Weekend Open Thread

Comment bigly!

So many things this week. New trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming and War of the Planet of the Apes, both of which look great. We're a week out from Star Wars: Rogue One. Past podcast guest Jackson Stewart's movie Beyond the Gates is out in limited theatrical release and on VOD now. It's still my favorite horror movie of the year and Jackson is the best so you should all support it this weekend.

What do you guys want to talk about?

Side question: what's the movie that made the best possible use of an existing song and claimed it for its own forever? Bonus challenge: no Scorsese, Tarantino, Cameron Crowe or "Sister Christian."

  1. I was pleased by both trailers. I especially want to see more of Michael Keaton after watching the Spider-Man trailer, and the Planet of the Apes trailer just looks badass all around. Here's hoping that franchise just continues to get better and better with each installment. Just a slight correction, though: It's War *For* the Planet of the Apes, not "of." :)

  2. Oooh, side question!

Off the top of my head I'd have to say maybe Silence of the Lambs/Goodbye Horses, or Blue Velvet/In Dreams. Also, thanks to Dazed and Confused I always link Tuesday's Gone with a party ending.

    1. Nice choices. This might be a super obvious choice, and technically it's a character in the movie performing the song, but I pretty much can't hear Johnny B. Goode and not think of Back to the Future (The Power of Love, too, but I definitely don't think that counts since I believe it was written specifically for the movie).

    2. Another obvious choice but a pretty indisputable one is "Where is My Mind?" for Fight Club. I don't think it was even in the movie, but I'd think most people still associate M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" with Pineapple Express. And maybe it's just me since I'm so obsessed with the movie, but I also think Southland Tales is now permanently linked to The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done".

    3. They do play that Pixies song in the last scene of Fight Club, right? I like this choice anyway because I think the movie makes the song even better than it is on its own.

    4. I was going to say Paper Planes as well but wasn't it only in the trailer not the movie itself? That trailer was special, the movie not so much.

    5. Where is My Mind was the first thing that came into my head as well. Though also Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon and You Never Can Tell for Pulp Fiction.

    6. I also have to mention Lust for Life in Trainspotting.

    7. Tequila from Pee Wee's Big Adventure. One of the greatest scenes of all time.

    8. Lust for Life in Trainspotting is great or Nightclubbing in Trainspotting as well...great soundtrack.

E.L.O. - It's a Living Thing at the end of Boogie Nights always gets me, love it

  3. Oh duh. JOHNNY B Goode in Back to the Future.

    1. oh, and of course, Unchained Melody (1965) - Ghost (1990). That film made that song a #1 hit again if I remember correctly.

    2. Wait - duh - the correct answer is "Also Sprach Zarathustra" - Richard Strauss for "2001".

      Delete
    3. That's what I was gonna say. I don't think anything else can compare.

      Delete
    4. All three of those are so dead on that I'm embarrassed they didn't occur to me. Also Sprach Zarathustra has got to be the ultimate answer. I'm sure most people don't even know the name, and just think of it as "the classical piece from 2001".

    5. Yep - I'm one of them. Had to look up the name and I call myself a musician :) Embarrassing.

  6. I had a lot of fun with "Beyond the Gates". It was this year's "Lost After Dark" for me although I don't think it's gonna make my top ten. It gave me a really similar nostalgic experience and reminded me of something that would have been a great episode of Tales From the Darkside or Friday the 13th the Series.

    1. A strong candidate, but two reasons I'd beg to differ on that are:
-it's a Spanish language cover, and
-the song's just as, if not more, strongly associated for me with Gummo. :)

  8. Looking for the Magic in You're Next and Come and Get Your Love in Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course it helps that I'd never heard either song before seeing the movie.

    1. Blue Swede's cover of Hooked on a Feeling for GotG as well!

      Delete
    2. But Hooked on a Feeling also belongs to Reservoir Dogs and Ally McBeal!

      Delete
    3. Ha, i don't know about the latter, but it's barely in Resevior Dogs I think. I equate that movie much more with Stuck in the Middle With You.

    4. I don't like to admit it, but yeah, I totally associate Hooked on a Feeling with Ally McBeal.

  10. Just finished revisiting Krampus and A Christmas Horror story. Unfortunately, I liked Krampus even less than before this time. It really does bum me out because I want to love that film but much of it just doesn't work for me. The first half hour and last ten minutes are fantastic and I love the Christmas vibe that is captured. I just still feel like it's heavily edited and chopped, especially the kills, the Aunt drives me insane and some of the interaction/dialogue between the characters suck me out of the movie.

I liked A Christmas Horror Story a lot (and much better than Krampus when I first saw them last year) and that remains true. Sure there are flaws, the first story is the weakest but I really like the vibe of the film, there are some legitimately creepy moments and the wrap around is one of the best among anthologies. I also love radio stations in films, haha, I dunno why, I just do (maybe one of the reasons Pontypool is amazing to me?).

  11. Trying to watch a whole bunch of Christmas movies. Watched a Christmas Story for the first time, and I liked it, sweet with this under current that has to be all Bob Clark.

Also the remake of Black Christmas which I think I hated and liked in equel messure, nuts, hatefull and some of the more interesting editing choices I have seen in a while. Re-watched Krampus, which I still really liked even though I agree with everything Chaybees said, especially with some of the dialogue, I still love the tone and the monsters, the animation. To me it feels like Christmas.

Oh and I re-watched The Nice Guys - there's totally Christmas in the background and it's Shane Black, and it's still one of my favourite movies of the year. Goslings reactions and some of Crowe's off handed comments just make me so happy.

    1. Me too! Nice Guys is 4th of the year for me I think. I love it. A Christmas Story for the first time?! That is AMAZING!!! I love the Black X-Mas remake, it's so crappy compared to the original but in a fun, exploitation kind of way.

