Free for All!

It's all you!

There's so much to talk about this weekend, whether it's all the news out of San Diego Comic Con (Mike is there right now! Hi Mike!) or...um...wait, is that all anyone is talking about?

You don't have to! Talk about anything you want!

    1. That trailer looks incredible. I laughed harder at that minute and a half or whatever it is then I have at half of the 90 minute comedies I've watched this year.

    2. Me too Tim, I must of watched it a dozen times, I can't wait, it looks like fun, You knew they we're Jewish Right? :)

  2. I'm still gonna go back to #Junesploitation for a bit and say thanks to Patrick, all the FTM contributors and my fellow F-heads for making it one hell of a fun month.

I saw so many great, interesting and/or weird movies that I would never have gotten around to seeing if it weren't for FTM and #Junesploitation. The clear highlights include Starcrash, Ninja III: The Domination, Secret Agent 00 Soul, Lady Terminator and the Sleepaway Camp commentary.

And since no one asked, I made a list of all the films I saw.

    1. Nice list! Well done sir. Junesploitation was awesome. I went to work at a summer camp for the last week, so I missed the end but all I was there for was the bomb.

    2. I'm with you Mikko, it felt a little weird this year with no "Thanksploitation" to wrap it all up. I saw some of the best stuff ever this time with Karate Cops being the full on number 1. Recoil, The Taking of Beverly Hills, Amok Train, Cannibal Campout and The Abomination were the highlights. Burying the Ex and Scorpion were the biggest letdowns. Trapped in the Closet was something to behold. I hated it, but I loved experiencing it!

I had a great time with you all and can't wait to do it again!

Also, since this is a free for all, might I suggest that for Scary Movie Month F This Movie finds a way to structure the comments differently. I hate being an "idea guy" and maybe I'm in the minority on this, but keeping the comments in a single thread gets exhausting by day 2 when reading through them. Would it be possible to separate them for each day year? That's all I'm suggesting.

    3. I think that's a really good call, Chaybee. Especially with participation spiking so high, it can be daunting navigating through all those seven word reviews.

      Delete
    4. I would be willing to give that a shot. It's frustrating that there's not option to filter comments by 'newest.' I know Disqus has that feature.

Sorry about not writing a 'Thanksploitation' piece this year. My thought was that no one really cared about reading it and was tired of hearing me rattle on about Junesploitation. I'm thrilled to hear people saw so many cool movies. My highlight might have been Tombs of the Blind Dead, which I saw on Day One. Downhill after that.

    5. Thanks for considering separate days for the SMM comments, Patrick! And there's no chance I was tired of hearing about Junesploitation. Shit, I finally watched my 80's horror one last night that my VCR ate!

  3. I saw the tweet that goes along with that pic above and all I can say is...holy shit, LCJ. Even an 11-year-old (or whatever the hell you are) should know better than to attempt a "joke" like that. Yikes.

Also, that #RIPTheDissolve hashtag makes me super sad. That was a terrific site, full of smart and informative writers doing tremendous work. It was a daily (or at least near-daily) visit for me and I'm sad to see it go, especially so suddenly. It has made me wonder, though: other than here (obviously) what other sites do you guys visit on a daily(ish) basis?

    1. I used to check The Dissolve regularly. I visit Birth Movies Death and Film Drunk (because I like Vince Mancini's writing). Sometimes AV Club, but they're all over the place since losing their core staff. About once a week I check in on F This Movie!.

      Delete
    2. So what's with the pic? I recognize Chiwetel Ejiofor but have no idea who that kid is, what LCJ means or what's going on. Apparently there's a joke of some kind involved? Could someone illuminate me please?

      Delete
    3. LCJ is Lights, Camera, Jackson, a kid who thinks he's in thirties who reviews movies on YouTube (and of whom Adam Riske does a killer impression). He tweeted that pic along with a "joke" that was something along the lines of telling Ejiofor on his birthday not to be a slave to his diet and have cake. Yuuuuuuuuck.

