  2. Wasn't it Tobey Maguire that got smoked in Ice Storm? Or am I mixing up my big dewy eyed boys?

    1. Toby is stuck on the train when Elijah is electrocuted. And now I can't help but see them with sopping wet eyes.

    2. Thanks! I will continue to not rewatch 'The Ice Storm'. No offense intended.

  3. Yay!! Bringing the early Jackson love. Why is Dead Alive in the 1950s. Because there were parts of Wellington in the early 1990s that still looked like the 1950s. It was probably easier for set design. To be fair it took us Kiwi's a long time to leave that decade 🤣🤣

    1. Having grown up in Vermont on the other side of the globe, there's absolutely places that are still stuck in the 1950's. The 1920's even.

  4. I never leave my physical media in its packaging. (I always make sure the discs play.) There are plenty of films I have not watched, though. There has been so much competition with the DVR this month that I have not gotten to as many of my discs as I planned to.

  7. Great podcast sirs! Patrick..as usual we are are crazy aligned in our experiences..like you i discovered this in the pre-internet days and it was that special flick to share with buds. I view it a bit like my experiences with Evil Dead 2 and Toxic Avenger: game changing viewing that lets you know theres some crazy/creative/different flicks out there that can go over the top with gore but also humor and watchability. And, like you, i used it to seek out more on this Peter Jackson guy (whatever happened to him?) and similar flicks.

Thanks dudes for the awesome discussion around movies and Dead Alive!

  11. One additional comment....i HIGHLY suggest folks seek out Jacksons "They Shall Not Grow Old" documentary. I caught it during its very very limited theatrical 3d run mostly to see what Jackson was up to post shire revisits. It totally impressed me.

For starters, anyone who's deep dove into the massive amount of movie extras for the LOTR series knows that Jackson is driven by passion and commitment to his projects. The very fact that he could do anything following LOTR/Hobbit and choose to do a relatively low key documentary that very few people have seen should tell you how much this means to him.

Next up is the technology. Holy shit. Peter turned the resources and science available to him to restore and accent century old footage and information.

Finally, i find 'talking heads' documentaries to be often boring and uninteresting. Films like They Shall Not Grow Old and the also amazing Apollo 11 (2019) understand that so they tell the story through as much original footage and voices as possible. At the end of my first viewing, as i left the theater, i said to myself "If i was a high school history teacher, i would absolutely ensure that every class i taught going forward would view this documentary when discussing WW1. Also, I'd ensure any galaxy maps identified Pluto as a planet."

Looking forward, i CANNOT WAIT for the Beatles documentary. Im stoked that they extended it a bunch and that we get to see it soon.

    1. Seconded. Also caught "They Shall Not Grow Old" in 3D in theaters (twice, second time with my old man in Arizona), and both times it blew me away and left me crying tears of both sadness and (surprisingly) joy at the filmmaking efforts by Jackson & Company. :'( A great documentary about both the subject matter and the technique of making a feature-length docudrama about WWI.

    2. So glad you saw it as well JM!!! I agree about the emotional impact of it. By focusing on the people and their experiences, the experience is far more personal. Equally it brings the viewer onto the field to see how horrifying the conditions of war were. brilliant work.
