  2. Hopefully, not being a dick by pointing this out, but I also noticed it in the seven-word review you guys are referencing, and it was bugging me: In Happy Death Day, Tree doesn't set that birthday ringtone for herself, her roommate does, without Tree's knowledge. Tree even calls her out on it during one of the movie's first scenes.

  4. Great listen! I think this one is damn masterpiece and a perfect film altogether. You can FEEL the literal coldness of the city. Like I need a regular (as opposed to crisis) blanket. Virginia Madsen plays her role perfectly. Adam you said it's "scary all the time" even during the day and it's so true. That damn bathroom haunts me. As a kid, along with the saying Candyman in the mirror thing that scared me to death, any time I would go into a public bathroom that was grimy AF, I would think Candyman. Stil do, although there seemed to be way more grimy bathrooms in the 90s.

  5. There's plenty said about how Clive Barker's story was transplanted into the locale of the Cabrini-Green housing projects and how ingenious of an application it was, and I wholeheartedly agree. This movie is one of my fave urban legend movies and it does indeed stay with you. I like how you guys touched on it being a movie you could take home with you. It is so true. I wish I had seen this in a theater when it came out. I would LOVE to see it with an audience.

While it is very possible this movie suffers from White Knight syndrome in the final minutes, I would argue that the possession of Helen is an extension of the power of Candyman. In her pursuit to appropriate his story, she ultimately became his possession in the end. I'd like to read the article Adam was referring to, because I think this movie certainly speaks larger now about gentrification. Any area with deep history seeps into whatever commercial artifice is built upon, like legends told safely by those far removed from it.

    1. I always thought the same, that Helen was essentially eaten up by the legend of Candyman. I'm not sure about the gentrification idea; although it works now, I don't know if that was a popularly understood issue then like it is now. But like any great movie I think it lives and breaths long after it's original intentions, much like the oral legends that it deals with.

    2. The White Savior thing is suspect mostly because it was a trope in the early 90s but it makes sense in the context of the movie. Helen needs people to believe in her (like Candyman) to retain power and return and if not for the Cabrini-Green residents visiting her grave, would she have been able to come back?

    1. Thank you to the Aloha State for having me and being amazing. The people there are so nice. Big shout-outs to Ted's Bakery, the Kuaola Ranch and Kailua and Lanikai beach :-)

    2. Riske speaking as a dude born and raised in Kailua and on Lanikai beach I’d like to say you did it right. Hopefully you made it out to the Mokuleia’s (aka the Mok’s). Therefore by the power vested in me (nobody vested any power in me) I declare Adam “Riskmaster” Riske an honorary Kamaaina kid.
