-to-be-released-in-the-US documentary on the big screen and hanging out with my new best friend, Catherine Mary Stuart (yeah, right!), I've decided there's just not enough time left in my life to enjoy Cannon movies. "Sahara" and "10 to Midnight" over "Boyhood" and "Birdman" 4evah! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAfter watching "Lost Soul" last night - Val Kilmer and Brando for "best douche bag and supporting douche bag egomaniac". Hollywood should have that award although there would be too many nominees.
ReplyDeleteIt's a tough call. I'm still coming off a Birdman high ever since I saw it months ago and would like at least Keaton to get a win. Boyhood will get best picture and/or best director. Selma probably won't win anything. JK Simmons will get some love for Whiplash but I don't think it'll win more than that. And the others are just nominee names to toss around.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see Linklater win for best picture or director, but I'm not sure that is going to happen. Won't be watching because I do not enjoy the award show format; would rather watch four hours of DVD special features about the nominees/winners, or two movies.
ReplyDeleteI ended up watching the ABC online feed, which was different from the TV broadcast. It was like having a backstage pass with views of the stage, crowd, photographers' row, and the press room. Much more personal and interesting seeing the winners relaxed and off the main stage. Tried keeping up with Twitter, too, but meh. So, do I need to see Birdman (or as Doug calls it, Birdmun)?
