  1. I was listening to the podcast and perked up when you, Patrick, mentioned how awesome you find Mann's Thief to be. I rented it from Netflix to watch for the first time and should be able to do so today. I'm excited! I love me some James Caan, and I agree that Mann's crime movies are the best.

Collateral is great, by the way, save for it going a little crazy at the end. But Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise are both awesome.

  2. Oh man, the news about Doug moving also honestly bums me out. Best wishes to you and your family in your move, Doug! I'm glad you'll still be part of the site in whatever capacity you can. It sounds like this isn't really goodbye, which is good. You're seriously awesome, man, and you'll always be an essential part of this great community!

    1. SPOILER ALERT! I haven't gotten there yet but that does sound sad. Unless he's moving to Halifax, in which case I'm ready and willing to become his Patrick Beta. Or should I move to Chicago and become Patrick's Doug Beta? Both of you would LOVE me. Then I'd start to get on your nerves. Then you'd begrudgingly like me again and only screen my calls about half the time. It's the Circle of Sol.

So many tough life choices associated with this podcast!

    2. SPOILER ALERT...Or you could just refrain from reading the comments until you finish listening to the podcast. They usually contain spoilers for whatever is discussed. :) I thought the same thing: Just move to Florida, Doug! I'll be your friend!

    3. I'd be your Florida friend too, Doug, but alas I'm allergic to havericks. Good luck with the move!

  3. Glad to hear Doug enjoyed Rush, though I think I liked it more. I too enjoy racing docs (loved Senna) especially the 70s era. I may also be in the camp that believes Rush may be Ron Howard's best film. And I love Apollo 13. (also a space geek) It will take repeated views for me to make that final assessment however.

What I specifically love about Rush, aside from the performances etc, is the look of the film. Howard really captured the cinematic color, look and timbre of the period. I have not looked it up and presume he shot the film digitally, but the whole picture has that high contrast, primary color popping tone; hallmarks of the Kodachrome and Fuji Velvia film stocks that were in such heavy use with documentary film-making and still photography during the time. I love how that look brings a certain reality/documentary feel to the whole film.

Also, Doug good luck with your move. Hope all goes well for you and your family. And I looked forward to your continued contribution to the site.

  4. Doug's leaving the Chicagoland Area? NOOOoooooooookay.

Yeah, that's all I took away from the whole podcast.

  5. Yes, while PHYSICALLY I'm moving away, I will still be very much a part of the site. PATRICK CAN'T GET RID OF ME. And you're all stuck with me too (sorry?). But(t) srsly, you're all very kind and I appreciate the support!

Also, I really dug (Doug?) RUSH. I'm just still on a high from SENNA.

  6. That was some sweet stuff at the end there guys - it's a difficult kind of friendship to classify exactly but I certainly feel the same way. And I was thinking the same thing when everyone did their Top 10 lists - so great we can all feel free to express our likes and dislikes around here without fear of an internet beatdown - it's something we should just be able to take for granted, but for some reason it's an internet rarity - you should be very proud of what you've created here. And hey, Patrick, give me a call anytime - I can be a man or a woman or whatever you want, baby.

I am so pumped for F This Movie Fest 3 - we're supposed to get a snowstorm that day so barring a power outage (rare), I'm definitely in for the whole thing - it's gonna be great!

    2. I also live in California, a few hours up the coast in Monterey. Would love to give you and your wife the grand tour around Cannery Row, Carmel (where Clint Eastwood was mayor), Santa Cruz (where the Lost Boys hang out at the boardwalk), etc. My wife would love to know more couples around our age too!

  8. Just read this and thought the gang would appreciate it - from the latest issue of Harper's Magazine:

Number of Academy Award winners in the past 20 years who thanked God in their acceptance speeches: 7

    Who thanked Harvey Weinstein: 30

    1. That seems about right because, unlike God's spotty track record, when it comes to delivering the hardware Harvey delivers. :-)

  9. Between this show and the video episode the 9 year old me is getting a little tired of all this Cocoon and Brewster’s Millions bashing. So tired in fact that he is sticking his tongue out at you through a crack in the door while your back is turned. *Renegade*. 9 year old me loved those movies, and he is so confident in his initial assessment that he will gladly maintain that view for the next 25 years without ever seeing them ever again.

For those that are interested, I’ll be holding my own movie fest on my MySpace page scheduled by 9 year old me, where we will watch Cocoon, Brewster's Millions, Return to Oz, Alice in Wonderland (the 2 part TV Movie) and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. It will be Tubular!

  11. So... what happens to the F This Movie video series?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh Damn! I just got to the end of the episode. Im feeling pretty bummed about this to be honest, and my heart is breaking a little for Patrick. (sympathy tear)

The brilliant chemistry between the two of you is what made me fall in love with this site to begin with. I hope Skype will be used to keep Doug in the loop often and that it will manage to capture the same je ne sais quoi.

What ill miss though are the 3 way episodes with JB. In particular the moments when JB is trying to make a fairly serious point but Patrick and Doug are distracting things by having an ongoing side joke between them (era). It gave us all an insight into how things would have been back in the school days.

