Back to 1976: THE OILY MANIAC (aka YOU GUI ZI)

by Heath Holland
Further proving that the mid-seventies were a magical time where creativity, social commentary, and pure entertainment all met at the funkiest of crossroads, this Hong Kong monster movie from The Shaw Brothers features a vigilante made of oil and rage!

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME: Perfect Summer Love

by Cass Cannon
Days that seem to last weeks, living in a bathing suit that’s never quite dry; alternating between salt water, chlorine, and sweat, and sleeping in the sun like old cats — the romance of summer is as timeless as it is universal.

The Entertaining EYES OF LAURA MARS

by Robyn Buckley
My mom bought Eyes of Laura Mars, along with Wait Until Dark, as a gift for me when I was in high school. I had never heard of either, but my mom liked both and thought that I would as well, as I tended to lean towards horror and thrillers. I went into Eyes of Laura Mars completely blind. I had never seen a trailer, had never read anything; I hadn't even known it existed! I enjoyed Eyes of Laura Mars and watched a handful of times in high school, but then went many years without seeing the movie.

Back to 1976: THE BAD NEWS BEARS

by Heath Holland
The Bad News Bears seems to represent different things to different people. Some see it as an expose on the competitive world of California Little League. Most people my age would call it the greatest kids baseball movie of our generation (the successor would be The Sandlot). All of these are accurate, but I also see something else: this is one of the first movies to realistically depict a young Generation X.

10 Movies That Made Me a Horror Fan in 2017

by Lexy Van Dyke
This #ScaryMovieMonth and throughout the last year, I immersed myself into a good amount of horror movies. I had always enjoyed some horror films, but it was generally not a genre that called to me. I had been a scaredy cat most of my life and had a tendency to hide behind pillows at the first sign of something creepy to actually enjoy the effects of any of my horror viewing. So when October rolled around, I went in full force to really determine if I was too much of a wuss for the genre or if I needed to give another chance.

Robyn's Five Favorite Foreign Films of 2017

by Robyn Buckley
I waffled over what I would write for an end of year list. While I saw a good number of the movies that are ending up on top ten lists for the year, I decided to go with a different direction. I know that the below are getting attention outside of their countries of origin, but decided that I would highlight them as well. Here, in no particular order, are my favorite foreign films of 2017.
