  1. Speaking of Heat, on the bluray for the 15th anniversary of the movie, there's an extra feature which a Q&A panel with all the cast and crew. That's when i realised what happened to Val. It was so sad seeing struggle to simply talk.

  10. Comment #200: Wow...cant believe im the 200th person to comment. Tis weird that i randomly, and in NO way intentionally, ended up commenting 200th. Odd really.

Anyhoo i was just dropping by before i head off to Munich for the international semi-finals of the MCTTC (Macauly Culkin Trivia Thunderdome Challenge). Turns out the competition isnt that strong this year seeing as ive seen virtually none of his movies. I managed to win alot of early rounds by 'winging it'. For example when asked about a plot summary for The Good Son i just said "ahhh yes, great flick, he really came into his own from a dramatic perspective. i believe thats the movie where he and his uncle buck team up to best some home invaders by tricking them into a basement filled with angry bees. the home invaders weren't allergic or anything, turns out you really cant survive being stung by a poopton of angry bees*. Those events lead him into witness relocation where he adopts the name Richard Rich and spends most of his time doing drugs in the NY club scene. Also, based on the video box i think he's like some kind of sociopath kid?".

(*Editors Note: I thought about adding a bit where MacCauly donned an Austin Powers costume as part of how he tricked the bandits to the bee laden basement so he could turn to the camera as they painfully died, placed his hands on his face, and said "OHHHH Bee-Hive!". But that seemed like a long walk for the bit. Buuuuut not too long to postcript here).

  22. I actually do dislike 'Nomadland'. Should've just been a documentary, not glory shots of McDormand pretending to be desperate amongst people that are living fascinating and difficult lives. And David Strathairn out of nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What's everybody's most frightening and/or romantic film from their childhood?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great question Will...and my money is on you for 200.

Most frightening film from childhood is a toughie for me because boy howdy did movies scare me as a kid. I do have two strong memories that kinda answer:

MOVIE SCENE: I stayed up late when i was around 9 or 10 and snuck watched the 70s Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. The final scene in the street with Donald Sutherland scared the living crap out of me. still does thinking about it. i did not turn off the lights that nite.

TV Scare: I know you werent asking about short form storytelling...but the second biggest scare i recall aligns with above...comes down to a final shot....in this case its the last moment with the Talky Tina doll in the Twilight Zone ep of the same name. The evil doll trope is always a good one but NO one has done it as well as this episode of the zone.

Honorable Mention and probably the best actual answer to your question: decades later with countless horror flicks under my belt i gotta tip my hat to Poltergeist. Maybe it was that i saw it very young but i think it stands the test of time as one of the best scary movies ever made. Also..PG!?

      Delete
    2. Great answers! Thanks! I love hearing peoples specific movie imprints

      Delete
    3. Far and Away 💁🏻‍♀️ For some reason as a kid I liked the idea of a couple being together in order to survive, like this couple, tryna make it in a foreign land. It seemed so practical. I thought that was the best kind of romance.

      Delete
    4. Married to the Mob. Looking back, I don't think it's supposed to be a scary movie (?), but it got under my skin. Something about Alec Baldwin in a bathtub creeped me out. I always tell myself I'll revisit it someday because I was probably imagining things back then.

      Delete
    5. Alec Baldwin is kind of inherently intimidating, like a playground bully

      Delete
    6. Also far and away, great call.

      Delete
    7. Scare: Ben Gardners boat.

Favorite frightening movie as a kid is Poltergeist. My aunt had a long hallway with a closet at the end which had a normal door and had bedrooms leading to either side. I had nightmares about the beast coming out of that door for years.

Romance is Bringing up Baby. Saw it the first time in a high school film class and loved it. Then I had a Baader-Meinhof phenomenon situation and started seeing it all the time on AMC back when AMC was what TCM has become. I was hooked. Still one of my all time faves.

    8. When I was 4, the neighbour was supposed to watch me one afternoon while my parents were out. He put his 3-year-old daughter and me in front of Child's Play 3, because why wouldn't you? Needless to say I had a bit of a problem with dolls for a little while. Also, I've always remembered the last scene vividly, which I won't spoil but involves some kind of propeller, so much so that I ended up thinking I'd just imagined it... until I rewatched the movie 15 or so years later and saw on the screen the exact same scene that had played in my head all those years. Wow! Wow.

      Delete
    9. @Munkee....AHHHHHHHH!!! BEN GARDNERS BOAT! Absolutely that f@#$ked me up as a kid!! Scariest part of Jaws for me.

Trivia: im pretty sure i read this in Gottlieb's book The Jaws Log, but that the ben gardner 'reveal' was like the last shot filmed..after primary production wrapped..they did it in someones pool in LA.

  54. Did you know Kelly Jo Minter was in Mask. Not the one about the cars that turn into helicopters. That's M.A.S.K. Different beast but great theme song.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anyways, where was I? Kelly Jo Minter was in the Eric Stoltz and Cher movie, 'Mask: The Rocky Dennis Story'. Its a small role but very memorable.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I tried to find a Kelly Jo Minter quote but was unsuccessful.
Instead please enjoy this random quote from the author named Kelly Minter

  57. “Satan will often tell us what is true, but will never tell us the truth.”

  61. “You and your brother are landlords of over 50 buildings in this city, all of which you've allowed to deteriorate into rat infested hellholes while you guys get rich charging ridiculous rents. Then, you evict anyone the minute they can't pay rent so you can tear down their homes and build some more office buildings, isn't that about right?”
KELLY JO MINTER - Ruby Williams 'People Under the Stairs'

  69. Neither Kelly Jo Minter, Suzanne Snyder or Shawnee Smith have played a character named Val.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Shawnee Smith is credited with the role of 'redhead' in two separate films.

    ReplyDelete
  71. One of those movies was Armageddon

    ReplyDelete
  72. Kelly Jo Minter was not in Armageddon

    ReplyDelete
  73. Owen Wilson was in Armageddon.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Charlton Heston was up for a role in 'House Party' but was beat out by Martin Lawrence

    ReplyDelete
  75. Due to this Charlton Heston has never worked with Kelly Jo Minter.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Fun fact! I saw the Good Son because
the Program was sold out. I then saw the Program the next night.

    ReplyDelete
  78. They did not play in Anchorage till later

    ReplyDelete
  79. It was not a good weekend movie watching wise

    ReplyDelete
  80. Would Charlton Heston or Kelly Jo Minters presence in Warlock Armageddon make it a better movie.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I bet Charlton Heston would have killed the MAc role in Good Son.

  91. Patrick, you should absolutely watch The Ruins! I'd strongly recommend the book too, it's pretty great and the experiment-like approach the author takes is fascinating ("let's pick these absolute morons, put them in this extreme situation and see where that goes", without ever judging them for their -very- poorly informed choices), but the film suffers a bit from the comparison. So maybe watch it first! (it's still very good, it just feels a bit rushed, as the book basically takes place in real time, which makes everything that much more horrifying)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I absolutely second Ed B.s comments! I looooooooooooooooooooved the book. Couldnt put it down and am so bummed Scott Smith hasnt written anything since. The adaptation is fine and a solid horror outing for sure. Do check one of them out!