Peace and love kiddies. Absence will make the heart grow fonder. Just promise that you'll never leave Me, Doug.

    1. And of course, best of luck with the move Doug. Ive recently done the same thing, moved across country away from friends and family to where my partner is originally from. I moved to Perth, where bogan miners live, you get to move to LA, Hollywood, where the magic happens.....and race riots. Say No To Crack.
Change is exciting. Im excited for you!

  13. Doug, just wanted to wish you best of luck in LA! I hope everything works out great out there.

Also, I love RUSH too. Best damn rock band of the 70s.

  14. Every time I see that the new episode of F This Movie! is an F Everything, I always worry that this will be the one that jumps the shark and degenerates into boring rambling and inside jokes that none of us understand. Once again, I was wrong, and you two wound up reinforcing the strongest aspect of the show, making us all feel like we're your buds having a great time just talking movies with no direction or endgame. F Everything reinforces the idea that we're a family more than any other show. I totally Doug it.

I'm glad Patrick reported on some of the old classics he's been watching. I got really excited in the New Years video when he decided to tackle all those old classics like "8 1/2" and "Rules of the Game", so I was happy to hear him report on Bridge on the River Kwai, even though he didn't gush about it for twenty straight minutes. Keep us posted on all those movies Patrick. I'm not the biggest fan of "Rules of the Game" or "8 1/2", and your analysis might help me see the light better than the New York Times just telling me they're masterpieces. I'm also a huge unapologetic fan of "Gone with the Wind" and I'm on pins and needles to hear how many times you fell asleep. I also need to see "Last Temptation of Christ", maybe we could tackle it together.

Great show guys. I'll see you for the first half of F This Movie Fest III.

  16. I forgot to mention this earlier. I got namedchecked in this episode for liking Amazing Spider-Man. I still think I LIKE it alright, but I've cooled significantly on it. I love Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and their chemistry, and I like the approach to Peter in the movie. In fact, I like quite a few choices that were made, and the scene where Spidey rescues the kid and tells him to wear his mask is one of my favorites from any comic book movie. But the rest of the movie is boring and full of CGI action scenes that make me check out. I was so happy that they updated Peter and Gwen to a more current kind of person (instead of Raimi's very 60s and 70s take on Peter) that I forgave too much of the rest of the movie. So I still like it, but I don't want to be the guy who defends it, because it's not great. I've now settled on "fine." It's fine. I like it. Don't love it.

    1. It especially didn't need to tell the origin story AGAIN for 45 minutes.

    2. Nice try HHH, but its a little too late for that. You are forever known as "HHH: TASM Lover Boy"

    3. Solidarity, Brother Heath! Together, we shall convince the F!-iverse that ASM1 is a masterpiece.

And Joseph, they DID need to retell the origin story. For one thing, the new Peter Parker is bitten because he was actively looking into OsCorp's business - no small or insignificant detail. Furthermore, it's thematically important to establish that Gwen was working at OsCorp before he became involved, as it further demonstrates that she's more sophisticated and socially accomplished than he is - she really is the "better half" of their pairing, which will make the upcoming you-know-what even more tragic.

And yes, they could have covered his origins in the opening credits, Incredible Hulk-style, but that movie is all about General Ross' chase, how Betty learns to tame the beast, and how Bruce comes to accept who he is. Since Spidey's powers aren't horrific, there's no need for him to exile or seek to cure himself, nor is there a need for his love interest to help him regain control of his life.

Finally, if the plan had been to build the new series around random villains randomly popping up (a la Raimi trilogy), that would have been one thing. But since the idea behind the reboot series was always to tie most characters into and around OsCorp, including the bite, it would have been absurd, from a basic storytelling perspective, to just skip over Peter's role in all that. In other words, sir, you are wrong! Good Day. ;)

    4. Yeah, the origin thing is something that I'm actually okay with. I feel like Raimi (or maybe it was the studio dictating) made a mess with the web stuff the first time around. Organic web shooters are simple, and some would say not a big deal, but it took the science away from Peter. He's a scientific prodigy and spends tons of time working on building his webs in his room. It's not the most crucial detail regarding the character, but I like that it's been fixed and Peter's back to being all about science. Plus, now he can run out of webs. That happens all the time in the comics. The Vulture is attacking and Spidey's all out of web fluid. It just adds one more layer of vulnerability.

Most of my problems occur in the last hour of the movie when it gets action heavy.

  17. On the hand it's sad we're losing Doug to West Coast time differences and the laid back L.A. lifestyle. His unique (ahem!) voice in the "F This Movie" universe and catalyst that ignites/brings the best out of Patrick will be sorely missed even though Skype will keep him in the loop with the gang. In fact, I'd be lying if I said my first thought when Doug said he was moving was how emotional and teary-eyed Patrick is going to get on the airport as the two lifelong buddies hug each other goodbye. You know, like when Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask left Usagi/Sailor Moon because he had to go study in America... (sob, sob). :-P

Seriously, though, good luck in L.A. Doug. Send us a postcard of the Chinese Gruuman Theater when you're standing there. You know, as seen on hit movies like "Rush Hour," "Iron Man 3" and "Birdemic 2: The Epidemic." :-)
