Doug Asks Patrick Questions About Movies

Patrick knows a lot about movies. Doug has seen The Incredible Burt Wonderstone dozens of times. In an effort to expand Doug's cinematic horizons, he'll be asking Patrick questions about movies in a column we're calling "Doug Asks Patrick Questions About Movies."

What is the Value of a Movie?

There's an important question being posed by the guy responsible for the Puppet Master movies.

Heath Holland On...Ringo!

This Ringo never drummed for The Beatles, but he was one of the fastest guns in all of spaghetti westerns. As the theme song tells us, “Ringo had an angel face, but whenever Ringo loved, Ringo fought.”

F This Movie! - GoldenEye

Patrick and Mike continue their Bond series with a look at Pierce Brosnan's first time out as 007. Did you ever know how they watched you from the shadows as a child?

Riske Business: The Crow 20 Years Later

For this week's Riske Business, I invited Mike & Adam Thas (Beta) to discuss Alex Proyas’ 1994 revenge talkie The Crow and figure out if we’re still genuine hot doggers or if the movie is all “Caw! Caw! Bang! Fuck, I’m dead!” The answers might surprise you.

Heavy Action: Enemies Closer

Guy Patterson vs. Jean-Claude Van Damme? You had me at "Guy Patterson."

Weekend Weigh-in: Free For All

In lieu of a specific topic this week, we're bringing back the Free For All WWi for all of you to ask, discuss or vent about anything you want. Probably movie-related, of course.

Riske Business: Movie Crazy

This week’s column is dedicated to the discussion of that. That thing you did that was completely absurd or crazy because you loved movies.

Heath Holland On...Fanboys

I’m sticking up for a film that The Force couldn’t quite save a few years ago.

Drunk on Foolish Pleasures: The Towering Inferno

What does a producer do after his 1972 film about a sinking cruise ship is the highest-grossing film of the year? Why, he makes an even bigger film the following year, and this time sets everyone on fire!

Review: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

by Adam Riske
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is very entertaining and just a fraction more interesting and compact than it should be. It’s not particularly memorable, but that’s ok. It’s a January release. If it's not horrible, it's an overachiever.

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Jan. 17)

I'm not the biggest fan of the Muppets, but I'd be lying if I said the two recent Twitter-themed trailers for their upcoming Muppets Most Wanted weren't really funny. Well done, Henson's ghost! #Muppets4Life #YOLO

Netflix This Movie! Vol. 60

I just found out this week that my mom reads this column and uses it to get suggestions of what to watch. I hope we're all recommending stuff that's appropriate for MY MOM this week.

Drunk on Foolish Pleasures: The Poseidon Adventure

Over the next few weeks, I am going to talk about disaster movies and, tangentially, my love for disaster movies. So take my broken, bloody hand and  come along on this adventure as we metaphorically slog through fires, earthquakes, alien invasions, maritime mishaps, really shitty weather... and shame.

A Deeper Look: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Three brave warriors -- Heath, Mike and Patrick -- journey through the Desolation of Smaug to the Lonely Mountain. Was it worth the trip or should they have stayed back home in Hobbiton? Beware, o reader, for spoilers abound. Proceed at your own peril!

Heavy Action: Raze

Here's a movie entirely about people being mean to my girlfriend Zoë Bell. And that's not cool.

Review: Her (Adam Riske's Take)

by Adam Riske
Her is a very good movie and absolutely worth seeing. It is also a movie that made me feel worn out and unhappy. While possibly being one of the best movies of the year, I wouldn’t say it was one of my favorites.

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Jan. 10)

This week, a long-lost trailer for Louis C.K.'s 1998 film Tomorrow Night, featuring a young Steve Carell and J.B. Smoove (among other comics), was posted on YouTube. Look, I'd be lying if I said the film didn't look like film school 101 baloney, but it's Louis C.K., so whatever. Believe it or not, this movie actually screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Next month, you'll have the opportunity to purchase it from Louie's website for only $5. If that's your thing. Again, looks crappy, but it's Louis C.K., so whatever.

Drunk on Foolish Pleasures: Deliciously Bad

Try, gentle readers, on this coldest of days, to warm your hands and hearts by the fiery glow of my snark. Here is my personal collection of "movie badness" from 2013 -- some of these-- plot points, performances, casting choices, what have you -- were so bad, they were thrilling.
