by Adam Riske and Patrick Bromley
New double features to enjoy during the dog days of summer.Double Feature 1:Adam: #1: Ghost (1990)
Patrick: #2: Waterworld (1995)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Carlito’s Way, The Stand, The Godfather Part III
Patrick: Theme: Rick Aviles is a Scumbag
Patrick: RIP Rick Aviles. He was good at playing a villain or a gross guy even though I know he was a stand-up and probably very nice. It’s weird that I can’t think of Ghost without thinking of Willie Lopez. It’s even weirder that I thought Ghost looked so terrible when I was a kid and then it ended up being my favorite movie for a time. I saw it like seven times in theaters. This double is the kind of tribute to an actor that only gets tributes at the Cinemarink.
Adam: Rick Aviles might be one of my formative experiences recognizing what a character actor does because of his role in Ghost. I saw that movie when I was only 8 years old, and he left an indelible impression. I’m glad we’re pairing two really entertaining movies together and getting to pay tribute to an underrated actor.
Double Feature 2:
Patrick: #1: The Dark Knight (2008)
Adam: #2: Iron Man (2008)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: Superman, Batman (1989), Spider-Man, The Avengers
Adam: Theme: Seismic Superhero Movies
Adam: I sometimes criticize the modern superhero movie subgenre but like most trends you eventually tire of it’s usually pretty good in the beginning. Back in 2008, I thought Iron Man was a blast and The Dark Knight was one of my favorite movies of that year. Hopefully this evening of programming can help me remember some of that early enthusiasm.
Patrick: I’ve been jonesing to rewatch The Dark Knight recently since I heard a piece of the score during the Warner Bros. studio tour. These are both good movies and what they wrought isn’t really their fault, but it does make me reluctant to revisit them as much as I otherwise might.
Double Feature 3:Adam: #1: Some Like it Hot (1959)
Patrick: #2: Just One of the Guys (1985)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Tootsie, Juwanna Man, Just One of the Girls, She’s the Man
Patrick: Theme: Nobody’s Perfect
Patrick: “Drag is funny!” - Movies for 40 years
Adam: This is worth it just to see Just One of the Guys on the big screen. I was very confused by that movie when I saw it on cable during my pre-school years. Good times!
Double Feature 4:
Patrick: #1: Snake Eyes (1998)
Adam: #2: Deep Impact (1998)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: The Truman Show, Saving Private Ryan, Dead Man on Campus
Adam: Theme: Paramount Summer 1998
Adam: Paramount had a pretty great Summer 1998! I was tempted to book Dead Man on Campus to follow Snake Eyes (since it’s a change of pace and they’re both goofy fun), but I remembered that Snake Eyes was supposed to end with a tidal wave so I’m giving the people what they want with Deep Impact which has all sorts of disasters including tidal waves.
Patrick: I have still never seen Deep Impact! I love this double because I’m super nostalgic for this summer. (Did you ever read The Gross? It’s awesome.) Anything that puts me back in that headspace will make for a happy night at the movies.
Double Feature 5:Adam: #1: Urban Cowboy (1980)
Patrick: #2: Demolition Man (1993)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: The Lovely Bones, All the Money in the World, Aliens, Back to the Future
Patrick: Theme: Movies That Were Recast
Patrick: I never knew that Sissy Spacek was supposed to play the Debra Winger part in Urban Cowboy until I did a little reading on it. I guess she and Travolta didn’t get along, which is hard to imagine. It’s even harder to imagine anyone but Debra Winger in that movie. I only saw it for the first time a few years ago and was surprised at what a jerk Travolta played. Is James Bridges one of your guys? He seems like he could be.
Adam: Who doesn’t get along with John Travolta? He’s good at playing jerks in movies which is surprising since he’s supposed to be so nice off-screen (and was when I met him at a convention a few years ago). I love Urban Cowboy and Bright Lights, Big City so I’d say James Bridges is close to being one of my guys. Probably needed one more movie I liked to claim that title (of his other movies I’ve seen I’m mixed on Perfect and The China Syndrome).
