  1. Oh nice!! These are 2 of my favorite movies so far this year. Just started listening so I'm not sure how you two felt, but Hustlers blew me away. So good. So surprising.

  2. American Hustle was definitely the most Scorsese wanna be thing I've ever seen. It was like punk rock Scorsese. Only interested in playing two chords, and even doing that messy. But I liked it.

    1. I forgot American Hustle. That's some major Scorsese fan fiction. Good call.

    2. I remember LOVING that trailer and then... accepting the movie.

    3. exactly. It still has my favorite scene Jeremy Renner has ever been a part of however (the "Delilah" singing scene)

    4. lol And Joker is straight up advertising itself as Scorsese fan-fiction. So weird.

    5. Obviously haven't seen Joker yet, but I agree. It looks like King of Comedy in an alternate universe.

  3. Hey Erika! You may not agree with all of these choices, and some of them are on the older side, but here are PG-13 or PG movies that come to mind that could be fun to show at a movie club:

    Spider-Man 2
    Groundhog Day
    School of Rock
    Jurassic Park
    Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    The Empire Strikes Back
    Edge of Tomorrow
    The Princess Bride
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Apollo 13
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
    The Goonies
    Back to the Future
    E.T.
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    Inception
    Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
    Men in Black
    Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    Jaws
    Dumb and Dumber
    Zoolander
Psycho/The Birds (both seem pretty tame by today's standards)

  4. Erika,

I wonder if your kids would be responsive to some teen-focused stuff.

    I'd recommend:

    Perks of Being A Wallflower
    Clueless
10 Things I Hate About You
    Dead Poets Society
    Say Anything
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    Napolean Dynamite
    Never Been Kissed
    Juno
    Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

(man it's hard to find non-rated R stuff!)

  5. I want to address Erika's comments on the Sid Haig issue (which were pretty much spot on). I saw this on night 2 (Tuesday) and there was a 30 minute making of featurette after the movie which covered many interesting things about the production including the Sid Haig situation. Rob initially wrote the movie with Sid as the 3rd character, but started to scale back the role after Sid informed him there were a lot of things in the script that his health would not allow him to do. So Rob changed some scenes and moved things around to make the role less physical, but it turned out Sid couldn't do those things either. In the featurette Rob said, "It quickly became evident that we were at a major crossroad: Either pull the plug and not make the movie or recast the role in a way that would require minimal rewrting." So that's what happened according to Rob Zombie himself. I would like to note that Rob was extremely classy and thoughtful in his comments and wouldn't go into detail about Sid's health or mention any specific actions that Sid couldn't do out of concern for Sid's privacy. I really respected him for having such tact.

    1. Thank you for sharing. I agree - very respectful in respecting his privacy. I'm sure it's so difficult for Haig right now - recovering from an accident and knowing that a movie partly written for him had to go on without him. I hope he is doing ok.

How cool that your theater had that featurette. Our screening didn't have much surrounding the film!

  6. Erika: "They were all gorgeous."
    Patrick: "You can say that."

"You can say that." was said more than once. Man, that was sad. I'm not being snide, but I think it's thoroughly ridiculous that Patrick felt the need to place such PC strictures on himself. J-Lo was pretty. Now may I please apologize for my disgusting male gaze which sometimes clocks that women aren't men.

  7. Thank you for this episode.

I was very underwhelmed by Hustlers the first time I saw it, but I'm now excited to give it another viewing because it would not be the first time I've been WAY off upon first viewing.