      Delete
    4. Actually I was ok not knowing. Thanks anyway JP.

    5. That kid is just awful. I looked him up after I hearing something about him in one of your podcasts. It was an experience I won´t repeat.
He´s like one of those precocious movie brats I hate because they ruin whole movies for me the second they open their mouths.

    6. I read some of Grantland's movie and TV stuff, along with whatever Film Crit Hulk writes.

    7. For writing, I usually check out Reelviews, Birth Movies Death, Slashfilm and Vulture. I also read physical newspapers for reviews like Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune and Richard Roeper in the Chicago Sun Times. Chris Stuckmann on You Tube is pretty good (unironically) and I watch a lot of Screen Junkies. Ironically I watch LCJ, The Flick Pick, Schmoes Know, Jeremy Jahns and AMC Movie Talk.

    1. It's as if Zack Snyder watched his final cut of Man of Steel and thought "not subtle enough" and is determined to make the least subtle movie possible.

      Delete
    2. I know the movie might still not be good. It has a lot of prove after Man of Steel. But.... I adore everything about this trailer. Every. Single. Thing. Ben Affleck looks incredible.

      Delete
    3. Well, that looks very interesting and seems to make a neat connection between a new Batman and "Man of steel", which I was a little disappointed with. And Affleck looks really really angry.

  5. I'm just finishing up my 24 hour marathon. I think I might be dead. Here was the line up we ended up with:
    1. Feast
    2. Basket Case
    3. Daybreakers
    4. Whispering Corridors
    5. The Loved Ones
    6. Blood Diner
    7. Detention
    8. April Fool's Day
    9. The New York Ripper
    10. The Voices
    11. The Battery
    12. Them
    13. Horsehead
I had never seen any of them. The 3 best were Basket Case, the Loved Ones & the Battery. The 3 worst were Whispering Corridors, Blood Diner & Detention. I've been up since 7am yesterday. At one point, I talked to Jesus. He told me to go to sleep you idiot. I told him to fuck off.

    1. Nice marathon, Brent! How'd you like Horsehead? It's possibly my favorite horror film of the year so far.

    4. Cool list. I still think we need to talk about New York Ripper.

      Delete
    5. I don't think I understood what happened in New York Ripper. I thought certain people were dead then they weren't. Then there was a young girl in the hospital. I don't know who she was. Then there's the duck thing...

      Delete
    6. ^^^ Watching "New York Ripper" in the middle of the night (and 9th out of 13 people), combined with the movie's weird and dreamlike inner logic, might have something to do with the slight confusion. :-)

      Delete
    7. Just looked up "Horsehead" on IMDB.
Did you noticed that Catriona MacCall, who I remember best from Fulci´s "From beyond" is also in "Horsehead" AND "The New York Ripper"?

      Delete
    8. Yep, and Murray Head for those of us who remember One Night in Bangkok, haha!

    9. Thank you. Now I have this horrible song in my head for the rest of the day ;-))

I prefer to remember him kissing Peter Finch in "Sunday bloody sunday", performing one of the first gay kisses in mainstream cinema.

    10. I forgot to mention that Daybreakers, the Voices and Feast are worth checking out. After thinking about it, I don't think Horsehead was my jam. I think April Fool's Day gets a bad rap. I slept through most of Them. Detention needs to fuck off. Someone needs to tell Joseph Kahn that mixing cocaine, Red Bull and sugar cookies is a bad idea.

      Delete
    11. "Detention needs to fuck off." I like Detention, but that shit was funny! Hahaha! But we do agree on Daybreakers, Feast, and The Voices. April Fool's Day does get a bad rap, it's unwarranted.

      Delete
    12. Blood Diner is such a cool idea for a movie and such an awful awful execution of that idea.

      Delete
    13. I agree with Blood Diner. I heard Joseph Kahn on a Slashfilm podcast and he is just like that movie. He's nonstop and totally incoherent. "Something or someone needs to fuck off" is a Patrick rip off but I thought it was fitting.

