Cinema Bestius: Casablanca
“It’s still the same old story,
a fight for love and glory,
a case of do or die...
The world will always welcome lovers
as time goes by...”

Heath Holland On...Dark Passage
by Heath Holland
As I slowly but surely make my way through Humphrey Bogart’s body of work, some movies stand out for different reasons. Bogie is associated with a ton of classic films, and even people who haven’t seen his most famous movies still likely recognize titles like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Any film fan would be hard-pressed to hear those names without instantly having Bogart’s careworn face spring to mind.

Heath Holland On...A Face in the Crowd

Sometimes movies have even more to say in the years after they were made than they did when they were new.

Heath Holland On...Influencing Indiana: Gunga Din
by Heath Holland
George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have always been very clear that the character of Indiana Jones was rooted in the adventure films and serials of their childhood and that they were paying tribute to their matinee heroes by creating a new one of their own. From time to time, I’ll take a look at those silver-screen adventures from the 1930s through the 1950s, both classic and forgotten, as we delve into the stories that influenced Indy. This week, Cary Grant stars in George Stevens’ 1939 classic, Gunga Din.

by JB
Cinemark Theaters and AMC Theaters are once again trotting out a classic film series this summer. Last week, I attended a screening of Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece The Godfather. Have you seen it? It’s very good.

Unsung!: Dracula's Daughter
by JB
As a hidden gem of the now-classic 1930s Universal Monsters cycle, this film really is unsung -- not many people realize how great (some of) it is. But Dracula’s Daughter is also completely sung for a different reason that is really nothing to sing about. So, the film is, in one sense, “some-sung”… or semi-sung. But on the other hand, it is over-sung, and still singing that same old song. Okay, now that I have cleared THAT up...
