ReplyDeleteRe: Hateful Eight framing discussion - the worst Pan and Scan I can remember from my BB days were "Multiplicity" (it's so awful that it's nauseating) and "Schindler's List" which was also the film I remember the most people complaining about being Letterboxed.
I think I have to see 12 Dates of Christmas now :P For a much darker non-Christmas MPG film, I totally recommend "She Cried No" (1996 TV Movie) with Candace Cameron Bure, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Jenna von Oy.
I can't believe "The Postman" came out the same day as "Jackie Brown". Geeeeez. I loved your discussion on it as it's usually the most interesting to me hearing your thoughts on films that aren't beloved.

DeleteMy small shame of 2017, speaking of movies you were just in the mood for...was that I liked seeing Home Again in the theater. Something about it just kind of struck my sentimental bone.
ReplyDeleteAll these cute people on my Instagram talk about cuddling and watching Hallmark movies now with hot chocolate and popcorn and sweaters. I tried watching one and couldn't get into it, but I am definitely jealous of all this eggnoggy warm sugar cookie coziness everyone seems to be experiencing bc of them.
ReplyDeleteCould someone explain to me what CAMPY means? It's one of those words I try to but I can't get a picture of it, and at the same time it's on the tip of my tongue all the time , like i want to describe everything as CAMPY.
I think what's campy is actually specific to the individual person to an extent. Like the rocky horror picture show and many of John Waters movies are considered campy, but some people would just say they are great, perfect movies. Shitty holiday movies could be campy or just a good time depending on the person.
DeleteBroadly I think campy means extreme exaggeration of drama, horror, romance, or anything, but there has to be a genuine love of what that element is. The last movie I saw that I thought was super campy was 'Obsessed", with Beyonce and Idris Elba.
Thanks Will! Its hard to understand some things when they're so subjective. But, yea, looking at those examples, I think I'm confusing camp with melodrama. While they both seem about an earnest commitment to the extreme, Im getting that camp is supposed to be more clever, like more social commentary...
DeleteMe, I like social commentary but I LOVE stuff that is just plain goofy purely for the sake of being emotional and theatrical. No cleverness required!

DeleteLove the breakdown of Costner as a man's man. I share your love of the actor and he's like the guy the girl brings over on the first date and becomes her dads best friend that night and he never worries about him. Have you seen Swing Vote? Total Dad movie, and I liked it.
ReplyDeleteAactually saw this in theaters in 1997.Always liked this movie non-ironically as a cheesy post apocalyptic action movie. I always figured General Bethlehem was a name the guy made up to make himself sound grandiose. He was probably a Joe Smith or somebody before the apocalypse. Also, given 2017 is he really that over the top anymore. Anyway just realized I have fan theories regarding The Postman so I will go now.
ReplyDeleteMy mother and my future mother-in-law are obsessed with these hallmark type christmas movies, so I have seen many of them. Generally, I find them a painful experience as they are shockingly incompetent. But the 12 Dates of Christmas I've always found to be head and shoulders above the rest and I watch it every year! It was so fun hearing you guys discuss it!

ReplyDeleteYou guys are the best for making THE POSTMAN your holiday movie. I was one of the few there, right when it came out, in the theater. I was a big fan of the book at that time, was psyched for it, and I me at 16 really liked what I saw in the theater. Now I haven't seen it in the subsequent two decades -- but you've actually got me wanting to rewatch and see it again with fresh eyes.
