New double features to watch in between Chicago Bears games.Double Feature 1:
Adam: #1: A Goofy Movie (1995)
Patrick: #2: Bad Boys (1995)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Tommy Boy, Don Juan DeMarco, Outbreak
Patrick: Theme: Top 5 of April 7, 1995
Patrick: You stumped me with this one. I thought about doing a Pauly Shore thing because that’s about all I know about A Goofy Movie, but instead decided to just do a little time travel back to the movie’s opening weekend. I still like the original Bad Boys and even though I don’t think it will pair especially well, I’m down to revisit it. If they could add Tea Leoni to Bad Boys II I wouldn’t need any other Bad Boys movies.
Adam: You still picked an amazing double feature, stumped or not stumped. I’d recommend A Goofy Movie for your Disney Bro column. I think you’d like it. I just recently revisited Bad Boys and my lack of affection for Bad Boys: Ride or Die made me appreciate the original even more than I already did. The action being kind of classical instead of overwrought/video-game style was refreshing to watch, plus they’re still “Bad Boys” and not the Toretto family at that point, unlike the new movie. This would be a fun night, especially with those trailers. 1995 was a pretty great time at the movies.
Double Feature 2:
Patrick: #1: Old (2021)
Adam: #2: Hereditary (2018)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One
Adam: Theme: The Wolff Man
Adam: I was thinking the other day about how Nat Wolff was in movies in the early 2010s and then all of a sudden his brother Alex Wolff came along and Hollywood decided he was the guy and maybe not Nat. Am I on to something? I never hear about Nat Wolff anymore. Anyways, Alex Wolff’s career is still young, but he’s been in a handful of movies I have at least some affection for or flat out enjoy. This also gives me an excuse to revisit Old and Hereditary, both of which are interesting movies I haven’t seen since their opening night in theaters.
Patrick: This double would pretty much rule. I don’t think I ever quite put it together that the Wolff brothers were in so many good movies. I just took them for granted. I’ve only seen Hereditary once but was moved enough by it to name it my favorite movie of 2018. In retrospect, that’s a little crazy. My favorite movie should probably be something I want to return to all the time. I like Old even though it’s a mess. I’m on a big M. Night kick lately, can you tell?
Double Feature 3:Adam: #1: Over the Top (1987)
Patrick: #2: The Delta Force (1986)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Enter the Ninja, Hanna’s War, The Apple
Patrick: Theme: Directed by Menahem Golan
Patrick: Though he had been a director in Israel, Menhaem Golan only directed a couple of movies once he and Yoram Golbus launched my beloved Cannon Films so I thought it would be fun to do a night dedicated to his work behind the camera. Plus, we get to watch Cannon movies all night! I like Over the Top way more than I should and even though The Delta Force has a lot of problems, we will be singing the main theme all night long.
Adam: I’m all in on this one, especially since I haven’t seen either movie. Is it just me or do Cannon movies play twice as good when you watch them as a double feature?
Double Feature 4:
Patrick: #1: Navy SEALS (1990)
Adam: #2: The Last of the Finest (1990)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: The First Power, Miami Blues, RoboCop 2
Adam: Theme: Orion Pictures 1990
Adam: I’m sort of trying to recapture the magic of our MGM 1990 double feature (Blue Steel/Desperate Hours) from last year. I miss circa late-80s/early '90s Orion Pictures. It’s still crazy to me that they went bankrupt right after scoring back-to-back Best Picture wins (and box office hits) with Dances with Wolves and The Silence of the Lambs. I saw Navy SEALS once but don’t remember it and I’ve been meaning to press play on The Last of the Finest for a couple years any time I see it’s on Tubi. The trailer package for this double feature is exciting too.
Patrick: WOW this double. Just the trailers make this the one I want to program first. Even as a Chuck Sheen fan I can admit that Navy SEALS is just above average; same goes for Last of the Finest, though the cast for that one is so good that it feels like an underrated gem when it’s only pretty good. The two movies together, though – and with those trailers? This double will be hard to beat.
Double Feature 5:Adam: #1: Point Break (1991)
Patrick: #2: Free Willy (1993)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: The Goonies, Twilight, Kindergarten Cop
Patrick: Theme: Filmed at Cannon Beach
Patrick: When I saw that the end of Point Break was filmed at Cannon Beach, I remembered our family trip there back in 2018 and that it was one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been. It helped that Erika was there. Then I thought to look at other movies filmed there (I already knew about The Goonies) and that led me to Willy. Sometimes you want a night programmed just for one of your best buds.
