  4. I'm making my way through Danny Steinmann's filmigraphy too. I keep getting stuck on his early work tho, I watch High Rise every morning before work.....and every night before bed....and occasionally on a Saturday when I have a few hours to myself.

  5. In case anyone else was wondering, yes, Shavar Ross exists in the Friday the 13th universe, he played Dudley on "Different Strokes", and he looks just like Reggie. I base this on the "Sanford and Son" precedent, where an episode had Fred Sanford meeting Redd Foxx. So all is well where these two universes intertwine.

  8. BTW....this movie wasn't the only appearance of cocaine in a Ft13th movie. There's coke in Jason Takes Manhattan...and one of the girls doing it is killed by Jason with a shard of mirror glass.

  10. It seems you confuse "movie doesn't make sense" with not "understanding what you are watching" You make lots of jokes about how low security the camp was, comparing it to the mental hospital in ELM STREET. This is a CAMP for TROUBLED youth. Not a prison. So that kills about 1/3 of your jokes. And why all the Danny Steinman bashing? You acknowledge the shoot was drug addled and full of unreliable narrators, why do you believe what was said about Steinman? He's abrasive? That's it?

All would be forgiven if this was funny. Try making some notes before you record next time.

  11. Friday V first viewing. I wouldn't not watch it again, like if I saw it on TV. I spent a good portion of it thinking Tommy was Jason, and when the Jason reveal happened, I was like, "who's that guy?". Overall, more gratuitous nudity and less gore than I expected. Looking forward to listening to the commentary now.

I have also never seen parts 3 and 6. Feel like I need to watch those now.

  12. I've been thinking about Friday Part V since I watched it, and I'm gaining an affection for the franchise in a way that I haven't had before. I've been an Elm St guy since I saw the original on VHS in 1985; but 13th was always a lesser horror franchise for me. I didn't respect it. It was a collection of the worst horror movie cliches.

There is something about the way part 5 reinvents the first movie, gives us goofy-endearing characters, disregards quality film-making, and integrates enchiladas that kind of works. It captures something nostalgic about 80s horror: underwhelming scares, robot dances, community theater-level acting, kung-fu, a child in jeopardy, gratuitous skin, implausible character actions, a sheriff, drug use, running through forests, a false ending (or two). In other words, all the cliches that caused me to dismiss the franchise those many years ago are in full effect here. And that works in its favor to make it improbably charming.

This movie makes me wish every Friday deployed a who-is-the-killer plot device. It's dopey but fun. The movie in general is inappropriate in a number of ways, but still... somehow... charming in its anachronisms. I've joined the Bromley train for this film.
