  2. Great podcast. I always love the summer shows. I really hope the next podcast is on IT cause I'm dying to hear your thoughts on it.

  3. Unfortunately, I believe the Sam Jackson singing in the Capital One commercial is not a joke. It's better than I can do but, no, it's not very good. It's actually a baffling campaign as they have partnered with Spotify and trying to get people to go visit their streaming service with a bad rendition of a classic seems to be counterproductive. Perhaps they couldn't get the rights to use Al Green's vocal version? No clue.

Great job as always, fellas. This podcast pretty sums up what I have been feeling all year. That there are many more bad movies in comparison to last year (I'm talking as a whole, both theatrical and DTV). Could be I have a short memory though.

  4. I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to 2016 for being so harsh.

  5. Haha. I forgot about bucket of pizza. Classic.

  6. I'm really surprised how much you guys hated It Comes at Night. I understand it's not a movie one could really "enjoy" but I haven't seen anything else tackle grief and paranoia in such a dark and honest way. I'm sure it has a lot to do with some personal stuff that happened shortly before seeing it but I thought it was great.

Either way, great podcast. Always one of my favorites!

    1. Yeah, I really liked It Comes at Night. Sure, it's not the movie anyone would expect, but that's fine. It's a really good version of what it's trying to be.

    2. It Comes at Night: "Do you like baseball and your best friend?"
      Me: "Yes"
It Comes at Night: (Kills your best friend with a baseball)

    3. Sometimes it's ok for a movie to be heavy and upsetting. ;)

    4. Nope! (Jk...I agree with you. I just don't like that movie so I give it no concessions)

    5. It's like the opposite of "I can't argue with fun". I can't argue with 'I feel miserable watching this'.

    6. I can understand why people would like/appreciate It Comes At Night. I can't understand why people would be surprised when someone doesn't like it at all based on what that movies asks you to go through. Everyone has a line in the sand or personal buttons and I think It Comes at Night makes no apologies about testing those boundaries for many viewers.

    7. It's because it makes no apologies that made it really resonate with me.

    8. I get it. I'm the same way with The Mist. Sometimes I like movies that make no apologies and sometimes I don't. Movies are strange. Glad you dig it so much though.

    9. haha No, I get it man. I just wasn't personally bothered by it, but it's not crazy that you were.

  7. Great show guys! I listened to this while at work and tried not to die laughing at many points.

For those interested, here's how I would break up my summer at the movies.

LOVED: Wonder Woman, The Big Sick, Wind River

LIKED: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, It Comes at Night, Baby Driver

IT'S FINE: Atomic Blonde, War for the Planet of the Apes, Spider-man: Homecoming (barely), Valarian, Logan Lucky

DISAPPOINTED: Alien: Covenant, Dunkirk, Annabelle: Creation, The Dark Tower, A Ghost Story, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Cannot wait to the IT podcast.... or the screening on friday I'm attending. Gosh, I'm just so damn excited. It feels like my Star Wars.

  8. Just to jump to the defense of Wentworth Miller, he also wrote the best film of 2013 for me: Stoker.

    1. People underestimate good ol Wentworth cause he's as handsome as Rob.

  10. Regarding It Comes at Night and Patrick's question "can you hate a well made movie?" Well I too hated it. For all the reasons Adam said and more. But, more to the question, the movie was well shot, I thinks that's about it. But I always think about what Soderbergh said at that long ass speech he gave at the San Fran film Society in 2013 and his questionin of "what is cinema?" He described it as something that wouldn't exist without that artist creating it. Not a committee, but a singular vision. Therefore, he says cinema can be a great masterpiece, or, cinema can be "an unwatchable piece of shit." So my opinion of It Comes at Night, whilst unnecessarily highbrow, it's still cinema, but bad and I wouldn't ever go near it again. Again, imo.

  11. Hey so, I feel like this was kind of discussed on the pod, but does anyone else feel like the last 5 minutes or so of BABY DRIVER are the most bizarre, awful final scenes? If the last few scenes aren't in that movie, I like it a lot more (although I dislike most of the third act, with everything up to that being pretty stellar).

    1. specifically, everything after the bridge stand off is what I'm referring to.

    2. I'll agree with you that a lot of the implications are weird.

    3. ALso just structurally, what are the Court scenes doing there? I mean, we saw all the stuff they are describing happen not 20 minutes ago, and we like Baby so we should already be on his side. I just don't understand why they exist.

    4. Those scenes are awful. A lot of stuff in Baby Driver shows me that Wright really needs a co-writer.

    5. It's a fairy tale. It ends like a fairy tale. It takes the direct opposite route of the Breathless ('84) ending that the film is heavily inspired by. I love the ending.

    6. I like Ben's fairy tale take. I've seen the movie 3 times now, and I honestly don't mind it anymore. You notice the good things that he does throughout the movie more, and the fact that his release is like that daydream he had makes me wonder if he really gets out or not. Either way, I enjoy everything else so much that I don't mind. It could end after Brighton Rock for all I care.

    7. As someone who has not seen the film I don't know how Brighton Rock works into it or if at all. Are you talking of the film Brighton Rock? I have seen both versions of the film and really loving the original. I also love the actual Brighton. I went again last June, it really is very pretty.