    14. I wonder if the vamp creature in From Dusk Till Dawn with the chest mouth was Robert Rodriguez' homage to the similar creature seen in the big end sequence in Blood Diner.

  6. Had a thought....
Everyone "stole" the jump scare ending from DePalma's "Carrie"...
But, didn't DePalma "steal" that from the ending of "Deliverance"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, as a matter of fact, I believe he did. I think it's mentioned on the Carrie dvd.

      Delete
    2. Every filmmaker steals... I wish I had some precedent to cite you (I can't think of one right now), but there are cases where one filmmaker will try something, and it does okay, and another filmmaker will steal it and tweak it, or steal it outright, and it'll make a bigger impression on an audience. That seems to be what happened with Carrie.

    3. Tarantino is the ultimate example. I always refer to him as the Hip-Hop Director because he samples bits and pieces from numerous genres and puts them together to create his own vision from the endless references he has in his head.

      Delete
    4. Absolutely, Chaybee. Quentin also has the incredible ability of making his references more iconic than the films and the directors he lifts them from. David Bowie's "Putting Out Fire (With Gasoline)" is used to better effect in Inglourious Basterds than it is in Paul Schrader's Cat People.

  7. Went on a Netflix binge and watched Nightcrawler and Snowpiercer finally. Nightcrawler possibly my favorite of 2014. So much to like with that one. That ending game me chills. Snowpiercer was good. I think this got over hyped for me. I was expecting a really earth shattering movie after reading about it last year. I definitely liked it, but I was in no way blown away by it. I thought the political metaphors really hit you over the head during parts. Still happy I caught both of those finally.

  8. Has anybody seen the Clown trailer? I might be crazy but that looks pretty fuckin awesome...

    1. Clown, produced by Eli Roth? I did. I want to see that movie badly.

      Delete
    2. Me, too. And I just saw that director John Watts is the new "Spiderman" director.
Has anyone seen his "Cop Car" with Kevin Bacon?

      Delete
    3. If that's the Clown you're talking about, I saw it and thought it was surprisingly pretty good.

    4. I managed to see it yesterday, Chaybee. Not bad. Not bad at all.

    5. I went to rewatch the trailer on YouTube and found it in its entirety. I'd like to know when it's hitting Blu ray so I can add it to my collection. There's no word on a street date. It seems to be in limbo in the States. It's on dvd in the UK.

    6. I have a region free BluRay player so I am able to check out flicks that come out overseas before the US. Many times Amazon Canada even has stuff before us and it's comparable in price. It's one of the greatest purchases I ever made. I've seen all of the Black Mirror series which hasn't hit the US (may never), I saw Livide a year ago, Pontypool and Suspiria are only on Blu Ray in other regions and I have the Lynch box set which includes the Lost Highway and Fire Walk With Me Blu Ray's (FWWM has since been released in the Twin Peaks Blu Ray box in the US). These are just a few examples but I love it.

    7. I've been wanting to buy a region free player for some time. I just received the dvd documentary Leviathan, an exhaustive behind the scenes of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. It's region free, but I neglected to notice that it's PAL. If I didn't have a laptop handy, I would've been sunk.

      Delete
    8. The site I got mine from is 220 electronics. Fast shipping and good prices. I've had mine for a couple years with no problems. Just make sure you get one with the NTSC to PAL converter built in.

    9. Also, speaking of Lynch, have you seen the recent Criterion announcements for October, Chaybee? Mulholland Dr. is coming! (And Cronenberg's The Brood, no less. And Kwaidan.) I am beyond excited.

  9. Dead Alive is a god damn masterpiece. I'm very pissed that it costs $65 on Blu-ray...

    1. $65? For real? Is it out of print? It sounds like it. However -- I've heard Peter Jackson is remastering the original, uncut, Braindead version of Dead Alive for Blu ray release sometime soon.
