great ep sirs...one i was very much looking forward to. i appreciate how y'all take the time to break down your thoughts and experiences. So much of movie fandom online is boiled down to extreme polarizing views, soundbites, and vitriol towards those that differ. Its nice to hear constructive criticism and great exchange of viewpoints.
Peace and "There is no Spork" (my personal matrix takes place at a taco bell)
Great conversation. I think I liked it more than the Fthismovie crew. I just rewatched the first 3 movies, and kind of enjoyed where 2 & 3 went (It's a lot of nonsense, but still a bunch of cool sci fi ideas), so I was just ready for more Matrix. It's pretty messy in places, but I appreciate a swing for the fences rather than strictly retreading the same material (which it does, but with somewhat of a wink I feel).
In particular, I appreciated how it was taking the piss out of sequels and reboots in the first part. Although that is somewhat dropped after they leave the Matrix, it's still somewhat present. I can't remember the exact quotes, but there were several times it seemed like the movie was saying "Look, you want us to do this again? Ok, then, we'll do it."
Another thing I liked (and it's not my idea, but someone on Slashfilmcast podcast mentioned it) was how rather than having to save the world...again...it's a simpler story, about how Neo just wants to get back with Trinity again, have her choose to leave the Matrix. A love story at it's heart.
Some things I didn't like was the new Morphius character. I just didn't get how he worked. Or why he was there. He didn't really do much, did he? Mostly I was missing Laurence Fishburne in his cool shades, all decked in leather, saying somewhat mysterious but wise sounding things in his beautiful baritone voice.
It's not going to be in my top 10 for this year, but I'm glad we got it, and especially that Lana directed, and very especially pleased that she gave a big middle finger to the studio insisting that a sequel be made (rather hard handedly, but maybe that was intentional).
Oh, one last thing, I liked how it didn't set up a sequel. In fact the last scene is taking the piss out of the studios again, "We're not here to negotiate anything.", and then our two heroes/lovers go flying off in the sunset, "painting the sky with rainbows". It's a perfect ending.
I really liked this movie. A little sad that general audiences and the fthismovie contributors didn't like it as much, but that's normal that opinions differ. It's the first of these reboots/sequels in a while I've appreciated.
I read a comment on Reddit that said: "The first half is there to explain why the second half even exists (and apologizes for it)." This meta commentary on movies (and games) isn't new and nothing I want to see in a Matrix movie, that always had bigger concepts in mind, even if not really able to address them properly in 2 and 3.

ReplyDeleteMhh, maybe not "properly", but satisfyingly for me.
