• 2004 Crush: Sarah Polley.
• 2024 Crush: Sarah Polley.• What I Thought in 2004: I really liked it. I’m pretty sure I saw Dawn of the Dead (2004) before Dawn of the Dead (1978) so that enhanced my experience, I’m sure. I liked the fast zombies, the mall setting, and I thought the characters were interesting and/or sympathetic. It made me think “Who is this Zack Snyder? He’s talented. I can’t wait to see his next movie.”
• What I Think in 2024: I still dig it, especially when the suspense is ratcheted up for the last act. I appreciate that this version tries something different (straight-forward action & horror with much less social commentary) than the original Dawn of the Dead. That movie’s great already so coming up with a new spin on the same plot was a wise choice.
I think I’ve always liked this movie because I’ve always been able to not compare it to the 1978 original, which is one of my five favorite movies of all time.
ReplyDeleteIt does what a remake should do: take the premise and plot of the original and do something very different with it.
To me the best scene is the opening, from after Ana and her husband are awakened by their little girl neighbor to when the camera pulls way out to show a birds-eye-view of the chaos and destruction.
And the scene stealer for me is a toss up between Ty Burrell and Michael Kelly and in the end it probably goes to CJ. I would have loved to see a trilogy of movies about him surviving in the zombie apocalypse. Although I agree that Jake Webber is great as the super nice guy everyman.
My biggest takeaway from DotD 2004 is that as much as I love Sarah Polley’s writer/director movies I wish she would star in a summer blockbuster or genre movie every other year because she really could show A-list stars how it’s done.