Double Feature 6:
Patrick: #1: Bride of Chucky (1998)
Adam: #2: The Mummy (1999)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: Psycho (1998), Virus, End of Days
Adam: Theme: Late '90s Universal Horror
Adam: I have a lot of fondness for Universal Horror in general, but especially during this period because I saw nearly all of these (sorry, Virus) in theaters when I was in high school. I went with The Mummy (1999) for the second movie here because both The Mummy and Bride of Chucky are about desperate men (?) who do some crazy sh*t for their ladies.
Patrick: Thank you for programming the trailer for Psycho 1998. I love that trailer. And that movie!
Double Feature 7:Adam: #1: One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Patrick: #2: The Absent-Minded Professor (1961)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: The Parent Trap, Misty, The Trapp Family
Patrick: Theme: 1961 Family Films
Patrick: I love movies from the ‘60s. I haven’t seen all the movies from the trailer block but I’m sure watching them will only make me want to see them. I wanted to go with all 1961 family movies that got remade in the ‘90s but only made it as far as the first three.
Adam: I really love this double. I have a lot of fondness for One Hundred and One Dalmatians because I went with my Mom to see it at the Pleasure Island movie theater during its 1991 re-release when we were on vacation at Disney World. We had a great time. I remember being so impressed that the theater had hot dogs! The Absent-Minded Professor is also a favorite in the Riske household. I couldn’t pronounce the title when I was younger, so I used to call it The Asibine Fesser. It’s been a while (...been awhile) since I’ve seen it so I’d jump at the opportunity to attend this double feature.
Double Feature 8:
Patrick: #1: Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Adam: #2: The Fabelmans (2022)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: The Terminal, Bridge of Spies, The Post
Adam: Theme: 21st Century Spielbergs
Adam: One thing I love about The Fabelmans is it almost acts as a decoder ring for a lot of other Steven Spielberg movies, especially Catch Me If You Can. Both movies are awesome so this should be a fun evening. The trailer block are the other Tom Hanks-Steven Spielberg collaborations from this century.
Patrick: Killer double of Spielberg family issue movies. I need to rewatch The Post, I think. JB keeps saying it’s great and I thought it was just ok the one time I saw it. I like to love the rest of these.
Double Feature 9:Adam: #1: Superman (1978)
Patrick: #2: What’s Up Doc? (1972)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Twilight (1998), The Late Show, The Ice Harvest, Still of the Night
Patrick: Theme: Written by Robert Benton
Patrick: I’m a little bit mixed on Robert Benton as a director (having not seen everything, I should add) but what a lineup of movies he wrote! Any one of these would go well after Superman (to which he was a contributor, not the sole screenwriter), but I wanted to keep things light and it was recently Peter Bogdanovich’s birthday so What’s Up Doc? Seemed like the right choice.
Adam: I love it. I’ve never seen What’s Up Doc? so I’m excited to have the excuse to watch it with Superman (which I’m due to revisit). You’re right about Benton’s writing career…it’s very impressive. It’s also weird to realize I’ve inadvertently been on a real Robert Benton run in 2024 between first-time watches of Billy Bathgate, Nobody’s Fool, and Twilight.
Double Feature 10:
Patrick: #1: No Way Out (1987)
Adam: #2: Stakeout (1987)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: Nadine, Maid to Order, Back to the Beach, The Care Bears: Adventure in Wonderland
Adam: Theme: Playing at Old Orchard on August 14, 1987
Adam: I love going back to my newspaper archive website and seeing what played at local theaters in the past. I’ve never seen Stakeout so this is my opportunity and I’m sure you appreciate following Costner with some Stowe. I’m kind of excited for that Care Bears trailer, not gonna lie.
Patrick: Oh shit. This is the double I’m doing first. It will ultimately just make me want to watch Revenge, so we all win.
