Introducing the #ScaryMovieMonth Movie Club! (1,000 Post!)

We're now less than 72 hours away from #ScaryMovieMonth, and we've got something new going on this year.

Instead of doing Weekend Weigh-ins this October, we're going to try something different. We've picked four horror movies for you to watch during the month, and each weekend we'll run an open thread for discussion of a different movie. Make sense?
Week 1 (10/5) The Lords of Salem
Week 2 (10/12) The Haunting (1963)
Week 3 (10/19) The People Under the Stairs (Watch on Netflix)
Week 4 (10/26) The Woman (Watch on Netflix)

We'll be leaning on all of you to get the discussion going, but I'm excited to take part. These are hopefully movies that not everyone has seen but which lend themselves to dialogue, love them or hate them (and you may hate them). It only works if people participate, and if it shits the bed I guess we won't bring it back next year. It's just one more way to make #ScaryMovieMonth a community event and our favorite 31 days of the year.

By the way, you may have seen at the top of the page that this is our 1,000 post on F This Movie!. I thought about including a lot of fanfare and celebration but decided against it, because the truth is that if things keep going the way I want them to go on the site we'll be at 2,000 posts before you know it. So I'll just say THANK YOU to everyone who contributes to this site, whether it's the writers and podcast guests who KICK ASS every week, all of you in the comments who have such interesting and funny responses and who keep the dialogue going or everyone who reads but maybe doesn't comment. We know you're there, and we love and appreciate you as much as anyone. We promise to keep getting better if you all promise to stay with us. And we promise not to launch a Kickstarter to raise $100,000 to do the show in my basement. Clearly $50,000 will do.

I know lots of sites think their fans are the best. That's their right, but they are wrong. You guys are the best.

  1. I'm torn, because like Groucho & Woody before me I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have someone like me as a member.

But seriously folks, great idea and I'm excited to see it get rolling. It helps that all 4 movies aren't only good (they are) but that they all lend themselves to all sorts of discussions. Terrific choices!

  2. I already set October 1 as the date to watch "The Lords of Salem", so this is perfect!

  3. Since I had to bail on Junesploitation I am watching a horror film everyday in Oct. for Scary Movie Month! I didn't give myself any criteria but I have a pretty diverse list. Super excited as this is my favorite time of year.

  4. Great! Love the idea of being able to shoot the shit about a certain movie in SMM. Frees it up a bit beyond the seven word reviews, but with the one set movie per week it wont detract from the heads-down hard slog of the Scary Movie Month fun(work) ;-)

Oh, and 1000 posts Definitely deserves a fan fare.

    *taa dah*

Congratulations mate, 1000 posts is a hell of an accomplishment. If growth and expansion is in the works, or whatever is going to get you to 2000 posts faster, then I am super excited for whats to come. Its only a matter of time before the levy breaks. No other site has such a high quality product, seriously. Keep up the Great work.

  5. This list made me laugh, Patrick (in a good way). All of these have been brought up on several of your podcasts as little seen or underappreciated--so what better way to get them seen than to have everyone on here watch them. Love it!!!

  6. Concept is good.

    The movies....gotta think about.

    1. No, you don't. They're good choices :-)

    2. Two of the four are great choices. The other two... eh... boss' prerogative (he owns the candy store). :-P

    3. Say it with me now: They know what they're doing!

    4. J.M. - I disagree. They are good choices. Even if you don't like the movies, these are ones that will inspire interesting discussions. I'm kicking Larisa Oleynik out of the Hall of Kick Ass. This is bullshit. You have 30 days to pick up her stuff.

    5. John Murphy beat me to it, but yes...they know what they're doing!

    6. "Bad" or "good" does not matter so much as the dialogue they will generate.

    7. Correct. As long as they make for good conversation, they're good choices.

    8. Adam, what did Oleynik ever do to you? You little punk, I'll come pick up her stuff next Thursday (3PM OK?) and then get into a fist-a-cuff slapfest. ;-)

    9. Yeah, that time works. See you then.

  7. Oh, they're good choices for this. Very good choices. No offense intended.

    Just not necessarily for me.

Long story short: I have a limit when it comes to these kinds of films. I avoid things like Hostel and Saw. I have to find out if those three films are in my range first.

    1. I see what you're saying. Lords of Salem and The Woman are rough stuff, no doubt. But I'd argue they have more on their mind than Saw or Hostel.

    2. The Lords of Salem novelization is way more gruesome than the movie. ...Yeah, I read the novelization.

  8. Bought "Lords of Salem" on Blu-ray/DVD so me and a BD-less co-worker could watch it. I sold it on eBay as soon as we both watched it, which kind-of hints at what we thought about the film but it'll be an interesting discussion since it got such a limited theatrical release.

Thanks for the weeks-long heads-up. Your hard push for "The Woman" (the other three are well-known movie properties for established directors) is admirable as that's the least-known and watched of all the horror films that get talked around here a lot. Can't wait to find out which horror franchise gets the retrospective podcast treatment this year: "Hellraiser"? "Friday the 13th"? Romero's "Living Dead" series? We'll soon find out. :-)

  10. This sounds interesting guys - I look forward to seeing how it plays out. I've been sitting on a copy of Lords of Salem for weeks now so it will be one of the first I watch for sure. The Woman is actually the only one of the four I've seen (and I really like it and can't wait for the discussion) so I'm glad to be "forced" to watch a couple that might not have made my list.

I can't believe it's fucking Scary Movie Month Eve!!!

  11. The Woman was overrated garbage IMO. Lords of Salem was interesting. I'd have to re-watch The Haunting and People Under the Stairs as it's been far too long since my first and only viewings of each.

    1. I understand you thinking it was garbage, but "overrated"? By whom? Wait, let's save it for the Movie Club!

  12. Great & interesting choices all around. Plus, I've seen 3 out of the 4 so I can participate whether I have the chance to rewatch them or not. Yay opinions!

    1. 2/4 for me (Haunting and Woman) but I'm completely up for watching those again.

  13. Great idea to foster discussion. Have only see "Woman", but looking forward to checking out "The Haunting" in particular.