    2. Exploitation, that was the word I was trying to come up with. Yes, you are totally right!

  13. Watched all the Die Hards this week, because the Blu-ray box was cheap. First one's still a classic, the second one works and is fun, the third one is kinda meh, the fourth one even meh-er and the fifth one is outright bad. My IMDb scores for all five, in order: 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5.

    1. Correct IMDb scores: 10, 7, 8, 4, 0 ;)

    2. Oh, you were saying Die Hard. For some reason I was reading this as Lethal Weapon and was like "there's a fifth one?!" lol.

      Delete
    3. Now that mention that, I love that the lethal Weapon Series never used a subtitle. It was just Lethal Weapon 2, 3 and 4.

    4. 10, 7, 9, 3, 3.

There are no arguments for this.

  15. Approaching my one year F This Movie! anniversary and after listening to every episode under the "Movie A - Z" tab, and many more than once, it finally dawned on me to check the back catalog of podcasts that may not be obvious to find. All the special episodes - year end recaps, special guests, favorite movies etc - are hidden gems. After sifting through the "Podcast" tab and bookmarking everything I've missed, I now have roughly another 70, completely new to me, episodes. And just because they are older it doesn't make them dated. All interesting discussions.
A fun discovery has been hearing the origin stories of Adam Riske and Heath Holland. From being a twinkle in Patrick's eye by being regular listeners to becoming essential parts of the crew.
Finally, all this depth of content is helping to continually build my growing and never ending list of movies to check out. A particular gem has been "I Am a Ghost" (on Shudder) which Patrick recommended following a Chaybee recommendation in either Heath or Adam's "Favorite Movies" episode (I think).

    1. F This Movie and its community recommend all kinds of smaller horror movies. I am a Ghost is my favorite of all of them within the past several years. Where's the Blu Ray release?

    2. I've spoken to the Director before about this. The film is going on 5 years old at this point so the DVD (which is fantastic btw) is probably all we're gonna get. I also got an I Am a Ghost T-Shirt which is awesome!

  17. "Blue Moon," Van Morrison's "Moondance" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising," from... well, it hardly needs saying.

Yaaay, I win! Mr. Trump's prediction is already coming true, and he's not even President yet.

    Hello.

In light of my victory in the movie-song competition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Patrick and the gang for the F This Movie! podcast. It has superseded No Such Thing As a Fish, The Infinite Monkey Cage, Now Playing and even The Bugle in my affections (don't get me wrong; I'm still a loyal Bugler, and Wyatt Cenac looks like he might become a fixture on the new show, so the pain of John Oliver's absence could be ameliorated to some degree; and Andy is always great).

I came across FTM! about a month ago and have been binge-listening ever since, with the result that I am now running dangerously low on episodes. Unless someone has one of those Eternal Sunshine machines which can erase the part of my mind which contains the three-hundred or so extant podcasts so I can listen to all of 'em again in perpetuity, I'm going to have to be satisfied with the drip-drip of a weekly FTM! fix. Would it have killed you people to start casting pod five or so years earlier? Selfish.

For a relatively obscure (maybe it's not; I don't know) movie which everyone should watch, I would recommend Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's wonderful The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. The scene with an aged Theo in the police station is just incredible; the policeman's change in affect as the camera eventually pulls back from Anton Walbrrok is the cherry on the icing on the whatever. Deborah Kerr plays three, very different, roles in the movie, a fact which might pique Mr. Bromley's interest as he's a fan of Joe Versus the Volcano (I try not to judge) in which Meg Ryan does the same.

I liked the bit where the Krampus monster was jumping across the rooftops. That was good.

The following podcasts won't download for me for some reason:

    Napoleon Dynamite
    Reindeer Games
    Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
    Sucker Punch
    The Sleepaway Camp commentary
    That Thing You Do
    Network

Thanks again for the best movie podcast on the internets.

  18. I'd also say "Also sprach Zarathustra" from 2001 or Simple Mind's "Don't You (forget about me)" from The Breakfast Club.

    1. The Breakfast Club and Simple Minds is a GREAT call. Iconic.

      Delete
    2. Not trying to be "that guy", but I think "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was written specifically for The Breakfast Club. Billy Idol and a few other bands turned it down and Simple Minds didn't even really want to do it.

I was going to suggest "Singin' In The Rain" from A Clockwork Orange or Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" from Wild At Heart.

    3. If anyone is curious about an alternate version of modern history, Idol's version of the song appears on one of his greatest hits collections. It's not exactly a reinvention of the wheel, but it works as a curio.

      Delete
  19. Side question - "Singin' in the Rain" (title song and five or six others, all used in earlier MGM musicals from 1929-1939).

Just getting my head around what I feel about Yoga Boxers, its a strange thing, it did have a Children shouldn't play with Dead things reference that caught my off guard and made me smile for ages

  22. Watched Ti West's In a Valley of Violence and liked it quite a bit - I think it's slightly hurt by the existence of Bone Tomahawk and John Wick and I didn't love the performances of the lead villain, his girlfriend or Taissa Farmiga but Hawke and Jumpy are great and Travolta should just stick with Westerns from now on.

Having finally watched it a couple weeks ago, I'm catching up on the Mulholland Drive podcast. Patrick, back in my super-voracious reading days, I too ended up hitting my sister's "Babysitter Club" books in a pinch on vacation - I even read some of the ones starring the Babysitters' little sisters doing shit!

    1. Oh fuck, "Don't Stop Me Now" in Hardcore Henry! Ha ha! I know tons of people have serious problems with that movie, but it's a tie right now for me between that and Too Late as to which is my favorite movie of the year.
