Johnny California: Thoughts on ROOM 237

 by JB

We all know what an ill-conceived shit-fest writer/director Rodney Ascher’s “documentary” Room 237 is. Look at it, sitting there, hardly watched since it escaped Ascher’s colon eleven years ago.

The final curtain has fallen on Noir City Chicago 2019 at the Music Box Theatre, and I’m already pining for next year’s festival lineup. I’ve already shared my thoughts on the first three days of the fest -- now let’s dive into the rest of the week’s offerings.

Dispatches from Noir City (Days 1-3)

by Rosalie Lewis
What do you do when you’ve spent the last three days at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre watching 10 film noir movies amidst hundreds of other lovers of all things hardboiled and historic? Naturally, you come back for four more days of mesmerizing, crime-filled cinema! It’s only fitting that I’m currently holed up in the Music Box Lounge as I write this, tickets in hand for the next double feature. Let me tell you about what I’ve watched so far, so that you can follow along at home.

Ahn Demand: Barry Lyndon / Serpico

by Mark Ahn and Adam Riske
For this installment, Adam Riske and I decided to delve into some excellent movies from the '70s. Adam watched Barry Lyndon (1975) off of my unwatched list, and I saw Serpico (1973) for him. We felt like more people need to talk about how good these movies are.

Drunk on Foolish Pleasures: The Killing

For the next few weeks, Dear Reader, I intend to take you on a grim and rain-glazed trip to the Big City after dark. We will become embroiled in crime, we will fall in love with the wrong dame, we will find ourselves in over our heads, and we will ultimately be destroyed by corruption, avarice, and our own blackest motivations.

It’ll be fun! Won’t you come along?

Riske Business: Room 237 and The Shining

I am a big admirer of The Shining. While I am watching it, I am often convinced it is the greatest horror movie ever made. This past weekend, I re-watched The Shining to coincide with the release of a new documentary claiming to be 'An Inquiry Into The Shining in 9 Parts,' called Room 237. I had seen Room 237 already at the Chicago International Film Festival, and something just bothered me about it. I couldn’t figure out what. I knew I would give Room 237 another chance when it was officially released. In my re-watching of both movies, I liked The Shining more than I ever have and I’m ready to call Room 237 one of the worst movies I’ve seen so far this year. It’s a completely dishonest movie.

F These Hancocks

Webster's Dictionary defines a "Hancock" as a movie in which there are a lot of good ideas or stuff that works, but which either drastically shifts gears and becomes a different movie or fails to deliver on its potential. More often than not, Hancocks amount to ambitious failures, but that doesn't meant that all Hancocks are bad movies (I tend to like them). Let's f some Hancocks because it's made up and we want it to catch on.
