Nominated for “Best Frightened Performance” (Cary Elwes) at the MTV Movie Awards. He lost to Dakota Fanning in Hide and Seek.
• Best Scene/Moment: The Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) reveal at the end of the movie.
• Best Song: “Hello Zepp” by Charlie Clouser.• Best Merch: A “Saw 2004 Full Frame Rare Blockbuster Video DVD Rental Case Authentic Original” for $25.00. As much as I love Blockbuster, I’m surprised I don’t own any movies (other than Previously Viewed DVDs) in Blockbuster cases like this rental. I need to call out the Full Frame of it all because it’s become a pet peeve of mine lately when I go to used bookstores and buy inexpensive movies. I must always double check they’re not full frame. It was a real epidemic back in the 2000s. I can’t tell what’s worse -- Full Frame or Unrated Editions.

• Double It with This 2004 Movie: The Machinist
• Year 2004 Movies to Trailer Before Them: Exorcist: The Beginning, Open Water, Godsend• Color of Night or Saw? Saw
• Mall Movie? Yes. Early 2000s Lionsgate would always play at the mall.
• Only in 2004: Cary Elwes being the face of the Saw franchise instead of Tobin Bell & Shawnee Smith.
• Scene Stealer: Billy the Puppet.
• I Miss: Danny Glover in Saw movies. I forgot he was in the first one.
• I Don’t Miss: Leigh Whannell’s performance. He’s pretty annoying although I know that’s by design.
• 2004 Crush (tie): Dina Meyer and Monica Potter.
• 2024 Crush: Dina Meyer.• What I Thought in 2004: I was somewhere between mixed to positive about Saw when I first saw it in theaters. I didn’t really like the dingy aesthetic of it all, but the mystery was interesting plus the final moment was well-done and made me leave the theater wanting to see another installment.
• What I Think in 2024: I like it more now than I did back in 2004. The original Saw used to fall in the middle somewhere in my rankings of the franchise (behind Saw II, Saw VI, and Saw X) but now it might be my favorite of the series. It hasn’t established the rhythms of the franchise quite yet, so the first one feels unique in a way, especially returning to it for the first time after all of these years.
