  1. Can someone explain why this movie is so difficult to get on blu-ray?

    1. I have had several conversations about this subject, Kunider. Everyone has said that the producer, Richard Rubinstein, asks for a lot of money for the rights to release it. He also owns the rights to Martin, which has not had a legitimate release for a long time. Recently I asked the man who runs the Exhumed Films shows here in Pennsylvania about screening Dawn of the Dead. He said that he paid three times the normal screening fee.

I have the Anchor Bay DVD set, which I picked up used very cheaply about a decade ago. I am still seeing it sell for $30 to $40 U.S. dollars on Ebay.

Another crazy release situation is the Russ Meyer films. Besides a blu-ray release for a few films in the UK, there have been no recent releases at all, even on DVD. The Meyer estate has not been managed well.

    2. I was lucky enough to get the italian release of DotD, which contain the 4K disc (no HDR) and multiple cut of the movie on region B discs, but i'd prefer a region A disc

So, screw producers and their dirty money grabbing hands.

    3. It may be that the DotD rights in Europe are held by a different entity. With much of the production money coming from Dario Argento, the European rights could have been part of the agreement. Argento did have the authority to create his own cut.

  2. So Patrick..you had some subtle psychic energy in the opening...at one point you are trying to describe movies an actor was in and you first said Deadpool but then changed to Logan. Crazy timing as Reynolds and Jackman announced today that Wolverine will be in the next Deadpool flick!

  3. First off, I don’t like to decorate until Oct 1st (to keep it feeling special) but my kids took a box out of the rafters last weekend and now the inside of our house looks like Halloween and I’m not complaining, much.
Second, great discussion. You are so right about a large part of this movie’s attraction being that it is not a straight up horror. That is drifts into cop movie, romantic drama, and other genre’s allows the horror elements to really pack a punch. I liken it to 2007’s THE SIGNAL, which tells one story but as a straight horror, then black comedy, then as sci-fi drama. Although it’s much less subtle about its gear shifts than Dawn, it’s still a movie I rewatch every year.
Last, I’ve only ever seen Dawn theatrically when the 3D version was show at Beyond Fest in 2016. While I’d rather see a grainy print at the New Beverly, I still enjoyed the 3D version. I don't remember thinking it was gimmicky, but it’s been a while.

  4. Halloween isn't a big deal here in Finland, so I haven't seen any Halloween stuff on store shelves yet. But I did see Christmas chocolates already out in a store this week!

    1. I feel you, not a lot going on in Germany, either. Even if it is getting more in the last couple of years (which I appreciate). My friends find it funny, that I decorate around the 1st of October, and some even say something like: It's not even Halloween yet. But I don't want to decorate only for one weekend. Most of my decoration stays up until Christmas, when it just merges into a little spooky Christmas decoration, that then stays up the whole January.
Since I'm in Saint Paul at the moment, I love to see the early Halloween decoration some house have at their outside. I would love to be in the north/northeast during Halloween, since it already has the right look anyway (fall colors coming in strong at the moment). "Sadly", I will be somewhere in California at that time... so I won't complain to much. :D It will have a different tone there, for sure.

    2. Thanks Mikko and Dirk for your comments! Great to hear about things from a Finland or German perspective. Here in the States it feels like people are more eager than ever for Halloween festivitities...probably due to the covid shut down in the past few years....many houses (mine included) started decorating last week and alot more probably will once we officially hit october.

  5. Dawn of the Dead, scary movie month stars early, and I love it. This is a movie I've now seen twice, once in the cinema, once at home, in two different versions. The first time, I was more like Doug, more like "meh", why is this so beloved. The second time it worked way better for me, I "got it" - maybe? I will watch this movie again and again, it draws me back. Why? I didn't know until this podcast, because you guys really unwrapped the effect this movie can have. Thank you!
