TIFF 2024 Coverage Day 1 & 2: OH, CANADA, THE SUBSTANCE, SATURDAY NIGHT & More

by Joel Edmiston
This is my first year covering the Toronto Film Festival with a press pass, but I am no stranger to this land. I worked for the festival as a production assistant for nine years. With that job came the perks of being able to watch as many movies as I could. My record is 25 movies in one festival. I plan to break that record.

2K Replay: DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY

 by Adam Riske

Nominated for “Best Comedic Performance” (Ben Stiller) at the MTV Movie Awards. He lost to Dustin Hoffman in Meet the Fockers. How did Dustin Hoffman win an MTV Movie Award?

2K Replay: KEEPING THE FAITH

Nominated for Best Male Voice (Massimiliano Manfredi for the dubbing of Edward Norton) at Il Festival Nazionale del Doppiaggio Voci nell’Ombra. That’s not a joke.

Unsung!: Mystery Men

I just cannot help imagining what the reaction to this film would have been if it had just been allowed to sit on a studio shelf for seven years.

Could’a… should’a… would’a…

Tower Heist Does Not Seem Like the Worst

If you're anything like me, you're pretty sick of having Brett Ratner's new movie, Tower Heist, rammed down your throat lately. Universal is pushing the hell out this thing, running ads on every show on every station (and it's really fucking up my Whitney watching). Posters have been plastered all over my local theater's lobby for months. Ben Stiller showed up on Saturday Night Live to promote it. Even Eddie Murphy crawled out from under Bubble Hill to do Letterman, and he hardly ever does TV to sell a movie. Probably because it's usually Meet Dave.

What I'm saying is that there has been a crazy amount of press and advertising for a movie starring the guy from Envy and the guy from The Adventures of Pluto Nash and directed by the guy who made Rush Hour 3. Everything about this movie suggests it's going to be bad, right?

I'm not so sure. And I'm totally going to see it.

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (July 29)

I was going to feature the brand new teaser for Battleship (release date: May 18, 2012), but every link to it on YouTube is DEAD ("You sank my will to live!"). Guess Yahoo! movies has the market cornered on shitty board game-based "movies." Can't wait to see how they spin McG's Boggle reimagining.
