  1. The insane thing about Gillian Jacobs' Coke commercial that you guys didn't touch on is that after she trades what is apparently a penny arcade slug for a Diet Coke she passes and nods to fellow actor Karan Soni (from Other Space and both Deadpools), who continues walking through the pedestrians in the background. Soni has his own commercial - released soon after Jacobs' - wherein the camera follows him instead of Jacobs, while she becomes a background figure in his commercial. Apparently Coke believes this campaign requires a Rashomon-level POV flip to get our attention. Or are we seeing the beginnings of an HFCSCU (High Fructose Corn Syrup Cinematic Universe)?

    1. This ad campaign needs to either be stopped or continued indefinitely like it's the movie 20 Bucks.

  2. My favorite movie of the summer was First Reformed, but MI: Fallout comes close. Hereditary is also amazing.

Regarding good comedies this summer, I think the funniest movie I saw was Eighth Grade. I know it's not just a comedy, but it is a terrific comedy.

Also, not to be confrontational at all, but how can we say blockbusters continue to get worse when Fallout, Ant Man & the Wasp, and Infinity War all came out this summer? Even Deadpool 2 I liked way more than I expected to. Obviously there are bad blockbusters, but there always are just like with any kind of movie.

And I know people say this a lot, but it must be said again. All the respect to Riske for going to see every movie so he can tell us about them!

    1. About the blockbusters, I agree with both you and Patrick. I think the three you mention are all really good blockbusters, but I also think they don't stand out like a summer classic normally would. I don't know why that is.

    2. Fallout is a summer classic for me personally, but I do get that sentiment. Have I given up on getting a new Raiders of the Lost Ark or Jurassic Park in any future summer? Yeah probably. I mostly look to the horror genre for my new everlasting classics. But do I think blockbusters are getting worse? No I really don't. Even if I briefly felt like that after Fallen Kingdom. ;)

    3. If there's one thing I've learned listening to 80's All Over it's that we movie fans tend to have selective memories about how good summer blockbusters were in the past because Raiders, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, etc. cast such big shadows. There are easily as many bad movies that came out in Summer 1988 as 2018, if not more.

As for why they don't stick, I think some of that just has to do with getting older. I can only speak for myself here, but most movies don't stand out like they used to for me, but I think that's me, not the movies. Infinity War would have rocked 10 year old me's world like Raiders did. But now I have bills, and jobs, and a family so I don't get to bask in the movie like I used to, so it doesn't stick as much. Again, I can only speak for myself.

TL:DR- Great episode, and I thought it was an above-average summer for movies.

    4. I think that's such a good point. I'm sure I would have geeked out about Infinity War so much more when I was 12, but right now I geeked out about First Reformed. It's just more where my interest is right now.

  3. I look forward to listening to this, I just haven't had the opportunity yet. Hopefully tonight.

My general thoughts on the summer, however, would be that it's looking like multiple movies might stay on my top 10 list of the year unless something crazy happens. Avengers: Infinity War, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Searching, Eighth Grade, and especially Won't You Be My Neighbor, which IS my favorite movie of the year thus far, are all strong contenders.

Crazy Rich Asians is also good, and I'm glad it's making a bunch of money and has been so popular, but I don't know if I LOVE it like a lot of other people seem to.

  4. Now that I am listening, Filmworker sounds really interesting. I’ll definitely have to get to that sooner or later. Thanks for the recommendation, Adam!

  5. Thoughts on changing the name of the podcast to The Joey King Hour?

  6. Really enjoyed the podcast this week. Except for the shame I feel for preferring Pepsi... #PepsiChallenged

    1. Back when I could drink regular soda, I always preferred Pepsi to Coke. I still do. It's Diet Pepsi I can't do.

    2. It’s all good I think I’m a Dr. Pepper man going forward in honor of Tobe Hooper.

  7. I really enjoyed the episode. I thought this summer's crop of blockbusters was largely very good, though. Maybe that is just because I liked Ocean's 8 and Solo more than you guys did. I mean, I get the complaints about both of those movies, but I found Ocean's 8 delightful even though it was slight and I loved Solo when it was just being a space western and not just trying to remind me of other Star Wars moments.

One movie that didn't get mentioned that I think really deserves to be seen is Blindspotting. I feel like it got overlooked with Sorry to Bother You and BlacKkKlansman both hitting this summer as well, but it is every bit as good and thoughtful as those two movies are.

    1. Glad to hear good things about Blindspotting. I wanted to see it, but it was down to one showtime a day pretty fast which made it challenging.

  8. I wanted to engage with all senior citizens after Mamma Mia 2. First Reformed is my second favorite movie of the year behind Black Klansman. Then rounded out by Crazy Rich Asians, Fallout and Infinity War. I thought this summer was really great for the quality of all kinds of movies ....yeah except for comedies. You know it can get so much worse like that one summer where Star Trek Beyond was almost the only good movie. Thought Upgrade was fine, it tried.

  9. I was going to tweet at Adam Riske to see if I could get him to pronounce the new Jennifer Garner movie like Laurence Fishburne in "Higher Learning," but I couldn't figure out how to word it, so I didn't do it. And damn it if the man didn't show up with that joke already locked and loaded for the podcast! You are an All-Star, Riske!
