F These Comedy Sequels

The Hangover II: Still Hangin' Over is in theaters this week to prove that comedy sequels are almost never a good idea. At BEST it can be kind of funny and feel like the first movie, but can it really surpass the original? And I'm not even saying the original is great. I'm saying can the sequel even reach the same dizzying heights of "It's just ok?" Can any comedy sequel? I'll die if I don't find out.

F This Movie! - The Princess Bride

Patrick and Doug apply the Goonies Derivation to Rob Reiner's 1987 classic The Princess Bride and come up with very different results. Spoiler: one of them is right.

Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Please understand that I really wanted to like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the insanely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Unfortunately, director Rob Marshall makes that prospect very, very difficult.

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Week of May 16)

Confession time: I haven't watched a lot of movies lately. I know, right? RIDICULOUS, especially for a film Web site. I SHOULD BE FIRED!* Dude (dude?), I've just been busy. LIFE. It gets in the way. This guy (you in the back) knows what I'm talking about. For example, I bought a grill last weekend. HOWEVER, after I bought the grill, drove the grill home and hauled the grill up three flights of stairs, I realized that the box the grill came in was open and a grill part was missing. So, I exchanged the old grill for a new grill. Assembled the grill. Cooked on the grill. What I'm trying to say that is my existence has become VERY grill-based. On another note, did you ever stare at a word for so long that it doesn't even look like a word anymore? GRILL. GRILL. GRILL. GRILL. GRILL. Phew! Even though I haven't watched a lot of MOVIES lately, I have been keeping up with movie TRAILERS. Exciting, right? Yeah -- you're excited. I can tell.

*Patrick, please don't fire me!

Take Two: Godzilla (1998)

by Patrick Bromley
Roland Emmerich makes two kinds of stupid movies: fun stupid and bad stupid. Independence Day? Fun stupid. 10,000 B.C.? Bad stupid. Stargate? Fun stupid. The Patriot? Bad stupid. 2012? Fun stupid and bad stupid.

His 1998 remake of Godzilla should have been two tons of fun stupid. Instead, it's stupid stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Week of May 2)

Happy Cinco de Mayo (+1), everyone! Or, as we here at F This Movie! like to call it, "Cinco de Mayo de Rapido," which roughly translates to, "You should all go out and see Fast Five, which, while flawed, is still a fun, summer movie!" If you're too cool to SEE movies, then use your ears and LISTEN to our podcast on Fast Five. Tequila!

F This Movie! - Fast Five

Patrick and Doug don't exactly see eye to eye on Fast Five, the fifth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. That's because one of them is a cop.

Like You Were There: Ebertfest 2011 (Day Four) (JB's Take)

JB is taking over Like You Were There this week, as he reports daily from Champaign, Illinois, while attending Roger Ebert's annual film festival, Ebertfest.

It had to happen. It happens almost every year at Ebertfest -- a film so good, so well intentioned, so meaningful that it puts all of one’s petty gripes and snarkiness to shame. A film that conquers cynicism
with talent, heart and intellect. That film is A Small Act, a moving documentary by Jennifer Arnold. At its conclusion there was not a dry eye in the house.
