  1. The Psycho remake is like Nickelback, where hating on it has become a weird shorthand used to ingratiate oneself into a group, no matter how shallow the criticism is. That's not to say that Van Sant's Psycho (or Nickelback) is GOOD necessarily, but I'm not sure how many criticisms I've seen of it that I would consider critical.

I will always have a little bit of a soft spot for this movie, since it was the first R rated movie I ever saw in theaters (thanks Mom!). I'm currently doing a rewatch of the series this October, and was on the fence whether to include the remake, but after this show I guess I'll need to rewatch it.

    1. It's not going to our usual feeds. I don't know why. Trying to figure it out. Sorry about that.

  3. I've never seen this movie, but your guys' discussion was fascinating. Perhaps I'm motivated to check it out? In any case, I loved this episode.

  4. Great, I was always exasperated that people thought this remake was born out of a lack of ideas "Gee I dunno, I guess we'll just use the original_script 'cos we haven't got anything better" Far more interesting ground was covered doing it the way they did, glad to hear a reasonable assessment of it

  5. I watched the Psycho remake earlier this year for the first time (incidentally, for an as-yet-unreleased podcast with some friends about remakes). I liked it more than I expected to, but still found Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn to be a little meh.

THAT BEING SAID! I would actually be onboard for another remake of it today, and here's my dream casting:

    Norman - John Cho
    Marion - Sarayu Rao
    Lila - Mindy Kaling
    Sam - Gael Garcia Bernal
    Arbogast - Michael Shannon
    Deputy Sheriff - Noah Emmerich

And I'd love to see Nia DaCosta direct it, perhaps with Issa Lopez on script duty.

Like any story that becomes a classic, Psycho has good bones. It's how you flesh it out that makes or breaks it.

  6. "I don't even know if it's bad, I just know that it's weird."

    Agreed.

  8. Finally got to finish this this morning. Have y'all seen Soderbergh's Psychos? I didn't hear you talk about it but I may have missed it. It's fascinating, he cuts between the two different versions throughout the runtime.
