I Stream, You Stream Vol. 75

by Patrick Bromley
The 75th installment! Is that a milestone?

Teeth (2007, dir. Mitchell Lichtenstein) In honor of Revenge being released today, I'm recommending another great revenge movie from the last decade (practically). I won't elaborate on what it's about; just Google "vagina dentata" and thank me later. (Watch on Netflix)
Spontaneous Combustion (1990, dir. Tobe Hooper) One of the few remaining Tobe Hooper movies I haven't enthusiastically recommended here, probably because I don't think it was especially easy to find on streaming. Now it is! Brad Dourif commits to the bit as the product of a government experiment who can start fires at will. Less unhinged than a lot of Hooper's prior work, Spontaneous Combustion is still a lot of fun for us T-Hoops acolytes, with cool practical fire effects and a John Landis cameo that returns the favor for Coming to America. On a semi-related note, I had a dream last week that Tobe was still alive and I got to spend time with him and I woke up crying, so that's where I'm at. (Watch on Amazon Prime Video)
Dreamscape (1984, dir. Joseph Ruben) I'm pretty sure I've recommended this movie before, but it's super underrated and doesn't get talked about nearly enough. The second PG-13 movie ever released (it missed beating Red Dawn by just a few days) features Dennis Quaid entering people's dreams to help prevent an assassination. Yes, it sounds like Inception, but it's a lot pulpier and more imaginative in its visuals, which are super cool. Plus you get David Patrick Kelly as a weird snake man. I really like this movie. (Watch free with ads on TubiTV)
No One Lives (2013, dir. Ryûhei Kitamura) Having recently recommended Ryûhei Kitamura's most recent film Downrange recently (streaming now on Shudder!), I can now also tell you to take a look at his earlier film No One Lives. I know Heather is a huge fan of this one; I like the idea a little more than I like the execution, but there's a lot of really cool stuff in here. Basically, it's one kind of horror movie until you realize it's actually a totally different horror movie, which the characters figure out around the same time as the audience. It's also the most I've liked Luke Evans in a movie. (Watch on Shudder)

  1. Look forward to this list every week. No One Lives was great, definitely best to go into it cold & clueless.

  4. i don't know if The Guest is streaming somewhere (i assume it is), but i strongly suggest you go watch it, and then go on youtube, on Red Letter Media channel, and watch their latest Re:View video, which feature the writer of You're Next and The Guest, in which they talk about the later one.

  5. Spontaneous Combustion finally clicked with me on the last viewing and I blooming love it! But... Then again I love The Mangler too, only a filmmaker like Hooper could make these movies and for that he will always be one of the true Masters of Horror for me... ps. I think No One Lives is one of the best horror films of the last ten years!

  7. I can't often enjoy the recommendations, as I'm outside the US (and what's available is often different), but I do enjoy these lists and the mini reviews.
