I Stream, You Stream Vol. 120

by Patrick Bromley
Your first streaming picks for #ScaryMovieMonth!

The Furies (2019, dir. Tony D'Aquino) This Shudder exclusive just premiered yesterday. I don't want to say too much about it, because the less you know going in, the better time you'll have. I didn't even know the premise, only the title, and I had a blast with this one. All I will say is that it's The Running Man but with slashers and final girls. It's one of my favorite horror movies of the year. (Watch on Shudder)
One Cut of the Dead (2018, dir. Shinichiro Ueda) Another of my favorites of the year. After popping up illegally on Amazon for a weekend earlier this year (or was it late last year?), this is finally available to properly stream thanks to Shudder. I'm a little hard pressed to call it horror because of the direction it takes -- again, which I don't want to spoil -- but it does involve the making of a zombie movie, so it counts for #ScaryMovieMonth. This is one of the most heartwarming and inspirational films of 2019. Trust. (Watch on Shudder)
Under the Shadow (2016, dir. Babak Anvari) Buried under the shadow of The Babadook when it first came out, this Iranian gem finds a woman and her daughter being haunted in Tehran. There's a palpable sense of dread and a couple of really good scares here. Plus, I had never seen a horror film from Iran until I saw this one at a festival back in 2016. It's exciting to see the horror movies other countries are producing, particularly when they're as tied into the national identity as this one is. (Watch on Netflix)
Saw VI (2009, dir. Kevin Gruetert) Still my favorite of the Saw movies, probably because it's the one entry in the franchise that attempts to tackle something larger than itself -- in this case, America's broken health care system. It's less of a mystery than several other Saw films, but it presents a protagonist (Peter Outerbridge) who's actually worth following: he's a scumbag, but he's capable of redemption and actually tries to prevent more deaths at Jigsaw's hands. People who claim that every Saw movie was worse than the one that preceded it are out of their minds. (Watch on Hulu)
The Hills Run Red (2009, dir. Dave Parker) This underrated slasher is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, making it hard to believe we never got a sequel or even a franchise built around its slasher, known only as Babyface. Former podcast guest Dave Parker directs from David J. Schow's script, a nasty bit of business about a film student trying to track down a lost horror film and regretting what he finds. The acting is sometimes uneven, but this is one of those smaller slashers that I am always trying to talk up. (Watch free with ads on Vudu)

  2. Ohh nice I was actively wondering about The Hills Run Red. I've seen a few things on Twitter about it lately from people I trust, now yours solidifies its a soon watch. I always thought it was like, one of those Asylum rip offs of Hills Have Eyes. Anyways, thanks! Furies sounds good too!
