Watchin' Trailerz with Doug: The Best Trailerz of 2012

You guys killed it this week. Great participation, great comments, great enthusiasm for everyone's top 10 lists (looking forward to reading all of yours tomorrow!). Today, I'm highlighting some of the best TRAILERZ (I know, kinda boring [because I'm lazy]) from last year. Now, these aren't the trailerz from the year's best movies, nor am I featuring awesome trailzers for yet-to-be-released films (e.g., Man of Steel). These are just the best looking, most exciting, funniest, fun, most kick-ass previews from 2012, in no particular order. Tell me what I'm missing in the comment section.

Prometheus
Release date: June 8, 2012



Perhaps a controversial first choice, but who among you can deny that this is a thrilling trailer? I probably liked the end product more than anyone else on the website (you can listen to Patrick and JB tear Ridley Scott's film a new a-hole here), but we can all agree that the setup, musical stings and editing in this preview are top notch. TOP NOTCH, I SAY!

Flight
Release date: Nov. 2, 2012



A great trailer for a good film. I actually dug (GET IT?) the movie, and it was briefly at the bottom of my top 10 list. Ultimately, what makes the preview so great (action, music, sincerity, Denzel being awesome) wasn't featured enough in the film. Although the film's first few Nadine Velazquez-filled minutes are NOT TO BE MISSED. You can thank me later.

Ted
Release date: June 29, 2012



I'm highlighting this here because the preview contains probably the single funniest joke/moment (aside from the Flash Gordon party sequence) in the entire movie -- Mark Wahlberg quickly rattling off white trash ladynames to his pothead teddy bear (end of clip). Hilarious.

Looper
Release date: Sept. 28, 2012



Aside from some distracting Bruce Willis Face (herein referred to as "BWF") by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this is a quality ad. Wait, no -- scratch that. This preview KICKS DICK.

The Master
Release date: Sept. 21, 2012



One of the most artistic, compelling trailerz released last year, and it's doubly excellent because it doesn't telegraph everything about the film (probably because the movie can't be put in a box as easily as, say, Pitch Perfect). Can you believe I still haven't seen this yet? What the hell's wrong with me?

The Dark Knight Rises
Release date: July 20, 2012



I experienced the most severe case of "The Coming Attractions Conundrum" when I first saw this preview in the theater. Not even sure what movie I was seeing, but I instantly wished I were watching this instead. If that's not the hallmark of a great trailer, I don't know what is. So maybe it doesn't hold up as well. And maybe they shouldn't have shown the football field collapsing. And maybe [some of] our present indifference towards the final film colors our current view of this preview. But put yourself back in early 2012. Coming off the high that was The Dark Knight, this was one of the hottest, most eagerly anticipated movies of the year. And this trailer delivered. By the time we see the title card and feel the swelling bass at the end of it, I had chills. I STILL have chills.

Sleepwalk with Me

Probably the most personal preview on this list, as it was one of the most personal movie-viewing experiences I had in 2012 (thus, it made my top 10 list for the year). Now, I know what you're thinking: "Doug, you're letting your opinion of the movie cloud your opinion of the preview!" First of all, CALL ME SIR! Secondly, you're wrong, fool! This trailer is killer on its own -- great soundtrack, quirky, interesting, serious, funny ... the fact that Keira Knightley and Gillian Jacobs kiss is irrelevant! Well, not completely.
