  2. I just rewatched Dream Warriors myself. It's really fun and I like it a lot, but it doesn't come close to touching the magic of the original. That film is a masterpiece, versus a fun 80's horror flick.

    1. You’re on my list, Elper! (Totally joking, I’ll allow it)

    2. haha It's ok, I like Nightmare 1 better than all but one horror film (Fright Night), so Dream Warriors is in good company.

    3. I'm with you on this one, Daniel. The first original is the foundation that could very easily have been the perfect stand alone horror classic, but also has that ability to allow for great sequels to follow. And Dream Warriors was one of my favorite sequels to the Nightmare franchise. It goes 1st film, New Nightmare, Dream Warriors, Freddy's Dead (not ashamed of this one).

    4. Or perhaps NOES 2: Freddy's Revenge is actually the best sequel of the franchise? Perhaps it is. Perhaps..yes, it definitely is.

  3. Loved the episode. Got excited when the conversation turned to 'great rock n roll movies'. Instead of pointing out faves that went unmentioned, I will just voice my support for articles or maybe even a podcast on the subject. Thanks guys!

  4. I will say it proudly: Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies, and I would LOVE to hear a podcast episode where you guys talk solely about that film!

  5. School Of Rock is one of my all time favorite films. Alejandra, I agree with your love of that epic montage. I too love it. Because when I speak to my nieces and nephew about rock music I find myself getting lost in how passionate I am about it. And they soak it up! And that makes me proud because there's so many endless facets to Rock n' Roll, as to where Bubblegum Pop and Hip Hop (especially today's Hip Hop) are really only about one thing. There's nothing to branch off to with those 2 genres of music. So in that montage seeing the kid who plays the drums watching all the classic footage collage of all the greatest drummers in music, and he just seems so captivated by it! It truly is amazing. In high school, for 1 semester only, I took a class called Music 101. But really the only genre of music we learned about was Rock n' Roll. It was the most fun I had in high school. We watched Pink Floyd's Brick In The Wall, we watched The Beatles Anthology, "Tommy"from The Who. The teacher would ask all the students to bring in their favorite bands or rock artists on CD and play a track we'd all discuss what we thought, what we loved or didn't like.

  6. Great podcast you two! Perfectly expounded why this movie is a keeper. The ending credits are the best with it just being a long 5-6 shot of him riffing with the kids.
When mentioning some other movies Black has been in, you missed Be Kind Rewind, which is my favourite movie he's in. It's funny, and is just a heartwarming tale about some people that love movies. Also, forgive me, but I (and only 2 dozen others, apparently) liked Nacho Libre.
I like Black best when he steers clear of the "playing the guitar and singing funny stuff" trope (I really hate musical comedy.) In School Of Rock, however, it's done really well, in that it's not just stuck in to deliver jokes, but fits rather well into the plot.

    1. Couple other things:
      1) If any of you have 7-12 year old kids, the Nickelodeon School Of Rock TV series is decent. It's on Canadian Netflix. Not sure about the USA.
      2) Patrick, I love you, but Led Zeppelin rocks! You need to go back to school...perhaps a....school..of..rock? bada boom!

  7. I'd never heard of Tenacious D before this podcast, and am now loving their videos. Very funny stuff, I'll have to seek out the movie.

So Alejandra, are you the girl who crushes on Jack Black over Jude Law in The Holiday? ;)

    1. Wait I have never seen The Holiday but I am that girl. Unless that movie is insane this is kind of a no brainer

    2. I wouldn't go into Tenacious D the movie expecting it to be "good;" it is mostly an excuse to string together about a dozen songs with two or three inspired bits in there amidst a bunch of trash. It starts and ends well, though.

  8. I finally watched this thanks to this podcast, and I loved it! LOVED it. A perfect all ages movie

  9. Man, School of Rock came out right when I first had a driver's license and some money, as well as when I first started to develop some taste. Limiting it just comedies, that year I had seen Anger Management, Dickie Roberts and My Boss's Daughter before seeing School of Rock. I realized during the movie just how bad my other choices had been. School of Rock was a breath of fresh air. It helped that I was already a fan of Black going in (from Saving Silverman; I said I was just beginning to develop some taste), but mostly it was just that School of Rock is everything you guys said.

I still am a huge Jack Black fan and I think this is his best outing as the star of a kids movie. Which I didn't realize until now that he done enough of them for it to be a sizeable portion of his body of work between this, Gulliver's Travels, Kung Fu Panda, Goosebumps and sort of Jumanji. I think he works best as part of an ensemble, like in Jumanji, Tropic Thunder, or The Big Year (I believe I am the only person that likes that movie and I'm fine with that). Or it might just be when he works with Linklater, because he is also great in Bernie.

    Great show.

  11. I am generally concerned at Patrick's love of KISS and general indifference toward the the rest of the genre of hard rock. Although, his love of the Replacements tends to balance an music missteps or faux pas, I would like to know Patrick's top 5 favorite hard rock bands

    Charles

ps. Metal bands are also fine.