Adam: This is…I’m struggling for words other than “thank you!” This is a dream double feature for me because both Point Break and Free Willy are among my favorite movies of the 1990s. Plus, you backed into a sneaky Lori Petty double feature and that’s always a good thing. I feel like she would’ve been a Goonie if they existed in real life.
Double Feature 6:
Patrick: #1: Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
Adam: #2: The English Patient (1996)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: JFK, Home Alone, Only You, “The Chinese Restaurant” and “The English Patient” episodes of Seinfeld
Adam: Theme: Movies Referenced on Seinfeld
Adam: I didn’t want to go too obvious for Plan 9 from Outer Space, so I decided to program the next thing I remembered -- its memorable Seinfeld episode where Jerry, George and Elaine are going to see a late night screening but keep getting delayed waiting on a table for dinner at a Chinese restaurant. I would love to go to this double feature just out of curiosity how The English Patient would play after Plan 9, especially with a crowd who has just seen the Seinfeld episodes they inspired as context.
Patrick:.Love this theme. Weird how I would much, MUCH rather watch the so-called “worst movie of all time” (a movie I like) than the Best Picture Oscar winner (a movie I don’t like). There’s no accounting for taste.
Double Feature 7:Adam: #1: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Patrick: #2: Get Over It (2000)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: O, She’s the Man, Romeo + Juliet
Patrick: Theme: Teen Movies Based on Shakespeare
Patrick: I mean, this is just a good night at the movies. I’m a sucker for teen romcoms and these are two of the best of their era (era). Get Over It is so underseen and underappreciated. Great Dunst, great songs, and one of my favorite Martin Short performances. This will pack them in I think.
Adam: Hells yeah. I really like both movies and they would pair great together. Did I ever tell you I had a Get Over It poster (that I got from my days working at Blockbuster Video) hanging up in my room back in 2000? I remember being torn between Dunst (good, ray of sunshine) and it being the video poster and not the theatrical poster (bad, upsetting). My brain is weird.
Double Feature 8:
Patrick: #1: Silverado (1985)
Adam: #2: Grand Canyon (1991)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: The Big Chill, I Love You to Death, French Kiss, Darling Companion
Adam: Theme: Kasdan & Kline
Adam: My gut impulse was to go obvious and program Costner movies, but I couldn’t pass up a night highlighting a prolific creative partnership between an actor and a director. Figuring out which movie to pair with Silverado was a little tough but I went with Grand Canyon because I remembered both movies also star Danny Glover.
Patrick: Looking at this lineup, I feel like I might not be a Lawrence Kasdan guy. That’s not to say he hasn’t made movies I really like – Body Heat, Wyatt Earp, muthafucking Mumford – but a lot of his filmography reads on paper like movies for my white parents. I do really like Kevin Kline, though, and have faith that he can get me through the back half of the double.
Double Feature 9:Adam: #1: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Patrick: #2: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Patrick: Trailers/Shorts: Captain America: Brave New World, Shrek, The Matrix Reloaded
Patrick: Theme: Recast After Death
Patrick: Is this too dark for a night at the Cinemarink? I don’t mean to be insensitive or disrespectful to the dead; I just find it interesting when a movie (or a franchise) has to pivot because an actor passes away unexpectedly. Do you have a preferred Dumbledore? I actually kind of like Richard Harris even though Michael Gambon played him for longer.
Adam: Not too dark. I prefer Richard Harris as well. I like my wizards old and past their prime like Michael Jordan. Gambon had a spring in his step that felt wrong because I had read the books (which I didn’t start reading until the movies came out) and seen the first two Potter movies with Richard Harris in mind already. Oddly enough, I read Azkaban before the movie was released and had Sam Neill in mind for Professor Lupin. My casting was better. No disrespect to David Thewlis.
Double Feature 10:
Patrick: #1: Natural Born Killers (1994)
Adam: #2: Pulp Fiction (1994)
Adam: Trailers/Shorts: Speed, Interview with the Vampire, Dumb & Dumber
Adam: Theme: MTV Movie Award Best On-Screen Duo Nominees
Adam: It feels retro and right to pair these two movies together since they were often lumped in with each other in film conversation during the Fall of 1994. Quentin Tarantino would probably be mad at me for doing this. Oh well. I love this trailer block, too. It’ll be a fun night of 1994 nostalgia.
Patrick: I saw most of these movies enough in the ‘90s that I can probably recite this double by heart. I’m not proud of this.
French Kiss has never been on streaming. Haven't seen it in ages.
